I'm 27 years old and from Germany. I’ve been a One Piece fan ever since childhood but only got serious about other anime around December 2011. Favorite genres would be shounen, drama, mystery and fantasy, although I seem to “watch everything across the board from shoujo to ecchi to gore to long-running battle series” – or so people say. I’m open for any reasonable discussion and recommendation. Please refrain from friend requests if we haven’t talked yet on the forums or via comments.
Favorites displayed are a mix of current season and all stars. I'm yet to construct an all-time favorite ranking however score distribution should give you a hint. I also often switch around my favorites display just because it gets boring to look at the same stuff again and again.
Ratings & Milestones
Ratings:
I try to make the most use of the point scale on MAL without being too critical or overly hipster with an average below 5. I consider a 6 your average show. Next to the always subjective enjoyment, I highly value writing, character design, a certain degree of depth and originality. The amount of content is a factor as well which makes judging specials and OVA's hard but as all other criteria the score usually drops with the amount of content/contribution to the main series. Of course I have my preferences to certain genres but every show gets its chance and is judged as objective as possible.
10 - Masterpiece - The reason we watch anime.
Aria the Origination, Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen
9 - Amazing - Nearly flawless anime with a lot of content and substance.
Juuni Kokuki, Fate/Zero
8 - Great - A highly enjoyable watch with lots of good points. Mild flaws in a few areas that don't impact enjoyment all that much. These shows stayed in their comfort zone and ultimately lack in depth or message.
Shingeki no Kyojin, Casshern Sins, One Outs
7 - Good - Above the average and good entertainment. These shows somehow managed to set themselfes apart from the vast majority but have either some more flaws or just fall flat regarding depth and character development.
Claymore, Shiki, Tetsuwan Birdy
6 - Average - Just your average show that comes around every season in different forms. Be it the cute girls doing cute things or cute mechs doing cute action.
Tari Tari, Kyoukaisenjou no Horizon, Jormungand
5 - Subpar - This is the point where obvious flaws or generic formula dumps the enjoyment/entertainment factor.
Deadman Wonderland, Myself ; Yourself
4 - Meh - The flaws multiplied, plotholes grew larger and I couldn't watch without thinking more about what they could've done better than the actual anime. 2-3min shorts mostly settle around here due to minimal content.
Sekirei, Sword Art Online
3 - Bad - Flaws can't be counted anymore, plotholes got galaxy size and I hate one or more main characters.
Guilty Crown, Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls
2 - Horrible - Content is at a minimum, just about everything about this show feels dull and stupid. You could name it Hentai or School Days level.
School Days, Princess Lover! OVA
1 - Appalling - Kill it with fire.
Code Geass: Nunnally in Wonderland, Mars of Destruction

Just finished Overlord in one night. Dropped this back in July 2015, picked it up again because friends rated it highly, in good time for season 2. It was extremely enjoyable. Fanservice aside I laughed many a time. How did you find it. 7 out of 10 was repsectable.
I have been hearing about this anime for a long time but never got into watching it, I will add it to my PTW, thanks!
> but most sadly revolve around school and sloppy romance comedy
I can definitely see that point of view, but I'm personally quite of a fan of the school genre (which in the end usually goes together with the comedy one), I'm more hit or miss with romances tho.
> The most recent offender for this is probably Sakamoto desu ga?. This felt new and funny at first but they had nothing more than the initial premise which got boring halfway through, repeating the same gag over and over...
For me a gag rarely gets tiring as long as I like it, in Sakamoto's case I just loved to see whatever random thing he was going to do next to look cool as fuck, but I get what you mean.
> Maybe you got something in mind could gimme hope for comedy again.
Woah, this is hard to say since unless I saw it wrong, One Punch Man is your only high rated comedy and you are not a fan of school settings.
Anyways, I personally love Saiki Kusuo no psi-nan, I wrote this Watch This! on reddit, but to TL;DR it, it's about a guy with lots of supernatural powers who just wants to live calmly, but is always surrounded but weirdos, using his powers in different ways and situations to deal with them, I personally really like the entire cast and the variety the powers add to the mix make it consistently funny, it's also quite fast paced so there is always something going on, which adds quite a lot to the comedy IMO.
It comes in two formats (120 4 mins long episodes or 24 TV durations episodes), I personally found it really funny from pretty much the start, it also has a 2nd Season announced by next year (so hyped!)
> Interesting you recommend me something that put you to sleep haha.
XDDD, in the end I'm recommending what I think the other person will like, not what I personally did, but yeah, funny nonetheless.
And now 5 am, I need to go to bed right now q_q
Nana is another one that I will have to watch sooner or later due to being a MAL top 100, I'm personally not too excited since I'm not a fan of the shoujo demographic in general, but let's see how it goes when the time comes. I also saw that it has Beck as clear top recommendation, but seeing that you dropped that one as well I feel more motivated to watch it XDD, unfinished work for what I know tho, so sad.
I think that the "going from one place to another" way of Mushishi gets my interest way more than the relatively small world of Natsume with the usual places he lives and goes. I'm currently watching Kino no Tabi as well (4 episodes in so far) and I really like how there is always a new adventure awaiting for her to wherever she visits.
I agree with the point of the stories not really being about the main characters (even less for Ginko), but when the story focuses on them for an episode, my reaction is way different. I always feel really curious to know more about Ginko and what happened to him to become the Mushishi he's now, but with Natsume I kinda just got tired at this point, especially since it keeps coming back to the "he really felt alone as a kid due to seeing spirits".
This might be just how I feel, but I also think that Natsume episodes sometimes become even repetitive to me, like, I already watched that before, mushis provide better variety and their mysterious feeling compared to the talking youkais make the experience way more interesting.
In the end this is just my point of view, Natsume and Mushishi have clear similarities and it's not a surprise that they are recommended one to the other, but the differences are what makes me enjoy Mushishi so much more than Natsume.
> You struck me as a more serious person from these ratings, a critical mind to say.
That's definitely not how I feel about myself xDD, honestly it just comes down to the "rating by enjoyment" format to me, if I find an anime boring, or some characters just get on my nerves and they bring down the series for me, low score, if that random comedy no one gives a damn about makes me laugh from start to end and I like everyone, it definitely won't get lower than a 9/10.
I kinda just I also feel that I stick to stuff for waaay longer than needed (and the MAL 100 challenge I mentioned definitely confirms it).
Like, any person would ask me why I even bothered to watch all Gintama or Natsume if I find them meh most of the time, or why the fuck I even watched all the Ghibli movies when after watching a third of them I felt like I only like 2 max, I'm such a masochist.
> I find most comedies in anime very hit or miss its hard for me to find a lot I actually enjoy.
Comedy is the genre I watch the most tbh, like, I will still dislike a good number of them, but I'm always in to try out more of the genre. I definitely don't bother to watch a random MAL 7.30 sports, military, fantasy... etc anime no one even talks about because it's from genres that don't have my interest, but I will be totally in for a comedy one if it looks interesting to me.
> Ghost in the Shell
The way you define it looks pretty fucking awesome, but when I watched the movie all I felt was a need to sleep instead, the execution was just so absurdly boring. Like, I wasn't that big in the relatively similar Psycho-Pass neither, but I still found it entertaining to watch (except Spooky Boogie, fuck that part).
btw, since you like Ghost in the Shell I really think that you should check out the movie Jin-Rou from your PTW, same studio, similar feeling and art style, and... same reaction from my part.
Yo Zy! I'm well thanks, how are you?
Vinland Saga will take you a while. There have been so much character development it feels like a different series to me now. This current season im a fan of Compulsive Gambler and Ballroom e Yousoko. Noting else stood out. Made in Abyss is an alright series in an off season. Shingeki no Bahamut 2 is carrrying on, enjoying this one.
What are your highlights this season? How are you finding Vinland Saga?
Kuzu no Honkai focuses too much on the sensei, would rather see the main female develop into a wicked woman.
Most entertaining show is Youjo Senki for me. The beginning of the series didn't capture me but feels long forgotten. What an odd set up but glad I sat through it. Having said that I just Lol'd irl to Weak Pedal 3, this show is becoming more comical in a good way. The subtle humour is funny.
Now I can leave my 4 year old laptop to rest. This machines an absolute beast. Went a little bit above my intended budget but it was all the more worth it.
Noticed you're watching Pokemon XY, do you even play the games at all?
Oh btw do you have discord? I just made a small sever a little while ago, would you like to join? That way, if boa too joins I can just chat with you guys there. Disappointed with my mal downtime, time to have fun with general discussions again. Link
I have already watched half of it, but I never marked it. I've only watched the second half in 3 days. xD
I loved it. One of the best, smartest anime I've ever watched.
I know, but I have no idea where to start when I finish the ones I'm watching right now...I will definitely check your list, maybe ask for your opinion, too xD
I can understand that, I could say that I more enjoy anime, but manga is a much faster alternative when you don't have time for everything. In the case of Berserk, it's simply a shame not to read it.
Don't even get me started on the new anime...
