Damn. What was with this overtly sexual episode, it left so much to be inferred; did he have sex with a virgin for the "miracle of resurrection?" Or was it by laying with a virgin. But then the priestess was naked, and that sword maiden's demeanour was laced with sexual innuendo...
So confused.
And these bipolar episodes aren't helping either. How on earth do they manage to bring a heavy slice of life element to the anime... going out and enjoying ice cream, I'm at a loss for words.

Anyways, can't wait for next week

P.S.
Honestly. That witch needs to die. I've said it so many times, that voice makes her sound like she's having a fookin attack every other word.

The virgin thing aside, that physical contact is necessary to perform healing is nothing new either.

I enjoyed the relaxed moments between Goblin Slayer and Priestess. Especially how she reprimands him to not always give one note answers and the brainfreeze.

The part with the Beholder was nice. I remember fighting it in Baldur's Gate and in various variations in SAO Re: Hollow Fragment.

Dust explosion ftw!

WILL YOU STOP WHINING!?
No I don't understand! You snap at people, you're scary, you tried to eat me, but you're also kind and you're filled with life!
You gave me a name when I was a number, you gave me that compass, you taught me what it means to be alive!
That's why I care about you Velvet! I'll protect you for my own sake. I don't care if you're malevolent, or if it was pointless! If it's a mistake to love you, then I"ll fight the whole world! A world without you, Velvet, is the one thing I couldn't bear!
Eat my arm, just leave me the other one! I need it to clobber the jerk who made my Velvet cry!

It is Deus Ex Machina, you're using in out-universe answer to a in-universe question. They didn't even show how it happened, they just wake up and say "blah blah blah spell blah blah blah virgin, all better now" such a nice contrast to how the episode ended in episode 7.
Even if they did show how it works you'd just complain that you'd be seeing two girls sleeping next to Goblin Slayer naked honestly before he wakes up

I admit characters have cheerful moments. But thats not a critic. Thats just how the world works.

Who de fuck cares what critics say and use. Critics back in the 80s said The Thing from 1982 was a bad movie and that it wasn't as good as the one from the 50s. Critics aren't beyond doing stupid shit like the average human and saying bullshit

Good "peaceful" moments don't have to turn into a generic Slice-of-Life kawaii-like anime with generic comedic vibes where characters act all cutesy, careless and out of place after constantly being put in life and death situations, where grimdark tones and themes are constantly introduced. This creates tonal dissonance, it is the show's fault for trying to be something it clearly wasn't going to be
Just a friendly reminder generic isn't a valid critic my friend

They are adventurers so life and death situations are common place. Of course they'll move on and act cheerful. Acting scared and weak doesn't help you at all. Goblin Slayer even said so this episode. He fears death and yet he keeps moving. You're creating a problem out of nothing

Its not an ass pull if its foreshadowed and used for a later reveal

Oh you mean the explosion and not the eye thing. He is a silver ranked adventurer who gathers knowledge he deems useful. The episode shows how Goblin Slayer gathered his knowledge and his thirst for knowledge, even some trivial stuff (read: stuff that has no impact on his goblin slaying carrier).
Ability to freeze stuff without magic is not exactly trivial. "Thirst for knowledge" - it seems to be well established that he has single goal in mind whatever he does. He probably thinks that it may eventually become useful, e.g. to make ice surfaces or use ice expansion to break something.

Having good peaceful moments doesn't mean a show isn't displaying the opposite of that too or contradicting itself either. Its simply showing more than one aspect of the world.
The bag isn't an ass pull since he sent the Sorceress a letter not long ago which you'd know if you payed attention to the dialogue

More damage control, critics use audiences reactions and thoughts at pre-screenings (for example) for movies, to help with their critiques. Not only did fans make this claim but the way the show presented itself in episode 1 was clear it was the show's intent, how it went from a light-hearted, happy-go-lucky JRPG then suddenly turned into a dark and mature series, the way it used and treated rape indifferently to murder showed it went for shock value, to instantly draw in viewers that this series is actually a grimdark fantasy without giving proper setting, build-up or context. Good "peaceful" moments don't have to turn into a generic Slice-of-Life kawaii-like anime with generic comedic vibes where characters act all cutesy, careless and out of place after constantly being put in life and death situations, where grimdark tones and themes are constantly introduced. I don't think you're wrong to dislike the show, but you're really reaching for a lot of these points in my eyes.

You keep using "tonal dissonance" for entirely standard plot devices. The "wake up the day after fainting during disaster", the "happy-go-lucky attitude before they are crushed for their naivety", the mixing of grim dark and sexual themes, mixing sexual tension with revealing private memories or thoughts, all of this is entirely standard for the genre whether it is in games or shows.

Contrast does not equal dissonance. Mixing dark themes with sexual themes is not necessarily dissonance, it's a common and liked combination.

I also think the sexual themes they use are tacky, poorly executed and the explanations lackluster (in terms of being interesting, not in terms of being inconsistent as you say) but I don't think what you say is why.

Today's episode was decent, to be honest I was satisfied with the execution of the episode.
Well we had a start with fanservice, I expected it and seems decent enough the explanation of the healing technique that Priestess use (We have to understand that Priestess comes from a church and religion has always made it clear that virgin women are the equivalent of purity, so it is understandable why sleeping next to a virgin can cure you), we also had a bit of Sword Maiden backstory and it is a little sad her past, but Goblin Slayer seems to give a little security to the lady (Sword Maiden was incredible today, that body is quite attractive, her eyes are very beautiful, but what color would have been before she lost her sight?).
Part of the episode was quite relaxing, after they almost died, it seemed a well deserved rest, Priestess and GS looks more like brothers, I can not see them as a couple and it was fun to see how Priestess tries to change the rough personality of Goblin Slayer.
The group returns to the sewers, but now they carry a secret weapon that was given to GS, courtesy of Magician and Spearman (in the previous episode GS sent a letter to the city, it was for them), the adventurers find a creature capable of Disintegrate things, but Goblin Slayer had a trick up his sleeve and explodes the monster eye.

Don't know why the Sword-Maiden had to tell us that she was raped by goblins, I mean it was pretty obvious and it didn't really further the plot considering we already know goblins rape, hell this doesn't change anything in Goblin Slayer either considering his life's goal is already to murder goblins. It would've been better if they didn't spell it out for us.

Goblin Slayer didn't know about it yet. And when she wanted to say more, he said, "I already know." There's a specific reason she wants others to know.

Ik that but it still doesn't matter in the overall picture, it doesn't even seem to impact Goblin Slayer and his motivations so the scene is unnecessary

Seemed very necessary because it showed two broken traumatized people interacting with one another and it offered a deeper look into their psychological states. It's a very flimsy critique at best.

Not to mention, it shows Sword Maiden without her blindfold for the first time, and she shares that she can still see to some degree.

She also revealed despite her reputation as one of the greatest adventurers who overthrew the Demon Lord, she's frightened of low level monsters like goblins. Goblin Slayer is probably one of the few people who can understand that. It very much matters to the overall picture whether you understand it or not.

Quite the episode. After the cliffhanger of the last week, this was the episode for us. A lot of stuff escalated in such a short amount of time too.
It looks like some of our guys have already seen the full face of the Goblin Slayer, except for us, but only seeing a part of his face clears out a lot of vague speculations. Speculations like him being a goblin, I've heard a lot of those and even believed in some. With his former master being a goblin, I had a lot of fingers pointed at that, especially after last week's episode. I'm not quite sure that was a goblin though, it's been stated a lot of demons are in their world, and goblins haven't shown any sign of advanced intelligence other than basic trickery and battle strategy, I mean, this guy was capable of speaking the human language in such mastery, at least if he was a goblin, he's a special one.
A lot of fan service went an under the hood, I don't know what the legendary priestess was thinking for a moment, I'm glad they rather avoided that outcome.

What a way to wake up for Goblin Slayer... Next to the Priestess in the Sword Maiden's bed. That Sword Maiden really wants his "sword"..... jezus christ that lucky guy. Anyway, moving on!

Just seeing Goblin Slayer's body, he has gone through a load of injuries, my god. His master sure is a creepy being, by reading the rest of the comments here I know what it is now, cause at first I couldn't figure it out myself.

A bit more peaceful episode right up till the end. That's one odd looking eye ball.... and an explosion Megumin would be so proud of XD

Not a deal-breaker, but overall I prefer the visual design aesthetic of the manga. Don't get me wrong, I've liked some of the visuals the anime has brought to the table. I think Burglar looked really good here. As far as I can tell, this is the first time we actually saw him in color.

I think what I miss from the manga is the more exaggerated humor style. We got a bit of that in episode 4 with "You get used to it." Not sure if that was mandated by Kagyu or anyone, but notice how we've not really seen any beats similar to that style before or since.

Basically, the manga does embellish the humor and the jokes a bit more from Kagyu's writing. So if there was one significant thing I'd change about the anime, it's probably that.

Nothing like wasting a whole episode on an insignificant side story (rat killing newbies) just to skip important parts and the good stuff. Not to mention how skipping the farm defence arc created gaping plotholes in this part of the anime. Manga is awesome, LN is pretty good but aside from the first episode, the anime has pretty much nothing going for it.
Rat killing newbies were not a whole episode, 1/3 at most. And they were interacting with bunch of other characters. Defending farm in 7 minutes would be much worse.

Plot holes because of skipped farm defense is total BS, there are none. It doesn't have much impact on the story, they could easily plug it in later.

Stop with the troll? Stop with the circle-jerk and damage control lol Nobody? Go to episode 1 and 2 discussion threads! And that's the point, how can you expect audiences to take any grimdark tone and themes seriously when it breaks out into moe moe kawaii Slice-of-Life anime troupes along with generic comedic vibes and heavy fanservice? This creates tonal dissonance! To introduce other themes and tones it cannot be so out of place like this show. It literally goes from gore fest straight into Sword Maiden's boobs and fanservice while she attempts to give off a meaningful conversation about her trauma as a rape victim which falls flat because of the inconsistency of the tone!

It doesn't matter what its targeted audience is, the fact that spell had to have these specific conditions only served as an excuse for fanservice. Lazy and poor writing. When you get so much pointless fanservice, it only proves to be gratuitous and titillating, I mean look at the comments already posted here! And who gives a fcuk if this is what the author decided, so what? This doesn't get him out of criticism, he clearly can't write for shit. And nice damage control, "don't like? don't watch!" only brings forth invalid and blind hate! Everything I say is the opposite because I actually what the show. I explain that here - https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=819772

I explain my post here a lot better here also - https://myanimelist.net/blog.php?eid=820705

This episode was pretty much pointless and the studio has the power to make dots connect since the source material fails to do so, but looks like that what be happening anytime soon lol

Great and well-built episode. Now we know some more from Goblin Slayer's past, i.e. who was his master. Indeed, who it was? He looked like a brown goblin... So was he super rare noble goblin or someone else? I guess we must wait a little bit for the answer.

I really liked the moments shared with other members from Goblin Slayer's party. They are united and their bonds are stronger than ever. Moments shared with Priestess are also precious, 'cause their friendship is the strongest in this show, at least I think so. They support and change each other, getting benefits both as adventurers and human beings. Plus Priestess' and Sword Maiden's magic cured Goblin Slayer. :P

About the Evil Eye, the fight with it was decent. Sure, it can't be compared to the battle from the previous episode, or the battle was not against goblins, but I liked the cunning way in which that Evil Eye was defeated. Flour and fire in an enclosed area proved to be a deadly mix, haha.

Just when you think this anime couldn't get any more trashier, it goes on to prove you wrong every time! Lol, more tonal dissonance from how episode 7 ended to the beginning of this episode where we have the "pleasure" of seeing some fanservice of some little tits from priestess and big tits from Sword Maiden lol and all those gratuitous camera shots on her boobs for what reason? And you get jack shit out of that scene - first, how are they healed? Well reason: Deus Ex Machina!

And why did this spell have to revolve around a perverted theme that it can only work by sleeping with a virgin? Excuse for fanservice. And the Sword Maiden likes Gobin Slayer for what reasons? That whole scene just inconsistency with the tone again when trying to delve into past trauma which makes the whole thing pointless!

Then more Slice of Life and generic comedic vibes when this show is "supposedly" a dark and mature fantasy (which many claimed in the episode 1 discussion) lol and the abysmal dialogue continues, Goblin Slayers dialogue is so cringe and pointless - and this episode just keeps proving the point on how one-dimensional these characters are, they are 99% incapable of talking about anything that isn't related to Goblin Slayer, even when Lancer-wannabe and Big tits Sorceress show up, conveniently bringing a bag of ass-pull (Big tits Sorceress's dialogue is retarded, why does she sound like she's out of breath? Is it because her tits are too big?).

Then immediately jump back into action, against an enemy Goblin Slayer has never fought before, but like always, he reads the script! He just knows everything! You remember how he figured out about the Canary, well he also happened to learn about this being of chaos as well and everything went accordingly to plan. And then the dumb ass one-dimensional characters need to know how he did it, then Goblin Slayer proceeds to tell them and the viewers - this series is so garbage and the studio has had many chances to give it a little more than the trash source material. 1/10 again, these characters are so bad, and why is this show trying to give off the idea that Goblin Slayer and the Priestess has some special relationship when they don't lol

Is everything forgetting how the Priestess character regressed in the last episode where she appeared to be exactly how she was in episode 1? Lol smh

I'm glad he recovered.

For the first I got to see his appearance except the face, shame man those scars were saddening for me. It shows the guy has been through a lot.

Goblin slayer's teacher looked like a goblin though except he wasn't green, I'm really confused what he was. Anyways that was a very good episode, the way he took out that giant eye was splendidly done well. I hope I will get to see his face some day, but I think it would be the day he smile.

Great episode as usual.

Good episode : another SM's appearance with a more fragile / afraid attitude (as she mentions, closer to a regular-normal girl / woman), GS without the helmet eh, and finally his master is revealed.

Pretty relaxing episode in fact, until the end. Even though I was a bit disappointed the Beholder got defeated that fast, without threatening anyone at any moment (c'mon, he's supposed to be stronger than goblins).

So now I kinda except episodes 9 & 10 based on the next events (the latest in the manga) and - let's hope for the best - episodes 11 & 12 showing us the greatest fight of the show

It was a chill and relaxing episode even though it's kinda different from the manga, afaik the Priestess got dispelled once by the eye but eehh whatever.. it's still good and I enjoy it. I think next episode will be more action packed and good. Really can't wait for it.

This "recovery magic" used on Goblin Slayer reminds me of that thing Shiro did with Saber in the 2006 Fate Stay Night in order to restore her mana... it's almost like it was gonna be something more sexual but it got toned down (just like in Fate Stay Night) to just "sleeping in the same bed naked".
“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth. But the world isn't perfect, and the law is incomplete..." -Alphonse Elric

I'll take anything like The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. Anything as good as that.

How did he have sex with them or get erection when he was unconscious?
Also he was dreaming about his master at that time. xD
Okay, done with joking.
It's clinche setting, plot, raiding dugeon and killed boss in the end in every episode.
But they made it really good that I didn't even realize twenty minutes had passed already.
Enjoyed it pretty much. (5/5)!

first, how are they healed? Well reason: Deus Ex Machina!
And why did this spell have to revolve around a perverted theme that it can only work by sleeping with a virgin? Excuse for fanservice.
I mean using virgins as a form of healing or having strong spiritual power isn't anything new so not really a Deus Ex Machina since its very common in fantasy and isn't beyond the realm of expectations in a fantasy series

And the Sword Maiden likes Gobin Slayer for what reasons? That whole scene just inconsistency with the tone again when trying to delve into past trauma which makes the whole thing pointless!
Scene isn't inconsistent since she likes him because of her trauma. She fears goblins, Goblin Slayer kills goblins. Not hard to put 2 and 2 together

Then more Slice of Life and generic comedic vibes when this show is "supposedly" a dark and mature fantasy (which many claimed in the episode 1 discussion) lol and the abysmal dialogue continues, Goblin Slayers dialogue is so cringe and pointless - and this episode just keeps proving the point on how one-dimensional these characters are, they are 99% incapable of talking about anything that isn't related to Goblin Slayer, even when Lancer-wannabe and Big tits Sorceress show up, conveniently bringing a bag of ass-pull.
Ignore what others claim because its simply their perception and can't be used as a critic of the series since how others perceive the show has nothing to do with what the actual show is and your disappointment of it not being what others see it as
Having good peaceful moments doesn't mean a show isn't displaying the opposite of that too or contradicting itself either. Its simply showing more than one aspect of the world.
The bag isn't an ass pull since he sent the Sorceress a letter not long ago which you'd know if you payed attention to the dialogue

Again pay attention to whats happening
Goblin Slayer doesn't know anything about the Eye. He doesn't even bother to care what it is. Its the Lizard Shaman who knows anything about it if anything
Just ignore him. He is here at every discussion post as a troll or something. If he wasnt a troll, he would have stopped watching the show since he claims that he hates the show. No use trying to correct him lol. Everyone here knows that by now. Heh, I bet he would probably respond to this comment in some way to correct me...Welp, time to move on
