In your opinion, what's been the best era of anime to date (I'll say an era is like a 3 year time span)? What were your favorite animes in that time period and were there any notable trends in themes that made this era special or interesting? |

Three year span? I'll go with 2007-2010. My anime casual friend IRL called me an old fag. kek. |

Probably right now since there's so much of it that it's hard not find at least a few shows you like each season. Even if there's there's a slew of stuff I don't like/isn't in my preferred genre, I still have enough good shit to keep me occupied. I'm a newer anime fan so I'm a little biased, but that also means I don't have nostalgia goggles on anything. |

The OVA boom (80's-90's) I would say was the best era for anime because it had better fanservice, stoytelling imo and had a more serious and dark feel than the modern anime era, it also had more female characters with noses and lips. Favorites from this era are Black Jack 1993 OVA, Dallos, Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal, Armitage III, Megazone 23, Riding Bean, Bubblegum Crisis. |

I'm gonna have to go with the near-2007 era, when anime was actually good, and had reached its peak. |

Summer 2014. Black Bullet, No Game No Life, Isshukan Friends, Tokyo Ghoul, Zankyou no Terror, Tokyo ESP. Definitely a season I enjoyed the most. But for personal desires. Summer 2015. Because High School DxD BorN. High School DxD is the anime I've enjoyed the most and will continue to enjoy. My favorite one. A masterpiece. |

2006-2009 according to my list and average scores for those years. Doesn't seem to have much similarities besides a lot of badassery (Hellsing Ultimate, Black Lagoon, Baccano!, Detroit Metal City, Stranger). |

Its either 2005-2008 (or 2006-2009 i dunno), or 2010-2013, wich is my personal favourite, but i think its more fair to pick a ten year period and say its 2005 to now, omiting a couple of bad years around 2010 and 2014. Again i would have to check every year to make the numbers fairer and im too lazy to do that for a forum post. An era in this medium is more of a decade and we are in the second half of the 2010s era. |

I would have to say 2011-2014 was the best era of anime to date. During this time there was diversity in the genre's of anime produced. During this time it was easy to get into anime since there was something to meet anyone's tastes. There was plenty of action shows as well as slice of life and shoujo's. It was also a time where animation styles showed a change towards what we see today. |

The best Era for anime is the 90's for sure. They are many amazing animes that came in early 2000's 2006/2007 / 2008/2010/2011/2012/2013/2014 too but the 90 are the golden age . The 90's had shows like cowboy bebop, EVA, Utena, Berserk, Escaflowne and Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal, but my favorite resent anime year are 2012/2013 . |

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu (disappearance) Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei Keep in mind, I haven't seen that much, but this seems to be it for me |

I've generally found that good shows are available throughout the times, the difference I feel is the amount of shit we have to wade through to find it. There's certainly a lot of mediocre or bad anime around, but there's still good stuff. cruisin1600 said: 2006-2009 according to my list and average scores for those years. Interesting to see it's 2006-2008. Probably because I've only watched shows which have been remained relevant enough to be still recommended maybe 2012-2014-ish. |

Every month I watch some from that era and every so often I find something great, that almost no one have heard about. 3 years, well this is hard. oh nvm, 2005-2008 has 6 of my favorite anime (top10) and bunch of other great series. Death Note Darker than Black Aria Series Tsubasa: Tokyo Revelations Nodame Cantabile Gintama Monster Mushishi School Rumble 2nd Season NHK ni Youkoso! Baccano! Soul Eater Natsume Yuujinchou although that's 4 years, but that time period is easily the best for me |

In terms of high quality productions and new original series, 2003 - 2007 was an absolutely insane period for anime. Madhouse goes mad, coming out with hit after hit after hit. Bones and Production I.G. make their biggest marks during this period. Gonzo releases three quality series!?!? Seriously Gonzo, I thought you were supposed to be a shit studio. We are introduced to studio Manglobe, and two of their biggest and best series. And a slew of other godly new original series such as Kino's Journey, Mushishi, Mononoke, and Baccano!. Madhouse: Tokyo Godfathers, Texhnolyze, Gungrave, Beck, Monster, Paranoia Agent, Akagi, Paprika, Kemonozume, Black Lagoon, Death Note, Kaiji, Shigurui Bones: Wolf's Rain, Fullmetal Alchemist, Sword of the Stranger, Darker than Black Production I.G.: Moribito, Ghost Hound, Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd GIG, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society Gonzo: Last Exile, Gankutsuou, Welcome to the NHK! Manglobe: Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy Studio 4°C: Mind Game, Tekkon Kinkreet Others greats: Kino's Journey, Planetes, Interstella 5555, Zipang, Mushishi, Gurren Lagann, Mononoke, Toward the Terra, Baccano! |

Pipebomb_Teller said: In Japan the "Anime Boom" that started in early 80's is typically referred to as the golden age of animation. That's not to say they are the best, but more that it was the time when animes received the most growth and acceptance. The Golden Age of American Comic Books is considered to be when the modern concept of the American comic (i.e. the superhero genre) crystallized, sometime between the late 1930s and the 1950s. Similarly, the Golden Age of American Animation ran from the late 1920s to around the late 1960s and was also when a lot of key characters, concepts, companies, and the business itself took firmer shape. Same thing with the Golden Age of Television (late 1940s to about 1960). Other times, Golden Age refers to the BEST time. Some argue that the 2000s saw the Golden Age of American Television. To me, I ascribe to the first idea--when the concepts and form an industry would take first crystallizes and grows from a small to major cultural force. Thus, while I wouldn't say it was the best age, I'd put the Golden Age of Anime as starting in the mid-to-late 1960s with shows like Mahou Tsukai Sally, Tetsuwan Atom (aka Astro Boy) and Tetsujin 28 (aka Gigantor), and probably ending that era at the end of the 1970s with the release of Mobile Suit Gundam, which would usher in the Silver Age. As for the greatest era? 1997-2000 and 2002-2006 are pretty-much tied for me. '97-'00 saw one of the last and greatest periods of innovation before the advent of computer-assisted animation (i.e. no longer painting directly onto cells), when studios could take risks on stories and a lot of very good original shows were released. '02-'06 saw a lot of adaptations but many of those adaptations would be game-changers and start very strong trends that have persisted well into the current decade. |

Between the late 70s and the early 80s Japanese tv animation had become an artistic and commercial reality, prominent internationally, with an unmatched technical capability in the world, very short lead times and competitive prices, thanks to technological innovation and the localization of the different stages of production in countries with lower labor costs such as South Korea. The animation in this period reached its zenith with a significant increase of television productions. In addition to the audience of children, very interested in the industry were even teenagers and young adults, and this encouraged the expansion of more mature and dramatic issues, and just then began to go out for the first time the nickname of otaku. Although it remained essentially a domestic business with a clear dominant consumption pattern. |
