Well.

The first 10 minutes or so of that episode managed to both be gut-bustingly hilarious and extremely disturbing. I haven’t laughed that hard while watching an anime episode in a very long time. In short, it was great, and it as well as the King’s rebirth was basically the entire focus of the episode.

While the scene with Pouf and Youpi feeding the King was indeed comedy gold, it was also a very important moment for both Royal Guards and a fascinating look into their psychology. We’ve seen their undying loyalty and dedication to the King displayed throughout the arc (especially Pouf, the over-the-top behavior he showed here has been a part of his character since the episodes just before the Invasion began), and how they are always putting his interests first and always aiming to protect him. Obviously, they feel strongly towards the person they were born to protect. Seeing him so close to death brought out their deepest and most passionate feelings, which is why they were so ecstatic that they had managed to revive him and that more importantly (to them) the King had complimented them for their efforts. Now, at the end of the sequence where they are reviving him, we see flashes of various animals feeding their offspring, topped off by a mother breastfeeding a child.

Basically, Youpi and Pouf think that their feelings towards the King are the feelings parents have for their children. Many animals have a natural, innate instinct to protect their young, and the Royal Guards were born with this instinct, which manifests itself as “unconditional love.”
However, the imagery and phrases used during that particular scene are not consistent with expressions of maternal love. The moaning, the blushing, the repeated use of words such as “pleasure” and “bliss”….those all have connotations of sexual desire and pleasure. The Royal Guards are confused- they are associating their feelings for the King with the feelings parents have towards children, when that’s clearly not the case. This depth of feeling from creatures who are supposed to be simple animals is likely a result of human influence, the same influence which brought about their individuality and fractured social structure. There are possible rings of Freudian theory here (which wouldn’t be the first, as the “ego” has been referred to before explicitly); there are some possible vague references to the Oedipus complex in the Royal Guard’s behavior, considering its nature and their age, but it’s not too strong a similarity so I won't go too far down that train of thought.

Still, it’s a momentous moment for the Royal Guards; they have achieved their ultimate purpose in life, protecting the King, and by nursing him back to health have essentially become like parents to him. They have reached the pinnacle of their established roles as Ants. Ironically, this probably would not have been possible without the interference of their human genes, highlighting again the good and bad of acquiring traits common to humanity.

The way the King is restored quite literally resembles breastfeeding, and his actions and lines afterwards all emphasize his rebirth. The fact that he has almost no memories, that he’s stronger and healthier than ever before- the King literally resembles a newborn child, arguably as much as when he was born the first time. The biggest difference with this second birth is that the King has decided to be called by his real name- an indication that he’s retained his human qualities. This has interesting implications and makes the story even more unpredictable than it already was- there are so many ways events can progress from this point forward. I’m glad I was right about the King’s survival (as insane as the bombing was, if he had died it would have been rather anti-climactic), but at the same time it does make Netero’s sacrifice seem a bit worthless…unless Togashi decides to be hyper-realistic and make it so that the Ants actually suffered radiation poisoning, Netero’s efforts seem a bit wasted. It’s a minor point, though, I’m not too bothered by it.

Looking forward to next week. Pouf better not kill Komugi- it’s about the only thing he could do that would probably make me actively dislike him. Or if he kills Killua. Or Knuckle. Or Melereon. Or….never mind.

Wasn't quite expecting the first half of the episode...

Overall though I'm kinda happy that Meruem is still alive, just because he's a really interesting character. I'm curious to see how he'll react to returning to the palace.

Holy shit Meruem lives. I'm actually kind of glad that he is still alive. Felt it wasn't a proper way for a great villain like him to go like that without any closure. I don't see how they're going to beat him now though.

i'm both happy and sad the King is alive simply because i wanted to see more of him but Why is he stronger?! i feel with this memory lost hes just gonna go off on his own way and quit this whole ruling thing as crazy as that sounds
Actually I thought his memory loss would make him act the way he used to, i.e. a maniacal killing machine.
there was also that possibility i didn't think of,still excited to see what path he takes nonetheless Komugi is key factor in it a at least that's how i see it

From what I've gathered, voice recording seems to be one of the last processes in the making of anime episodes. So, that "week" you mentioned could still be going on. :O

Yeah, for me, it is good their inconsistent is actually consistent that those ants is "human" and animal hybrid. We know how human mind works.

All i can say is Netero's sacrifice will not in vain.

This isn't half as bad as some other threads I've seen. Look at the first few episode threads for Free! or Shinsekai Yori episode 8 (haven't seen the episode, but I hear the backlash was terrible).

If anything, the reaction for this episode is better than I thought it would be after I saw it.

To be honest, I would have preferred if the king just died in the explosion, it would have been a great example of the triumph of technology over problems that cannot be solved with human strength alone.
I do wonder what is going to happen next, as none of the remaining hunters would be able to scratch the king given his effortless triumph over Netero. Well, I look forward to how they are going to resolve this arc.

So far pretty predictable. There is no way Meruem could die that fast, given that he has not even made a move yet. In fact, I would rage if he really died. Given all the developments and rising actions leading to climax, the climax needs to be juicy and good, not just some half assed "technology rules over all". This is Hunter X Hunter, not some mecha anime, and thats how it lives up to its name.
And It's all thanks to the royal guards who got there on time to feed him. The king owed them his life.

And well, the unexpected part was the expressions of the guards. I just love how Pouf is always taking things seriously and turnimg everything into drama.

And Youpi too?? Never saw that coming....

This episode is better received than I thought it would. Glad that yaoi humor is acceptable with battle shounen fans. XD

But this is when I was conviced that the Royal Guards deserved a better King, Meruem has only made things harder for them. Pouf and Youpi offered their aura like it was nothing and they would have given him everything if he asked even if it kills them. They are so loyal, it makes me like and hate them at the same time. Where is their human side? Why is it not rebelling like with the ants back in NGL.

I actually thought the King was dead. If there is one thing I noticed in HxH it's that the arcs and especially the fights are very anticlimactic. I dont see how they are going to kill Meruem now. The only way i see him dying is if he spontaneously just blows up, an after effect of the bomb or gets some incurable disease.

And what the hell happened to Youpi?? His personality took a 360 and now hes orgasiming over Meruem like his Homo bro Pouf...

Depends on what the climax is conceived to be, and I prefer the endings that way.

Not exactly the RG's aura, but their own bodies.
Which, in turn, provides Meruem their aura as well, I guess.

But, wouldn't humans/living beings age if they were to give away their Nen?

I fail to see what's so "disgusting" about it. It was meant to be funny, and I know I wouldn't want to have it any other way.

In any case, Hisoka's schwing part seemed much more erotic than this, and no one's complaining about that.

Well its just the way in which nuclear bombs work, if you don't die instantly from one of the hottest things in the known universe (edit: the bombs have been said to possibly exceed 100 million degrees C / 180 million F) you then have to deal with the fact that all the oxygen within x miles is now gone from the all consuming fire, then there's the whole overpressure thing which tends to instantly compact everything like it's a very enthusiastic origami master in a paper shop.

Oh and the you're already dead style radiation which at impact point with no shielding is going to basically cause near instant radiation sickness unconciousness and death, which coincidentally Pouf and Youpi just sort of had a party in as well.

But then that's kind of my problem with this arc in general due to its 'slightly' silly premise they can handwave the sheer devastation of something like this because magic ants with no real set capabilities.

Maybe the RG are magical, but CO2 and then water befell the lion-guy ant.

Also, the way the anime adapts the manga is particularly handwavy already. There was more to the CO2 situation, as well as Killua's words to Palm.

A bit more to say beyond this, but that's all it really amounts to anyway. In hindsight, not that big of an issue.

Homophobic caricature? I felt Togashi was just highlighting the extreme level of loyalty the guards have for their king - that his praises and recovery elicit satisfaction not unlike sexual pleasure to them. It could be taken as humorous on the surface, but I think it was meant to be more disturbing than anything - how fanatically subservient these terrible, mega-powerful creatures are to their master - that they're willing to feed themselves alive so that he may live. In this regard, they're totally non-human.

^Togashi has also been said to be a supporter of the LGBT community.

And, yes - on my personal take, I was more disturbed/humored than appalled/disgusted by the scene that plainly depicts what they were characterized to do.

I don't disagree with you really, it's less to do with the reasoning and more the portrayal, the choice to display the devotion using the more offensive parts of Pouf's 'fabulous' nature as people have put it.

Then again to be fair I already didn't like this episode so confirmation bias of finding more stuff to dislike isn't beyond it.

Guys, I'm sorry for my bad english, but let me say just a few things, this episode was not gay, because it showed how chimera ants are neither male nor female, they just feel sexual attraction for the king (apparently). Also, this was like a rebirth for Meruem, because the first time he was born just as 'the king', now he is born as 'Meruem'. This happened because he ate Pouf and Yupi, so we could say that Meruem is born thanks to them and this implies they became like the Queen, which is possible because they have no sex.The narrator said it too, they reached the level of Queen, which is the pinnacle of their species (whether they have sex or not, I'm still not sure and my interpretation of the episode might be wrong).

It was weird as shit, I know, but it actually made sense, it's just that Togashi is fucking crazy and likes to write this sort of stuff and I found it hilarious.
