Ne Zha 2 is breaking box office records and just became the highest grossing animated movie of all time! Made more money than your average Japanese Anime film.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_animated_films

https://x.com/shanghaidaily/status/1891815182189449599

Donghua is on the rise!

Other records this Donghua (Chinese animation) has broken

  1. the highest-grossing film in China
  2. the highest grossing non-English language film and the first such film to reach the $1 billion mark
  3. It also sits as the highest-grossing animated film
  4. the highest-grossing film of 2025 (so far)
  5. 8th-highest-grossing film of all time. (So far)
  6. 1st animated film in history to hit $2B at Global box office

On the 11th day of its release, Ne Zha 2 became the highest grossing film in a single box office territory, surpassing the $936 million grossed by Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) in North America, which itself had taken 165 days to reach that mark.

What percentage of the gross is from domestic audience?

Nevermind, found the data, ~97.5% of the gross is domestic, so only ~2.5% outside of China.

Donghua will eventually surpass anime in popularity. People started watching anime because of its Japanese appeal. Sadly, anime companies let Americans into production committees, which westernized anime, and now the industry is collapsing because of it. I hope donghua companies don't make the same mistakes that anime companies did.

@ForgotEyeWasHere some Donghua has some great use of CGI as well.

I was about to say I never even heard of this film before. A film that is supposedly #1 with no Producers, Licensors, or even Studio. lol

World wide international success is a stretch for this film since this film wasn't even featured in any theaters where I live nor in any theaters in Japan either. lol

This film I doubt is even dubbed in English. If it's in Mandarin, it's going to flop hard where I live or any other place in North America. People barely will go see Japanese Anime films in the theaters in Nihongo with subtitles. When a Japanese Anime is dubbed in English the theaters are always packed. I doubt anyone is going to throw their money on some animated Chinese film no one has ever heard of completely in Mandarin.

@ColourWheel well it could get an English dub later. The 1st film has an English dub.

There are Chinese Americans, Canadians and Australians watching the movie.

Not watching it (when it gets released on video) since even the donghua fans can't figure out to which of all the previous Ne Zha movies is this a sequel.
Also its fans are kind of dicks. I asked on Reddit "Why should I watch this? Give me a reason! Praise it to me for what it is aside of making a lot of money!" and I got a bunch of downvotes and no actual explanations.

Well that’s sad.
The 1st Ne Zha movie is free on You tube (with ads) if you want to watch. It even has the English dub if you change it in the settings.

lol That's even assuming Chinese Americans, Canadians, and Australians are even into donghua in the 1st place. That would be like saying a bunch of Americans, Canadians, and Australians living in China would go to the theater to see some silly Western cartoon simply because it's a Western cartoon. lol

The 1st ne zha movie was China’s most successful animated film of all time. Now the sequel is even more successful.

The 2nd movie come out during Chinese new year and has been breaking records ever since it’s release.

Not to diminish the merits of the movie, but such numbers are always skewed by inflation (a dollar of 1995 and 2025 does not have the same value) and the price of theatre tickets.
Instead, what's its number of sold theater tickets ?

The number of sold tickets does seem more suitable for such comparisons, but it would still require to account for various factors, such as population growth, global cinema infrastructure, and others.

@StarThrone I got back an estimate of 248.2 million tickets
average ticket price form here: https://www.cartoonbrew.com/box-office-report/chinese-sensation-ne-zha-2-overtakes-inside-out-2-as-highest-grossing-animated-feature-in-a-single-market-245494.html : "According to Chinese research firm Entgroup, the average ticket price for Ne Zha 2 is USD$6.85."

1.7B / 6.85 = 248.175.182,4817518248

I also found a quote of it selling over 200 million here, though you can determine if credible: 'As of Thursday, Ne Zha 2 has also become the first film in Chinese cinema history to have over 200 million viewers, according to CCTV.' ( https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202502/1328382.shtml )

@Zarutaku I kinda feel the sarcasm, and honestly, I laughed.
Sorry, I did not mean to sound like "akshually" in my comment.
But it is true, if we wanted to be reeeally accurate and impartial, we would need to indeed to account for population growth, cinema access, and whatever xD

@BilboBaggins365 I believe that's the one reason that donghua hasn't caught up with anime yet, because they keep porn banned. All they have to do is loosen up those specific restrictions on donghua, and anime is finished. If donghua begins to westernize, then they will fall too.

@watsym wow that's impressive. I just looked up this list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_by_box_office_admissions), and the movie is already in 34th place. Your estimations were on point, the list gives it 245 million tickets.
On a side note, it's unsurprising the top movies (in the list) of all time are all chinese. What's surprising is that it's late 70s and 80s chinese movies.

@BilboBaggins365 I believe that's the one reason that donghua hasn't caught up with anime yet, because they keep porn banned. All they have to do is loosen up those specific restrictions on donghua, and anime is finished. If donghua begins to westernize, then they will fall too.
@ForgotEyeWasHere Well that ain't changing dude lol. The West is far more permissive than China will ever be.

But people say 2 is actually a sequel to the 2019 one...also kind of in an alternative timeline.

The success is somewhat meaningless, as long as it's almost entirely inside China.

Basically no one outside the country has seen this film. Of the 1.68 billion USD gross, 0.007 billion of it came from US opening weekend (according to Wikipedia).

I did notice this playing here in Canada, but only in this one theater that plays international movies. Maybe it's about to blow up over here, but I highly doubt it. Even if it succeeds here, I expect it would be mostly thanks to the significant Chinese community here.

Adaptation of well-liked Chinese legend done by Chinese authors does very well in China. Wow... not.
Still, those numbers aren't anything to sneer about - in fact that says just how actually big the Chinese market really is.

Wow. It feels unreal to see something non American at the top of the list. China's box office was already rising since Covid. I wish anime is also able to give the animated film market some competition.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

I watched the original "Ne Zha" back in November and while it was a decent film I didn't think it was that spectacular. However if I have to give it credit for one thing "Ne Zha" along with the film "White Snake" (also a Chinese animated movie) both are very similar in both style, tone, design, and story to many Pixar films and media. Because the Pixar & Disney formulas have proven to be highly successful amongst audiences especially families, along with China's massive population, I can see why "Ne Zha 2" became such a hit. However I personally don't see a Chinese animated film such as this or others surpassing anime or American animation in the Western world anytime soon.

An animated movie that managed to appeal to the four-quadrants of the local Chinese market? Kudos to the makers of this movie.

Agreed. Though with how 2D animation is perceived nowadays by average movie goers, we'll be lucky if we get a 2D animated movie that surpasses the original Lion King's box office worldwide gross of $970 million.

Never heard of this movie until I absent mindedly checked MAL and saw this thread. Watched the trailer. I am not keen on the typical Western animated beanface look. Feels like typical Dreamworks schlock?

@Alpha-Nine The highest grossing anime film has a gross of $507 million. It's hard to imagine anything getting close to a billion. Maybe one of the new Kny, CSM or Jjk films break the box office records, but again, 1 billion seems too hard to beat.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

You'd have to be a fool to believe Chinese propaganda. Happened to the fools who invested in gsx, nio, iq, etc. stocks and lost a lot of money. Not to mention all those education scam stocks. They even lie about their demographics.

So believing that a china only movie made more than movies available globally on 6 continents betrays peoples' lack of critical thinking. It's been 3 years since people got burned for believing their news and stats when trading their stocks and the masses already forgot about it? Sad.

Also wikipedia is not a reliable source and the two linked articles are a joke, since one just parrots the other so there's just one source, a chinese one. It's becoming a very common tactic, reminds me of the guy writing about the black samurai book and editing the wikipedia articles about it for profits.
