You know the one. Where it sounds like they're sighing into the microphone, in the middle and at the end of every single sentence. Oooh god I wanna strangle them. The most egregious example currently is the MC in Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra, but you really hear it everywhere more or less, and I noticed VAs starting to do this way back in 2018.

I mean, what the fuck went wrong...
Did some idiot executive decide one day this'll pull better ratings?
Is it some new fetish among the youth?
Do they just hate the viewers?

All I want is a show to watch, japan. Not to hear a recording of your DEEP BREATHING EXERCISES!

It's like these people spend their free time just thinking of new ways to ruin anime.

Then don't watch it? Watch something you like rather than forcing yourself to watch sth you clearly does not like.

@Zarutaku
No. The exhalation noise they throw onto the end of their speech.

voice acting has gone to shit nowadays, can't blame you for getting annoyed, I myself encounter disgusting sounds the VAs make for no reason

@XMGA030 if you like the stories but does not like VAs read the manga there is nothing wrong to be manga only fan, or if you don't like it then do watch something you actually like.

Do you even watch anime, or just 4kids dubs? How do you not know what I'm referring to.

Initially, when I looked at your post I was like "Yeah, this guy's probably overreacting".
But on second thought, you might be onto something, because I kinda get that "feeling" but I can't really seem to put my finger on it. Hmm.

Anyway, one form of voice acting I don't like is the exaggerated s-s-s-stutter, s-s-s-stammering voice à la Bocchi the Rock and most recently Silent Witch. No lie when the mc stammers, it sounds like she's getting pounded.

@XMGA030 That is, a person asked for an example of what you are talking about and instead of several normal examples, you start talking some kind of crap and yes, answering in advance, I watch in the original, headphones and do not hear any problems, including Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra and I do not understand what you are talking about.

Been a while since I watched anything with JP voices, but English dubs are starting to do something that fits your description as well and it drives me crazy lmao. It's particularly common with male VAs, and it just sounds like them trying to act in a brooding way or something.

I am pretty sure what they're doing is a result of straining to change their voice into a tone they don't naturally speak with, so they have to tighten their airways to achieve that tone and force more air out to sound a bit more natural. When they finish speaking or pause for a breath, you hear the last gasp of air escaping before they relax.

Again, just talking about Eng dubs, but I've heard similar stuff in a few clips from anime and games with JP voices, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same thing.

@jacobPOL Can't think of anything off the top of my head to reference, but I wouldn't be surprised if I ran into some while I'm watching through Godzilla Singular Point. I'm also watching Gundam AGE, but the VAs are a lot more cartoony in that show so I think it's less likely to pop up in that. If I catch an example I'll make a note and reply later.

@valico It also depends on the show you are watching, for example my top 10 favorite anime does not feature these sounds op has mentioned and also many of these anime in my top 10 also use normal use of Japanese and for example in detective conan they use multiple dialects such as osakan dialect and dialect from tokyo.

@jacobPOL bro wtf are you talking about lmfao of course it's going to depend on the show, because it's going to depend on the voice actor

@valico It is literally the case yet op of this thread tries to overexagarate as if this was in every single modern anime.

Also most of the shows I have watched have very little to no sounds op has mentioned in my list.

Relevant ProZD skit

@valico I've noticed it in recent English dubs too. Especially Matt Shipman as Floch in AoT. Once you notice it, you can't un-notice it.
Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.

@jacobPOL Well, yeah, they're speaking hyperbolically, but it is something that's definitely significantly more common than it used to be. It's also not insanely noticeable, so it'd be easy to ignore or just remain ignorant of, at least in ENG. I primarily watch old stuff so I don't run into it as often, but I've been watching more recent shows and hearing it. To be fair, it's also not an anime exclusive thing. I hear it in some audiobooks which have multiple people doing the reading.

Like I said before, I think it's an issue with VAs having to strain their voices in tense, dramatic tones. It's not an unnatural thing to occur in normal speech, but it does occur more frequently than normal in anime voice acting from what I've observed.

That's not an example. Go watch Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra and hear the MC's breathy sounding speech.

How are you people so dense? I can't believe I'm the only motherfucker who hears VAs do this stuff. They're breathing right in your ear!

@XMGA030 Bruh, nobody’s wasting time watching isekai slop just to figure out what some random MAL thread is whining about. If this so-called 'exhalation sound' was really as common as you claim, you’d have no trouble pulling up a random YouTube clip from any of the dozens of shows that supposedly have it.
