I often forget to rate or only give 10 to anime i like, but it's getting difficult to identify the ones I liked more, so maybe I should give more bad rankings? heelp

Depends how much I enjoyed it. 10 out of 10 are anime's that resonate me and the lowest (3 out of 10) are better off as trash. Most bad anime's i rate, tend to be around 5 out of 10 as I'm aware they're not good, but I still find some enjoyment out of them, compare to some lackluster show's i personally despise.

8-10) love
6-7) like
3-5) watchable (3s are barely watchable, I don't regret completing them)
1-2) dislike (usually dropped)

In this way, I make full use of the rating scale. The only issue is that I don't really think that my 4s are bad, I wish MAL defined that score differently (like "subpar"); four synonyms of bad for the scores between 1 and 4 aren't necessary.

@IrnFox yeah I saw that, I like finding complex profiles and like that in your own method you change things based in your liking and preferences.

@Nirinbo I didn't know what subpar is, I feel that ''bad, very bad'' and such is easier to identify but i get that it can be repetitive.

every anime starts at 10/10 for me.
-1 point for bad voice acting
-1 point for bad OST
-1 point for lazy art(bunch of still-frames, bad choreography etc)
-1 for bad pacing
-1 to -2 for cut content
-0 to -3 for enjoyment(or lack of enjoyment).
using this rating method, i usually end up with 6-7 as a score (i rarely score 5 or less), which would count as a 60-70% score...meaning it scored a C or D...which is completely fair for an average/slightly subpar anime imho.

@Naho2863 Judging by your mean score I would have guessed a 9 or below was bad.

I personally think it's important to have more granularity at the top. The difference between bad and terrible isn't as important as the difference between good and great. When you look through your list it should be obviously which ones stand out among the rest. I do notice you don't tend to rate much and you usually give it a 10 if you rate it at all. You should spread out your ratings more, especially if you're finding your current system isn't work. I know some people get by fine on a 1 point scale because in their mind either they liked something (10) or it doesn't matter to them (unrated) but if you can think more critically about media then that's not enough.

5 is Mediocre, it's the middle of the scale

6 - 10 is 'I enjoyed' with the amount I enjoyed the show increasing with the number

1 - 4 is 'I did not enjoy' with the amount I disliked the show increasing the smaller the number gets

For me 1-4 are just different levels of terrible shows, 5 is a show that has nothing good to show but that isn't bad either necessarily, 6 is a fine show that I wouldn't recommend to watch, 7 is a good show that entertained me but that isn't anything special, 8 is a really good show, 9 is an incredible show (basically perfect) with very few flaws that constanly maintained me engaged and 10 is simply the best possible experience that you could have in the medium (taking into account personal preference and the genre of the anime).

Enjoyment. Some months ago , I found myself having to compare different series and their seasons just to justify which one was better objectively. I got tired of doing that and switched to enjoyment, where I didn't have to compare like that and rate freely just off how I enjoyed a series.

I like to ramble about my ratings, so you can check my profile for a more detailed look (only if you'd like to!), but I'll try and simplify it here.

When I first joined MAL I rated purely on enjoyment. I think my mean score back then was in the 8 range? I used to have something crazy like twenty or so 10s lol.
Back then, I don't think I rated anything below a 7 for fear of being too harsh.
But now, especially after checking out other reviewers and profiles (and hopefully they don't mind me tagging them here), like:
@ApplePieHunter
@krplatz
@duchessliz87 (some of her forum posts about rating I've found really informative!)
@LordSozin
@ZephSilver (I'd especially recommend their blog post about ratings; it was a huge wake up call for me!)
We've never really interacted personally, I don't think... but I'm really appreciative of all of them for indirectly helping me to at least try and rate more critically. (It's a constant work in progress, though.)

I try to find a balance between rating for enjoyment and rating "objectively". Specifically, what these reviewing styles opened me up to was the realization that I simply wasn't using MAL's whole rating scale - which I find is really prevalent here where people give something a 10 if they simply liked it, and a 7 if they thought it was average or okay. And then they don't use any number lower than that on the rating scale.

When I rate now, I really try to see a 5 as average (as it truly should be), and increase or lower my score based on different factors.
On my profile, I say it's based on how things make me feel: and that's to explain that I will probably rate something higher if it really managed to make me emotional and did something specifically really well, to the point that I'll excuse shortcomings for it.

But on the other hand, I will rate something lower even if I personally enjoyed it, or found it exciting; if to me, it had shortcomings that I couldn't overlook in terms of a lack of story/character development, plot setup + payoff, etc. Especially in comparison to other shows that did what it did, better.
In that sense, I'd like to think that my list shows not only when I really couldn't stand something, but also when I really fell in love with something and how much I truly found it special - however, most importantly, I really only try to give higher scores both when I liked it and when I think it's actually something the work in question deserves. (Subjectively and semi-objectively, of course.)

So with all that said, I start with a 5 as a true average. A 4 is where I start to feel not just apathetic but actively disappointed; while a 6 is something I feel had potential to be so much better. And on the extremes of each side of the scale, a 1 is... just... just... no. And a 10 is something that changed me, something that I felt was as close as possible to perfection - of which I currently only have three.

I agree with @zombie_pegasus that starting by spreading out your ratings might help! Personally, I feel like someone's list should at least reflect what they enjoy a little; but if you give everything a 10 (or nearly everything a 10), then that's probably why it's hard for you (and others) to get a sense of what you like and how you feel about what you watched. The difference between good and great, truly is important.

@zombie_pegasus As I said in the post if I like an anime I rate it 10 or forget to do it, that's why I only have 10 or unrated ones, but when I search something to rewatch I can't find any outstanding anime like you just said, that's why I started thinking about rating and gave some a 9 or 8 but couldn't figure out what value i want to give to the ratings

[A]fter all, if you're not a critic, or you don't view your scores like an absolute ranking of media, there's really only six scores: 10, 9, 8, 7, 5 and 1.
Whenever someone gives a 10, a 9 or an 8, it's a 10/10 show that either did or didn't hit that person strong enough for them to give it a 10.
[...] the 8/10 show is just as good [as the 10/10 one], it's just not as "personal",
A 7/10 is something that they liked in spite of recognizing some big flaws in it: Maybe some parts of it were annoying, but you liked the experience [...].
And then a 5/10 is something that you didn't like in spite of recognizing the quality of it, so you were like "Oh, I'm pretty sure that this is good but it just really bothered me".
And then a 1/10 is just something that that sucks too much to be judged as successful art.

I don't think any of the other scores really mean anything to anyone, unless they've seen enough stuff to sav so many sevens that they start saying "some of the sevens are worse than the other sevens, so they're sixes".

I would that, for now, start simply "trickling down" your 10/10's.
Pick one and say "Is this as good as this other day? Did I like it as much?", and if the answer is no, you make it a 9/10.
Then you repeat the same process with your 9/10's, then with your 8/10's, and so on, and so forth.

Overall how enjoyable it was to me. Most of the time it's an 8/10 but sometimes 7, 9, 6, 10, rarely 5, depending on how much I enjoyed it.

10-Peak.
9-Really great, bordering on peak.
8-Overall fun to watch, basically the standard.
7-Decent enough.
5/6-Okay. Not bad, but not that good either.

If I enjoyed it a lot then it's a 9 or 10. If it had some problems that couldn't be ignored, then it's 8. If I didn't enjoy it or the complains were far bigger, then the score is 7 or lower.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

Just rate however you want tbh, the rating's don't matter much anyway

I personally rate this way

10 - I really really love it
9 - same as 10, but not enough to be a 10
8 - I really liked it but something was lacking for it to be a 9
7 - I liked it, that's all, wasn't bored so It's good :D
6 - I was bored or bad animation/art merged with mediocre plot or plot was so ??? even I couldn't give it a 7 XD
5 - I rarely use it, lately I only rated BPRO season 3 this way, cuz it came back after the year's with a new season and everything downgraded and I was so dissapointed :((
4-1 - Idk why would I even watch something so bad to rate it this way XD

@MechaFanBoy1979 I find it difficult to rate low on shows I watch, or I don't even rate them, but I'm seeing that's normal
If you think an anime that you are watching is a 3 do you continue watching it?
@Naho2863 @Naho2863 Hmmmm, I ain't too sure how exactly you rate you're series, but i guess you're right about it being normal if i considered an anime a 3.

.....Despite the fact, i only have two anime that's both a 3 and 4, everything else is a 5 to 10. While I'm a bit tolerant towards the anime i rated a 4 (Shingetsutan Tsukihime), due it being an adaptation of a Visual Novel, which i'm a big fan of.

Same can't be said about the anime i rated a 3 (Brynhildr in the Darkness), somehow out of all the hundred anime's i watched, Brynhilder managed to do one thing that no anime has ever done to me, hatred. I hated this anime so much, in fact it was the worse anime i have ever seen (for now). There's lots of reasons why i hated it, but there is a review done by TheNeko on this site, who basically shares the same opinions as me. But man this anime is so ass, I bet some random hentai anime has a better plot than this. 💀

I won't be surprised that if you watched it, you probably wouldn't get why I despise it so much. After all a ton of people like this anime, which i'm pretty fine with. Plus technically it's not the worst thing in the world, it just....wasn't for me.

The real question is...I did I dropped it? Nah, I completed that shit through and through. For a bit of context, I don't drop shows at all. No matter how shitty they are, I will 100% complete them and before you ask about the anime's i did drop on my profile. Back then i wasn't really much of a weeb yet, so it was easy for me to drop them if i lose interest, in fact i have waaaaaaaaay more drop shows than I listed on my profile. However, i do plan to rewatch them and give them a second chance.

As for Brynhilder, I could've drop it, but like i mentioned earlier, i don't play by that rule. Plus i was a little curious how it would end, so I continued watching it.....the ending was mid. Was it worth it? Hell no. But I'm kinda glad i watched it. Since I always wondered, if eventually i'll watch a series so bad, it should have stayed in the dumpster. For now Brynhilder shall remind as the worse anime i have ever watched....till the next anime comes around and dethrones its spot as the worst thing ever.

That's all i have really, well i mean I could've dropped a long ass paragraph here, but i doubt anyone would really care. Also I'm fricking tired and i wanna get some snooze after this post. While I ain't sure if my opinion was satisfying or not, but if you have any questions I'll be glad to answer them. But remember i'm a simple guy that enjoys watching anime, expect for stuff I consider trash. So i'll await your next reply, fellow weeb.

The description next to the numbers work well enough for me - this is why I have rated only 5 titles with 10 - a masterpiece is really rare. And since I am quite selective with what I watch, I have only one title marked as 3 - really bad.

Something that works well for me is to set the baseline for anime that I really enjoyed at 7. That way I have enough room for anime that feel particularly exceptional while still being far enough away from being a "Bad" score.

My general idea behind ratings is to compare anime with each other and ask myself if I prefer one of them significantly more than the other until I can settle on a score. This is something I mostly do by intuition and by relying on my (good?) memory about my watching experiences. It's arguably an extremely vague system, but any of my attempts to create clear rules to quantify how much I "prefer" a given anime failed at some point.
For the score distribution I aim for some sort of bell curve. If there are huge irregularities in the curve it usually means that I'm doing something wrong.

My profile has a description of my own rating system. But different people have different ways to rate stuff, so follow your own instinct and give a score. If you enjoy almost everything, then go for 9 or 10 out of 10 no problem. If you hate something, then go for 6 or below. One of my younger sibling loved everything he watches so far and gave 10/10 for all of them lol (could be western animations, movies, or anime). Pretty sure he might become more picky as he gets older, which could be another thing for you. You might rate stuff differently as the years go by, so maybe reassess your own rating system after a few years.

I once tried to make a well defined system but I don't think it really resonates with the process happens inside my head while reducing hours long content into a mere number. This is the most accurate approximation of my thought process:

SUPER SUBJECTIVE SCORING SYSTEM

I often changed my numbers to fit new inclusions with the pre-existing numbers.

It's just more of an instinctual thing I'd say. Even I face similar problems many times. I would say that you should try to set a bar (standard score) that you would usually give to every anime from the first episode. Usually for me, it is a 6 or 7. Then depending on how things go, you can increase/decrease the score.

my ratings are purely based on personal enjoyment, which I think is perfectly valid as a review score. no one here is a professional critic, and with how big the community is, the average should work well as a "how likely is the average person to enjoy this?" sorta barometer.

10: literally the best thing ever. it's perfect and cannot be improved upon.
9: almost perfect. is it as good as my favorite show ever? then it cannot be a 10.
8: pretty damn good. would recommend it to anyone who likes anime.
7: good enough. fans of the genre will enjoy.
6: okay. can be entertaining for those who are really into that genre.
5: bland, boring and forgettable, but may have some enjoyable bits. only for absolute hardcore fans of the genre.
4: bad. I don't regret watching it, but I did not have a great time doing so.
3: really bad. I regret watching this.
2: I'm personally offended by how bad this is.
1: this deserves to be wiped from existence.

it's rare for me to give less than a 4. most of the stuff that is at the bottom of my list is from my "I'll watch anything that looks remotely interesting start to finish, no matter what" days.

honestly, the out-of-ten system is not great. everyone interprets the scale differently, and some people completely ignore the scale and just rate things they liked a 10 and things they didn't like a 1. I think a 4 star or 5 star system still gives enough flexibility without things getting too granular to be useful.

I click on the rating menu and move down until I find a word/phrase ("masterpiece", "great", etc.) I could defend if I used it to a friend when describing the anime. It's a gut reaction most of the time. Sometimes I come back and change a rating if I find that I'm still thinking about the work a couple of weeks later.

I try to only rate anime I've finished or manga I've read half a dozen volumes of, so I don't usually give anything 4 or less because I don't finish things I'm not enjoying when there's so much else to try instead.

My ratings are pretty simple. My 9's and 10's tend to be really good and have emotionally impacted me in some way.

8's are great but don't have that "Personal spark"

7's are perfectly average, good series that lack serious flaws but also lack said oomph factor

6 is my "just average"

5-4 means the show had some good but it's flaws outweigh it.

3 is bad, but not bad or trashy enough to be garbage.

2 is mostly just weird and stupid bullshit like Shitcom and Puzzle of Autumn. One made me puke, the other almost gave me a seizure

1 is reserved for the worst anime ever. Abunai Sisters
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

@MechaFanBoy1979 I enjoyed reading your opinion and I'm kinda curious of this anime you hated so much haha,

I think I have never watched something that I considered bad but I do drop anime bc I lost interest or it wasn't for me.
I usually drop ecchi or harem bc im like why, why I'm watching something that I don't really care about only because the summary was a little interesting and if it doesn't have a lot of nudity or is reasonable, like the characters are a couple or something then I don't care a lot.

For some reason I like watching generic isekai anime, it's entertaining the world and abilities they create, plus it's not too complex so I can watch casually but sometimes I do look for deeper lore animes

Maybe i should rewatch some dropped anime and see if it was really that bad haha
