Sony should learn form Disney's mistakes.
Buying profitable IP owners like Marvel and Lucas Film, doesn't mean those are easy to milk...in fact when mismanaged this can be the road to bankruptcy.

Wait, does this apply to Kadokawa Group as a whole or just the anime/gaming section? Kadokawa owns BookWalker, does this mean Sony will own BookWalker as well? Are all my LN purchases screwed!? I mean CR buys Funimation and suddenly ppl are losing access to their purchases... Who says the same cannot happen with Sony...

What abt their publishing itself (manga & LN)? Will it be owned by F*ing Sony as well?

I'm sorry, but I don't really care for the anime & gaming sections, I'm much more concerned abt the manga & LN side instead....

@uncleqrow This purchase applies to everything Kadokawa owns, meaning all anime and software and subsidiaries (every publishing branch included).

Gushing over magical girls season 2 is probably dead now it this goes through and there's no reason to believe it won't. Everything that can go wrong this year has and continues to worsen. Doujin scene is definitely fucked.

@Katou81 can't take all the shows we had so far. It'll be like in the vidya industry, people will only buy good stuff that slips through the cracks or is thematically appropriate while all the forced titles will flop.

I was worried that my opinion might be too controversial, but it seems that literally everyone-else on this thread agrees with me. Mind you, I doubt this will have much, if any, affect on censorship, but I still don't think a corrupt company like Sony should have this much of a monopoly on the industry. I'd rather it just stuck with Kadokawa. Either way, I wouldn't be too worried TBH. Considering just how lucrative I imagine Kadokawa's output is, I lowkey doubt that Sony even have enough money for Kadokawa to accept the buyout TBH, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I don't like Kadokawa and its practices but the sonyfication of kadokawa will turn the sour cheese rancid and we all know how great monopolies go for any industry.

and why is it a wrong concern? Censorship doesn't just apply to ecchi and woke content but also to creative freedom in general, Disney doesn't just restrict "anti-woke" content but also content that it deems too radical or inappropriate in its animated movies. Also, the bigger the corporation, the lesser the risks it's willing to take with its products so you will see fewer new ideas and more generic run-of-the-mill shows

Giant blobs keep merging together, it's vaguely sickening... Must watch more Kadokawa anime to wash it down. /s

There must be armies of lawyers poring over this as we speak, but I wonder what the Japanese government has to say about this acquisition. The fact that Kadokawa already exists and seems to just be everywhere doesn't give me hope...

Its absolutely insane how little governments do to step in when these giant monopolies are just clearly forming and it is always just bad for the consumer in the end. I am really against all this consolidation on principle and Sony is gaining WAYYY too much power considering they created ANIPLEX and have also owned Crunchyroll since 2021 and FUNimation since 2017. Anti-trust is pretty much dead in current day and all competition is drying up in so many industries yet nothing is ever done about it. This is just another victim of the late stage capitalist hell in the Japanese animation industry and its depressing to see
This post is brought to you by your local transfem gamer goblin. Will not tolerate bigotry and will fight against "anti-woke" sentiment to make the anime community a safer place.

Unless they also own Sentai Filmworks' parent company, AMC Networks (which they don't seem to) they wouldn't quite hold a monopoly in anime streaming and licensing just yet.

But owning Kadokawa would mean owning all of the series that Sentai licenses that are worth anything at all (like No Game No Life), so they could presumably give the licensing for those works to Crunchyroll, which they do own.

So they're definitely getting closer to becoming a monopoly. Not a huge fan of that, but if we end up getting No Game No Life season 2 out of it then I can't complain too much.

Oh boy, here's to another studio not being able to have freedom of what shows they get to be in charge of. And people do have a right to be concerned about censorship since it's modern Sony we're talking about here. Look at a number of shows Kadokawa has a big part in and it's rather worrying what Sony would do with the acquisition.
@animegamer245 Don't forget the double standard Sony has to new Japanese games, many Western games get to have full nudity or sex scene, but Japanese games get hit with censored CG scenes or modified costumes. (some VN's on PS4/5 have light censors on swimsuit scenes, not joking)

"Censorship and Western crap" and it's literally the company that made ecchi anime like Eromanga Sensei and My Dress-Up Darling.
Also you literally have anime produced by Sony on your favs, as well as a Sony owned studio in your fav companies...

Why would it be dead? Why there's no reason to believe it won't?

Considering the shows they helped produce in the past, I fail to see why they would kill an entire anime project...

Tropisch said:

What censorship?
I didn't see any censorship on MDUD.
Also Kadokawa is not a studio, they are a producer, so if any company is not giving studios the freedom of what shows they are in charge in, it's Kadokawa who is pushing their anime studios with their 40 anime a year plan.

the problem is that people see a couple of obscure anime-style games (usually hentai visual novels) getting censored on Playstation, and they assume it means that Sony is a bunch of puritans who are scared of sexual content and are gonna censor all of the anime.

There are reasons to be concerned about Sony trying to monopolize anime streaming/distribution/licensing, but censorship really isn't as high among them as users of this forum, and anime fans in general, make it out to be.

@ShatteredSans I would say that with Sony you can definitely forget about a second season of NGNL... imagine if the minds behind Concord would start dealing with a story of incest between brothers with all that mild nudity lmao

I remember the times when Mars of Destruction was considered the worst anime in existense.
Today's anime already has 50% of titles at Mars of Destruction level.
Do you say that now 90% of anime will be Mars of Destruction?
Not a big deal. Older shows will get more attention then.

@Dije "the minds behind Concord" won't have anything to do with operating Kadokawa.

Sony is not some small group where the same 4 or 5 people are involved in literally everything they do, it's a massive corporation that deals in multiple different industries.

Every big company wants to hold a monopoly over their respective industries. As always, the consumer is the one who gets fucked over. Start saving the anime, manga, games, and LNs you like. Make sure you have backups of all of it.

You realize they've made Western games get edited too right? Doki Doki Literature Club Plus had to
on PlayStation due to their policies. I think its generally just an art style thing as they seem to be more ok with sexual content and extreme violence when the art style is realistic rather than cartoony as 99% of the games that are edited on PlayStation have a more animated art style with the exception of like Devil May Cry V Special Edition. They also don't seem to be doing it as much as these days so you should worry less about censorship and more about the anti-consumer nature of all these mergers and how it hinders competition and innovation in these industries

and with Japan's rapidly declining birthrate and unsustainable cultural practices, their industries are only gonna get more and more desperate meaning more and more dumb business decisions made by old men who don't know whats going on anymore or how to fix anything

so yea, people who aren't scared for manga/anime just don't give a shit

@LSSJ_Gaming it's also probably worth noting that Sony has owned Crunchyroll for the past couple of years, and anime on Crunchyroll is no more censored now than it was before Sony acquired the company.

They're not nearly as obsessed with censorship as everyone seems to think they are. The problem is less about censorship, and more that Sony is getting closer to monopolizing the anime industry, and no single company should hold that much power over any industry.

I'm not really convinced of the concerns of so many anime fans who consume thousands of titles of endless isekai repeats and generic harem and fantasy fluff and see nothing but brilliance before their eyes; are now whining about this. If anything it will only solidify the consolidation within the industry and guarantee more sameness in the output; which is exactly what everyone actually wants, but can't say so.

So basically this is a big win for the mindless consumer, bad news for anyone who wants to publish anything unique ever again.

@joemaamah Who do you think ACTUALLY pulled the plug on the comments & reviews on Crunchyroll? It wasn't the Mods, they could just delete bothersome comments, posts & whatever. Someone in Sony made that decision. Now Crunchy is just a sterile streaming service with the fun sucked out of it.
Sony just cares about advertising over there, were most of us with elite accounts don't even see the blasted adds anymore. Believe me, Sony can screw this up. This has been happening in the US for years. It's why small business almost always fails. Everything is devoured by megacorps. Ever since Reagen removed restrictions on business practices, no start up has really stood a chance unless you let yourself be bought out. And the effects are seldom positive in the long run.
