Character explaining their own power to opponent is stupid, why do they do that?

I don't know what many anime characters were thinking, they casually explain their own power to their opponent in detail. They don't look cool at all, they look stupid.

Why do they do that? To inform the audience/readers? There are some other ways already like using narrative (HxH's) or having the character's ally explaining the power (like Speedwagon) instead for example

Imagine you have some special power and there is someone in front of you trying to kill you, would you kindly explain your own power to them so they have even easier time to send you to your grave?

I guess informing the audience/readers is indeed the reason why they do so.

Because 'Explaining Your Power to the Enemy' is a popular anime trope meant to explain the power to the reader/viewer without resorting to narration.

jujutsu kaisen made this a plot like saying the details of your powers make them much more stronger or your conviction to that power becomes much more powerful especially binding vows

Maybe if their power is cooking they explain it because they want the other guy to write down their favourite recipes.

Why?

Because otherwise a large part of the audience would cry "What's going on?" or "The power system doesn't make sense!"

There are better ways to do it, as you said. Maybe the author is just lazy or doesn't want to use a narrator.

It's to let the viewer know how their convoluted bullshit works. When their power is super easy to understand, it is more annoying though. My head canon is that they do it so they don't forget how their own power works.

As a Homura/Kurumi simp...

In Chained Soldier...

Azuma Yachiho telling what shes gonna do every time she uses her powers is very annoying!!!

Man!!!

The visuals & what is shown in the screen will already tell the audience on what she will do!!!

Rewind time!!!

They dont need to tell us!!!

EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!

SMH!!!

The series that does that are usually Shonen/Shoujo and because it's aimed primarily at teenagers it's to help them understand the whole thing though it don't prevent debate. You can take the seinen/Josei example in comparatif and you that sort of exposition dropping for more a show don't tell though not 100% of the time. All your example are primarily series written for people 12-18 years old so it make sense to help them understand what they watch/read.

Not just powers.. often characters [in anime, and other visual entertainment media] tend to elaborately divulge their brilliancy of a plan, only for it to be thwarted minutes later [which again has a elaborate reveal by the opposite character].. I think that's just for content and audience explanation, so the peeps are on the right track of understanding of what's going on..

It is dumb and used for audience explanation purposes but you could think of it like they're so confident it's stronger that there's no comeback the hero could possibly have

In most of titles:
Why? - Because somehow audience needs a clear explanation of what's happening from A to Z. [Even tho it is not needed]
Also the ally explaining is as mundane/annoying as explaining to an opponent.

But JJK has made their own way to provide this system as in JJK explaining the power to enemy make your powers/techniques stronger, or something like that. I don't remember how exactly it went as it was explained in S1.

I'd rather have no explanation and just seeing how the character fighting make an inner thought monologue process trying to figure out the opponents ability, after all in a real duel like in Fencing or HEMA the majority of the fight is in positioning and preparation not the actual fight, same for Chess.

It is a Japanese Samurai thing. Back in the Edo era boosting about how strong you are to your opponent would be ideal to actually fighting as that way he would just give up and you both get to go home in one piece.

  • Because powers and magical battles are not the goal. They are means to an end. And sometimes, the end is better achieved by having your enemies listen to your rant for 10 minutes. Maybe they would even agree to become your allies in the end. Or maybe your current allies will use that time to kidnap the princess or whatever it is that kids do these days.
  • Because talking about your powers is the goal. Increasing popularity of your school of magic is what you're here for. Winning the tournament is just a side effect of your school of magic being the best, not the goal.
  • Because you are lonely, and most people wouldn't voluntarily listen to your explanation of your powers even if they were your friends. It's always nice to have an audience that can't run away. Even if you will have to kill them afterwards to protect your secrets.
  • Because after all your lengthy villain career, your sanity is starting to erode. Of course, going crazy may have been what made you become a villain in the first place.
  • Because you want to divert their attention from an obvious weakness of your powers by exaggerating its effectiveness.

Boasting their own power and explaining it to the audience I guess, which is absolutely stupid and a terrible trope of storytelling.

@Luchipher-Zen You just know that when a character says:"Okay, here's the plan." and then it cuts away that the plan will work

So the audience gets an understanding of what is going on and it stalls for time. It often is meant as a show of arrogance too though, like they think they might as well inform them of exactly how they are going to get their ass beat to six feet under.

Because at the end of the day its a show and they need to give the information to us audience. Better expose it than leave them wondering what is their power. It's for convenience more than anything.

It is poor writing. Basically, the writers want to give the audience the exposition but don't know how to do it intelligently or are targeting an audience that need the exposition. For example, if your audience is children or young teens, it maybe easier for characters to explain their power by blurting it out.

TL;DR - stupid audience or stupid writers.

Yeah like many have stated it's just a way to explain to the audience what's happening. Whether that's the right way to do it is another thing.

JJK comes to mind with this conversation. The way they incorporated the "explain your power so your power gets stronger" idea has a weird feel to it.

I actually vibe with this. I think Bleach was the first anime I'd ever seen do something similar to this and I liked it.

Certain villains do that because they're overconfident in their abilities and feel like gloating. They feel like they have the high ground and won’t lose their fight even if they were to explain to the heroes in detail how their powers work. The other reason why some characters give lengthy explanations about their powers is because the mangaka wants to explain to the readers/audience how that certain character's powers work, and prefers having that character be the explainer.

It is indeed pretty silly and comedic though, and battle shounen tends to do this a lot lol

JJK did that pretty smartly. At least they aren't insulting the audience IQ, unlike in other anime where the mc/villain just reveals their power directly. However, JJK only did that at the surface level, because I don't remember how revealing their techniques really impacted their power. Just can't think of examples.

@Zimmu Isn't that just a roundabout "we acknowledge this is stupid but we're doing it anyway?"

Well I mean, they probably did realize this is pretty stupid because in S2 they just rely on using a narator

In JJK it's because curses are born from negative emotions, so the opponent understanding the curse, makes it more powerful when used against them.

In jojo and baki, as far as I remember most of the time other character figure out the opponent's power and explain it out laud. plus the powers are so absurd that if they didn't explain it no one would have any clue wtf was happening.

In every other case that I can think of, it's lazy writing.

I think it is a way to let the audience know what is happening... or at least that was my main theory

I just recently got into reading mangas and I have a different idea: in manga panels it is difficult to let the audience know exactly what happened, yes they use a lot of visual information but the most efficient way and sometimes the only way to do it without using 4 pages for a single event is to make one character tell the audience what happened. And it works, I was reading Claymore the other day and something happened but I didnt knew what it was, and one of the characters told me and then I knew.

I think this might be a side effect of adapting mangas: the dialogue exists, so you have to adapt it. And for original animes, this might be just a legacy of the mangas that came before the anime was even a thing

of course thats only my idea

It's Always funny to me ,the mc Does a strange attack or vice versa ,then the opponent is like: ''YOURE WONDERING HOW IVE MANAGED TO PENETRATE YOUR DEFENCES ILL BE HAPPY TO EXPLAIN'' and then he goes into a 3 minutes ramble about his power in excruciating detail .Its beyond funny especially how over the top and melodramatic they make it

There are a few instances where it makes sense, and even some cases where knowing about said power not only doesn't give the other side an advantage, but a disadvantage compared to ignoring how it works. The later is the case for the sword carried by the character on my forum set, for example. If you know about the sword's special ability, your team is more screwed than if you don't, and you can't really do a lot about that.

There's also the case where the explanation is actually to trigger some kind of reaction, or to temporise to wait for something, and is merely an excuse, or aiming at something hidden. It's rare, but some smarter characters actually do that.

For everyone else though, yeah it's pretty dumb. Especially those who don't even have enough advantage in said fight to begin with to be sure of winning it, why would you give yourself a disadvantage.

We have instances where the narrator explains the power and we have instances where the character's inner thoughts explains the power but a lot of people complain about that as well.

These characters most of the time egoists and think they will beat their opponents easily so they dont see any drawback of explaing all their powers.
