Wanted to hear other opinions on long manga as I recently realized I kinda stay away from them. I find manga that have 200 chapters or more long. Obviously I seen manga that have this amount of chapters but looking back on it im surprised I was able to even do it. But they do take 1-2 weeks for me to finish but "Medaka Box" took me a month to complete lol.

I don't have much of a specific opinion towards long manga, I see them the same way as other manga except they just take more time to complete. My longest completed manga is Shikimori and I think that took me a week or so to complete.

I think long manga are good for manga that is character-driven or have lots of characters - it gets me attached to them over the course of the manga. I tend to avoid them as well though since I predict that it's gonna take me so long to finish and I'm a bit impatient lol.

I find no issues in reading 1,000 chapter manga and taking more than 1 year to not even get halfway lol haha. Chapter amount doesn't matter to me, however chapter length is more of a scare for me. I can't handle manga that I need to read for 40 minutes for only 1 chapter due to my relatively short attention span.

Long-running manga tend to drag for way too long for the sake of milking the series, while shorter series seem more appealing to me because of their rereadability and less commitment. I'm still not sure whether I should keep reading Case Closed Manga or just cross it off my list.

Long manga can feel like a never-ending journey sometimes. Shorter ones, on the other hand, tend to be more digestible and still deliver a solid story.

Depend on the length I don't consider anything long if it's not pass 500 chapters anything under that is manageable especially if it's a series from a Shonen or shoujo magazine.

I am a guy who has a hard time finishing even small length manga because I jump on to a new manga almost every other day. Thats why I think a lot before starting a long manga.

A really long manga like something above 60 chapters usually take me two months to finish. I just checked my completed manga list for that information. I am not a slow reader, but i have a consantration problem. I can't read for a very long time. So shorter the manga, better for me. Something like a 700 chapters or something takes alot of time for me to finish, so i really hasitate to start such a long manga. It is not like i don't like long manga though.

Slow burns are always a loved feature of mine, though they have to remain to-the-point for me to love them. Some filler here or there for fun character interactions and such is okay, but entire filler arcs are a done deal.

I prefer shorter, more condensed series, that actually tell a decent story without dragging it for too long. I appreciate authors knowing when to finish their works, to avoid them becoming dragged out for the sake of milking the series as much as it's possible, without caring about the overall quality. Most of shorter series (either short manga, or just mange without several hundreds chapters) are just like this, so I definitely prefer them to longer ones. There are some exceptions, of course. Dragon Ball manga, one of the best I've ever read, consists of over 500 chapters. But in general, I disliked manga with too many chapters.

i feel what @RaviDavi said. i fear a 100 chapter manga/novel with 50+ pages per chapter which happens to be dialogue heavy over one piece wherein the chapters are relatively small, despite the 100 chapters it'd probably ultimately take the same time to read lol
-

although i'm kind of weird on it, because i avoid long anime like the plague but manga length doesn't bother me at all. i'll see a manga that's 1k chapters and think "another one for the list hell yeah, it'll just take a bit longer than normal" but if i see a anime with more than 100 episodes i'm out most of the time, i actually opt sometimes to reading the manga of series that have longish animes instead. like Bleach as an example.

I think it's just a preference thing where i can sit through hours of reading more easily than hours of staring at a screen and reading subtitles, there's more engagement in scrolling/flipping pages on top of being quick at reading so i can go at a better own pace with it

@RaviDavi its amazing that you can read a 1000 chapter manga over the course of one year, I try to finish the manga fast as possible or il just forget stuff in it or never pick it up again lmfao. I haven't come across a chapter that took me 40 minutes to read longest would be 10 so I never had that problem.

@Adnash Said it perfect but probably cause of my attention span I can't read 700 chapters. Maybe if it was amazing and life changing I can read more but every manga I come across with 200+ chapters or around that always has a part that ruins the entire story for me.

Love them. Most of my favourite manga are usually long.

Obviously, length isn't a sign of quality but longer manga tend to get you more invested into the world and characters, something shorter manga can struggle with. A manga with a lot of chapters can also be a sign of an author dragging things out a little too much, so it always depends on the manga in question.

Personally, I like manga that have about 20 volumes. If the last story is interesting when I read it, I feel very satisfied after reading it. However, if the final story is not interesting, I sometimes feel as if I have wasted my time. Also, there are some works that I am waiting for the rest of the story, hoping that it will not be unfinished due to the author's death.

I think I can read quite a few or a small number of books in a day because I can read sports manga and other manga quite fast.

I don't pay much attention to the number of chapters I read, but I do wonder how much I'm reading each month.…

Honestly if you've got the time and the story interests you enough, I think they are pretty easy to keep up with. One Piece being a key example for me personally. Even though back when I first started reading it I never thought I would still be doing it almost 30 years later. The story is just that engrossing. 😳

I don't have any issues with reading long manga, most of my favorites are over 100+ chapters long and two of them are 500+ chapters long. If I really get into it like with those two favorites, it takes me ~2 weeks to read 500 chapters. I think I actually have a problem with reading manga that are too short; I've rarely read manga less than 50 chapters long that I've really enjoyed. For me, my favorites tend to be ones with a likeable cast in which the entire story, characters, and setting can be fully fleshed out. I find shorter manga usually aren't able to do that very well and are just a 7/10, at the very most. Though of course, the opposite can happen in which long manga are dragged out longer than necessary. I've also rarely read long manga that have a solid last arc/ending. A double-edged sword, I suppose.

Long manga are a commitment, but they can be very rewarding if the story is well-written and you have the patience to see it through. That said, not everyone has the time or attention span for long series, so it can be tough to recommend them to everyone.

Honestly, I don't like long manga. Anything more than 12 volumes is long for me. This is the biggest reason I still haven't picked up Akatsuki no Yona despite loving the anime. I get very little free time and I don't want to dedicate it to one manga if it's going to take me a 6+ months to a year or more to catch up to the latest chapter.

I don't really care about length of manga. I think once you read really long manga, like 500+ chapters you no longer care about how many chapters manga has.
Longer manga have more time to tell story explore characters and world. But sometimes they tend to drag on and get boring or lost focus. If you have enough time they can be really good and worth the time. Recently I find manga with around 150-200 chapters quite enjoyable and fun.
But how much chapters does manga need to have to be considered long? Depends on person. Read whatever makes you happy.

I don't really care about the length as much as I care about the quality of the story. For example Kimi no Iru Machi has 270 chapters, and it was so insufferable that I had to drop it after 70 chapters. However, I binged read over 770 chapters of Kingdom in a week because it's just that good. I feel if you find a story that you enjoy then it's length doesn't matter as long as the story maintains it's quality.

I prefer longer serials, it just feels more complete and I don't need to wait for release if I enjoy reading them.
On the other hand, there are some serials that take advantage of poor pacing to mass release and end up with 300+ chapters of garbage
So there's a middle ground to be safe from that

If you want art, short manga. There's nothing long manga can do that's worth the time commitment. There are a few exceptions, like Naussica (which I've never read BTW), but generally long series are just padded because that's how the incentives work in the manga industry. Of the benefits ... long-series can flesh out lore, flesh out characters, and contrast a status quo with a multi-season background plot to protect it. The former isn't of much importance in the grand scheme of things, the second can easily be done concisely, and the latter just doesn't matter to me.

If you want entertainment, long manga. I'm reading an Isekai web novel and it's fun that I can come back to it every day and never run out of content.

The best way to find a manga you're reading to be long is to check the forums and find a chapter conversation which is 300 chapter more than what you've read. It's a real pain to see if you're buying the manga like I am and it's just mediocre.
Quite a few of those I read should be shorter than what they are. Or could have ended a while back.

Long or short series have no impact on me picking up to read. It is like any other series that I read. If it is long, that means I will need more time to complete. The number of chapters or length of the series is also not in the consideration to determine the manga I choose. So I'm pretty fine with any series - long or short - as long as the series is able to entertain me.

I am currently reading Kingdom. The latest chapter is almost reaching 800 chapters and I have only recently picked up this series from my long list of PTR. So I am very far behind to the current chapter but I'm gradually and slowly getting there. The other series like One Piece and Detective Conan for example, are those super-long series with over 1000+ chapters, and they are still ongoing.

Come to think of it, there are actually some issues that may influence us, readers, and one example will be the death of the author(s) or a series goes on hiatus for whatever reasons (eg. author falls sick, not motivated to work). In the case of the author's demise, the series will be forced to discontinue, hence the story has no ending. Has anyone read Berserk, or Hunter x Hunter?

It depends on the type of story it is. If it has a story to tell, then I do not mind long stories, but if it's like a romance focused story, and it just goes on and on forever like Nisekoi, then I have a problem with it. Skip Beat is a good example of a long romance manga that works, because they actually have a story to tell, not just endless beating around the bush. There are a lot of romance manga, specifically shonen romance manga that tends to drag forever.

they're like manga, but long

but actually, you have to set your expectations accordingly, more often than not, super long mangas often are made to create a community or fandom surrounding that piece of work, and it's integral to really understand that and even interact with it to really enjoy it. I think the best example of this has to be haikyuu, in my personal experience going to conventions and meeting people, haikyuu is less about the plot itself and more about the culture

This is a good example on how to actually interpret MAL scores. Bias is inherent in our human existence, there is no such thing as an objective qualification of art, all the ratings in MAL are biased one way or the other, this is specially important in works with fandoms, if you're reading the new chapters at the time they release, you talk about it with your friends, you go into social media and maybe see fanart or edits of manga, you're going to end up rating the manga higher because of all positive experiences you had interacting with the community, so yeah, it's important to know what you're getting into before reading one

I prefer long manga, but only if it makes sense to be long. Dragging out 200+ chapters on a story that could've been completed in 50 is a sure way for me to lose interest in reading it (I will still finish it regardless, but I would probably be less enthusiatic in doing so). Either way, good mangas are the ones that don't make you feel that it's long and that, by the end of it, leaves you wanting to read more.

It's the only requirement I have. In these ones, the mangakas are able to develop the whole plot at their own pace, thus the story feels coherence. You don't want to read a manga where the author is desperate to finish it, in those cases the development does not make sense and everything feel rushed. Marry Grave it's a good example. TL DR: the longer, the better.
