Is it possible to appeal to that non-anime audience, collect profits, and use that money to generate quality content for genuine anime fans?

Maybe it sounds too wacky.

i'd rather they made what they wanted, resulting in a wide, diverse array of anime being produced, than pander to any group specifically. That said, if they are going to pander, then yes, please pander to someone other than shut in neets, please. Non-anime fans seem to have higher standards and seem to get bored of dry, generic, cut and paste shows quicker than anime fans.

No. Ideally they should solely pander to me but since that's not possible, I want them to do the closest thing to that which is pandering to Otakus.

It should do exactly the opposite, actually. An honest industry thrives on symbiotic mutualism with its real fans who love its franchises and who buy the merchandise, and thus wouldn't benefit from shafting them to concede to a minority of virtue signalling foreigners who care more about trying to police the medium than they do expressing any sort of passion or genuine interest for anything.

No, I am of the belief that media should exist, and then get popular.

The moment you do anything BECAUSE you want it to be popular, it will start loosing it's value.

That's why It always annoys me when safer projects like demon slayer get super mainstream. because it invites others to do the same.

Love or hate them, more weirder popular shows like:

Chainsaw man, Evangelion, death parade or made in abyss, are the shows keeping the none-safe part of the anime community alive.

"pander to those who don't like anime instead"

That would be a weird business model. The media could try to lure audience outside of the main fandom with some side projects, but the main effort would be towards the low hanging fruit, otherwise it wouldn't be sustainable policy for the industry.

No, the anime that do the things that only anime can do are the most valuable. Anime that "don't feel like anime" are fine too, both kinds can exist at the same time.

I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Objectively if the aim is to make money or become more popular then anime should expand to reach a larger audience which may or may not include abandonning otaku.

Personally, I dont really care if new people start to like anime as long as they enjoy it for what it is and don't try to force change upon it. I wouldn't want anime to become like western television or film because I prefer anime to those things. I suppose in that regard, I'd rather that anime panders to otaku and continues to do the weird stuff and tropes it has always done. Obviously if you make everything the exact same it will eventually get stale, but anime should evolve in its own way rather than becoming more like other media.

Won't that seem counterproductive? The anime industry is pretty big as is and outright abandoning it for the sake of attracting an audience that doesn't like anime would be a suicidal move. Besides, many people I know who dislike anime REALLY dislike anime (almost like an allergic reaction), so I doubt pandering to them would bring any positive results.

No. They decided to do that in the mid-2010s, and it caused anime to take a freefall in quality. It didn't start to recover until recently, as this year has been the best for anime since about 2016. They recovered by abandoning Western influence, and now you see those tourists who came into the fandom from late 2016-2022 all bashing anime with the same insults they used on us in the past. That prove that anime's gatekeeping is working, which is good.

ideally, the priority should just be making good crap, marketability be damned, but writers and animators gotta eat. studios pander to certain demographics because honing in on a niche can net more loyal fanbases of people who will keep up with/buy merch for a specific franchise long-term. its easy to understand why one would think appealing to nerds will get more eyeballs on their work just based on the sheer GIRTH of the anime community, but pandering to weebs for no other reason than to pander is just a bad time for everyone.

considering that though, anime in general can always be considered "pandery" to otakus on a fundamental level because the existence of otakus is solely dependent on it: no anime = no otakus. im also slightly ticked off by the presence of an "otaku culture" tag here on mal, because what's considered otaku pandering in america is more equivalent to pop culture references over there, which american media also has. here, we just call things like the big bang theory annoying and leave it at that. just because the references made in certain shows are more obscure or frequent compared to others, that shouldn't constitute a whole subgenre. many anime under the otaku culture label would fit just as well under parody

Most the people into the really generic isekai with an OP MC and nothing particularly unique or charming about the characters are usually new to anime who just have nothing to compare to or just are watching to have a range of experience having something not good to watch to make good stuff more special feeling.

Complete shot in the dark since I haven't seen Pluto, but it's an Urasawa series and those tend to market themselves to normies.

Great Pretender, OTOH, has the look of a typical anime but is basically an American heist movie.

Let's start with the fact that "otaku pandering" is a misconception, since in Japan anime is a much more mainstream media format, it doesn't need to target otaku directly. On the contrary, most shows try to attract diverse and ordinary people. Like most Japanese media, for example, in Japan doramas are considered to be regular TV dramas and not the exotic idol dramas found outside of East Asia. Secondly, I don’t think that anime or any media at all should adopt the Western trend of artificially changing or restructuring the audience. Not only does this not work and deprive you of your original audience, but it also negatively affects the brand, which destroys all its connections with the original fanbase.
