Ren always feels like one of those characters who isn't sure about their goals. But seeing him again in this season...and attacking Naomfui's party like that is a surprise.

The way he has that mask on not only changes his appearance but personality too. We do see a bit of his background story and tragic moments though. Seems Ren did go through some rough times from behind the scenes yikes. It's a good thing that Naofumi has his party and is also healthy to deal with him.

Myne didn't keep decieving Ren for too long thankfully.

Guess Naofumi is gonna keep collecting heroes like Pokemon and making them actually useful now lol. I like it. Itsuki is next.

Ooooh, it's nice seeing some backstory of Ren's life in Japan. Hope they do this with the other heroes.

The swordsman, Ren, once overlapped the game he played with this world, and as a result of acting with a gaming mindset, he brought about a tragedy. Despite losing everything, he still holds onto an unyielding wish. Seeking even greater power, Ren attacks Naofumi and Motoyasu, but this time, Ren manages to inflict harm on Naofumi with a technique akin to Shield of Wrath's Iron Maiden. Raphtalia, alerted by Raph-chan, rushes to the scene to lend assistance.

So do all the Cardinal Heroes possess weapons infused with Cursed Series, or is it exclusive to Naofumi? It seems that some, like Ren, can even have multiple types in a single weapon, as evidenced by his Greed and Gluttony. Is Motoyasu's spear from this episode also a part of the Cursed Series? Despite Motoyasu's comedic nature this week, he surprisingly managed to eliminate the two adversaries, showcasing an unexpected level of competence when following Naofumi's guidance.

However, he still needs to maintain a respectful distance from Filo.

You're trying to make me feel sympathy for Sword, but it's not working.

Congratulations to Ren on setting a new record for the "Betrayed by Bitch Any%" speedrun. Even Naofumi got a whole day of training with her in the party.
Very nice to see Eclair face off against Ren. I'm told that Season 2 skipped the arc where they fought for the first time. Even with all his experience and Curse powers, Sword is still a glorified jobber.
Rest in pieces, Trash 3 and Trash 4. Pretty sure you only existed to put over clown girl and Motoyasu's Curse Spear.

I'm satisfied with the adaptation of this arc, Fallen Heroes is one of my favorite arcs of the Light Novel and I think the anime did enough.

Ren's backstory and his point of view are something that only receives depth in the anime, as the LN is in first person from Naofumi's point of view, so even for me it was something new.

For this episode, I wish they had given more screen time to the Gluttony Series, showing its strength even though the result in the end is the same. Motoyasu's Lust Series as well, as he doesn't use Temptation here.

And I think the part about the assassins was quite rushed, like, yes, Motoyasu eliminates them both in an instant in the novel too, but the explanation of why they resurrect and why they couldn't escape this time was lost (the cursed skills of Ren and Motoyasu prevented their souls from leaving the place. Ren actually pollutes the place with curses after using so many cursed skills).

I Dont know why!! But this episode was really satisfying... Maybe because Ren got sucker punched by reality or maybe because we got to see him struggle to reach to a point where he understands that all this time, Naofumi was only looking out for him out of experience with Malty!! Whatever it is, I'm really glad he is back on track and the Spear hero and Sword hero are in same page (kinda) with the shield hero.

For once, I thought I was watching the wrong anime, but nope, it's Ren's life back in Japan when he was a pro-gamer in another game, and thinking that in the current world, he can do the same as well. Oh, how wrong was he.

Same as Motoyasu, when Ren tried to fight against the Spirit Tortoise, he failed spectacularly, and ended up being manipulated the same in the Spear Hero's shoes by Myne. It's no surprise that Naofumi laid waste to Ren's ideals of not seeing the reality that was in front of him, and it did not take until Myne to steal his valuables to ensure that he has to face reality, as such with her cahoots with high-level mages, the same as Naofumi did. Essentially, the Cardinal Heroes are all useless, all except for Naofumi, as enemies chase Ren's back endlessly, with both ordinary people and adventurers mocking him, before he took over a new identity as a masked man.

That's how the Cardinal Heroes have gotten themselves facing against each other with Motoyasu and Ren, who has the Curse series inflicted on himself for greater power, which Naofumi knows all too well. But Ren has gone too deep of being a vagrant bandit, so much for Naofumi and his party to start restricting Ren before all hell broke loose for him. Especially for Eclair, her wanting to duel with Ren is a testament to her strength and skill, forcing Ren to come out of his shell. And at the very least, Ren's Greed and Gluttony Curse in tandem to Naofumi's Wrath, it's like the 7 Deadly Sins, and she forced him out of his curse. While the same assassins came back to fight them, Motoyasu was swift, and his burst of strength taught from Naofumi, indeed made him stronger.

Ren's only choice now would be to commune with Naofumi, Motoyasu and the others so that they can work together, that's the only way if they are to rise up together once again.

Eh that was an OK redemption arc, it's always a good decision to remove Malty from any part of the story

The Spear Hero likes Filo thing is genuinely disturbing, really hope they don't overplay that gag

The insight into Ren's past and his days before his current self sure was insightful. No matter how good of a gamer you are in the field there's always a huge difference between games and reality. Bitch as ever is predictable as always. But i guess we got to saw how Ren broke down and how he came to face the spear hero. If only Ren learned how to master his abilities and created an optimal fighting style as Naofumi did then at least he would had been useful. In the end as a knight who values swordmanship above all else Eclair was the perfect counter to Ren. In the end im glad that they were able to save Ren. With Eclair helping him im sure he can be an asset to the team.

Every change the studio did in S2 came back to bite them in the ass!
- S2 ended with the three heroes stopping the wave, getting medals for their bravery and saving the kingdom. S3 retconned this and everyone hates the three heroes for not helping.
- The reason only Eclair could save Ren is because they started to have a small relationship/history. Because this got cut from S2 Eclair saving him feels random.
- The group getting curse in S2 didn't happen, but they still have it in S3 and affects their performance seriously.
- The agents of the waves have artificial souls and this allows them to revive. During the fight against Kyo Naoufumi's group discovered this and gained the knowledge to stop him. Because this got cut from S2 the soul thing feels random.
- Naofumi recognizes that Ren is using a Curse Series, but doesn't notice that Motoyasu is using one too.
- When the hooded guys die in episode 5 there's no blood, but there's blood in episode 6.

I found it funny how Naofumi notices Ren's Cursed Sword but not Motoyasu's Spear with a sinister aura that was there the entire episode. I think they wanted to preserve the moment to focus on Ren and that's why Motoyasu doesn't use Temptation too.

I think I may have found a plothole in this episode and also in the LN which covers this part. How is Ren able to read Bitch's letter? All the heroes except for Naofumi are not able to read this worlds language. They can only understand the verbally spoken language. So how did he understand her written letter. For the LN, I just assumed he asked someone to read it for him because it wasnt like really specified in the novel which gave it some space for creativity and imagination. Spoiler: He later gets taught how to read this worlds language or at least starts to study it. Are there any other LN reader who also found it strange?

Ren - the typical gamer tryhard who blames everyone else when he fucks up
Motoyasu - The gamer pervert who hits on any female character
Itsuki - The bitch bow player, nuff said

Who the hell picks these heroes? They have so many mental flaws and poor character. Its like they were purposely picked to destroy the world because of how weak they are.

We are 3 seasons in and Bitch still using the exact same tactic to manipulate the heroes, how dumb are they? Shame;less tired old trope. Cmon man....

I'm surprised this wasn't a bad episode. Only thing I would have changed would have been more focus on the action scenes. We got a lot of weird cuts of characters just watching other characters fighting. Like turn the camera around I hear the sword clashing sounds over there.

We got Ren's backstory very isekai-ish but still cool to see. Also Motoyatsu was using his brain by luring out the bandits. WTF dude is hella dangerous when he starts using that. I'm pretty sure he was using the lust series with his spear, it was glowing all purple. It would explain his ridiculous strength.

@Yaggamy I always appreciate when people like you help us anime only watchers with either minor details that were skipped or like with those actual important plot points

I thought Ren was a complete loser but that brief moment before dying showed that deep inside he was a genuine hero and Motoyatsu this episode kicking butt and saving the day for once.

Just like with Naofumi way back in season 1, Ren finds out the hard way in how much of a nasty piece of work Bitch can be, tricking him before disappearing with is equipment. Still, this episode did focus on Ren and what he was like back in his world in being a dedicated gamer, although seeing him spring into action to save the schoolgirls from being stabbed was a brave thing of him to do.

His current state was making him go completely off the rails with how cursed he was, so stopping him was a must, which Eclair did a good job in defeating him and getting through his head with her words. The two goons from the previous episode appeared again, but Motoyasu didn't hesitated in taking the pair down before Raphtalia finished their spirits off in style.

You can easily tell that Motoyasu has the lust curse with how he acts now, especially towards poor Filo, who I can't blame her and Rishia from running away in horror. XD

Overall, I was happy with how this episode wrapped up Ren's issues and I hope that he can take that step needed to redeem himself.

I like that they're finally exploring the other heroes' characters more in-depth, but man they are really struggling with the fight scenes. Season 1's limited animation could be forgiven due to the strong direction of the story but watching the difference of what is said and what the characters feel (ex: the whole battle against ren feeling very underwhelming compared to other, narratively less high-stakes battles like the season1 finale) right now, when the story isn't too sure of where to go is really jarring. It doesn't help that they decided to make every character stay there and commentate while the battle went on, was it like that in the light novels too? I'm invested in the direction the anime is taking and the music and voicework is amazing as always but sadly everything else makes me feel this week's chapter is more of a 6/10. Hope it gets better towards the finale or Kinema Citrus can allocate more resources for next season seeing how the property is so popular in japan :/

The spear hero Motoyatsu actually did something useful for once, he's really going hard to get his father's approval in Naofumi. It's kinda scary. Poor Ren went through the same BS with bitch that lead Ren to tap into his curse series of Greed and Gluttony. Luckily, Ren was able to snap out of it after fighting with Eclair who has now become his partner. Ren was just a typical gamer with no friends in his previous life and got the typical isekai route by dying trying to save someone.

A detail that I hadn't noticed watching the episode the first time:

In the novel, it is stated that Ren died trying to save a childhood friend from a serial killer.

At the beginning of this episode and Ren's flashback, a girl casually talks to Ren, saying that she wanted to play with him. She is almost identical to the girl who is saved by Ren from being stabbed.

Everything indicates that she was his childhood friend, who before was probably trying to help Ren and his antisocial behavior by showing other people how good he was at the game so he could make other friends, but he refuses with an excuse.

Wait I’m just thinking, how was Ren able to read the letter? Since the hero’s can only understand the spoken language. In the books it was kind of glossed over.

Overall they did a really good job with the adaptation in this one. Really love how much they characterised ren who’s come off as a pretentious asshole since first met him. Yes, he has his flaws, but he’s really a good person at heart. Shoutout to eclair for coming in clutch and breaking the hold the curse series had on him.

It seems like all 4 Cardinal Heroes can develop curses, and since there are 7 sins and 4 heroes, I'm guessing each hero can succumb to two sins, except for the Shield Hero, who only had to deal with Wrath. If Ren has Greed and Gluttony, then Motoyasu probably has Pride and Lust, and Itsuki has Sloth and Envy.

I'm also guessing that the Vassal Weapons will play an important role, likely to be connected with the Cardinal Heroes' curses somehow. It looks like Motoyasu will be the next one to deal with his curse, since the purple weapon and red marks on his face and body might be a sign.

I'm also wondering if Bitch's goal is to actually get the heroes to fall for their curses. But why though? Hmm...

Ren forced to accept reality. Suffering from PTSD following the lose of his entire party to the spirit tortoise Ren simply can't handle the truth of what he's done. Leading all those closest to him towards their deaths is a lot of guilt for one person. Ren didn't know which way was up at that point and fell so far he even trusted Bitch of all people. Naofumi as tired of all this extra work trying to get the other heroes to take this next attack seriously. Motoyasu already was a headache and now Ren isn't wanting to cooperate. Ren unlocking his curse series was awesome, Naofumi definitely knows all about that and what it takes go unlock. The curse of Gluttony consuming Ren as he desires all strength in the world. Naofumi almost falling victim to the guillotine skill Ren used. Eclair jumping in to take Ren down, beating him at his own game of sword play. Ren could use a good training partner like her. He's been talked down enough to now maybe he useful in the next big fight.

hasn't this become a little too shallow? Just comparing to season 1, or the hype of the first episodes, for some reason it has fallen flat. It feels so superficial and uninteresting. It lacks seriousness and direction. Maybe it's the fact that the story is not given enough time, once again rushed. Like they keep adding characters they end up not even showing or giving the importance they implied they'd have.

The conflict with ren felt so insignificant, so simple. And it was solved as simply. tomoyasu is just a clown, has been for a while. that whole trying to make him badass killing those 2 guys didn't work out. The cardinal heroes are portrayed as such side characters, such wasted story potential. There don't seem to be any interesting or serious obstacles or antagonist. Is always some typical evil stooges, or for some fucking reason bitch who hasn't died or had a conversion moment. Halfway into the season and I believe just 14 minutes of actual interesting plot: the thing with the 2 white tiger siblings and the king.

I do like they gave a bit of Ren's backstory and POV.

While it does not make his choices much better, it helps give you an idea why he made them. Especially considering these guys are basically teen/young adult weebs living their Isekai dreams.

Motoyasu has got to be the weirdest character I've ever seen. He doesn't have a lot of depth to him but holy shit is he diverse. Every time I think I've got his character figured out they give him a new personality lol I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, but it sure is different.
