Fern packs a lot of firepower with her talent although I'm not too surprised.

Not going to lie, I enjoy watching the relationship dynamics between her and Frieren. It's appealing and both can learn from each other. This show is still on its first arc so they're taking their time exploring the world dealing with unnatural problems. So much potential still for this arc and I'm loving it.

To hear Frieren say that the 10-year-journey is not even 1/100th of her life, that speaks immortality. But when Eisen says that the same 1/100th life has changed her inside out, that speaks humanity.

As Fern sees Heiter off, both her and Frieren are on the journey to Ende, their first stop: into the Wille region, where townsfolk report of missing people on th way to the mountain pass, seeing undead ghosts to be precise, be it loved ones or those once endeared. But these undead are controlled by magic, which is most likely illusion magic. This, which Einsam controls that have no effect on mages, though they have encountered beings like it. Into the fog where the same illusion magic does its effect to show phantoms of the dead, Fern sees Heiter come before her very eyes, which is screened through her memory, and the same is done for Frieren through for Himmel, which they did tackle Einsam on the mountain pass.

The Riegel Canyon where a solar dragon is spotted, as well as a grimoire in its nest, Fern tries to attack it, though it does no effect at all. Heh, Frieren just dumped Fern into the action and commended her on her actions. They need a companion, and Eisen recommends his warrior apprentice of Stark, though they need not find him far from the nearby village thanks to the old woman looking for them. The same solar dragon once attacked their small town, which he defended against, and thanks to his defence that the village hasn't seen any attacks ever since. Of course, Stark knows that Frieren and Fern are sent his way thanks to Eisen, but he needs help defeating it.

The problem is: Stark was just a wuss and was brandished and idolized being a hero for not doing anything, he's a hopeless boy who has the weight of the village on his shoulders, haha. He is given a day to work things out, but just like Eisen, he was a coward whom his village was rampaged by demons, and that Eisen drilled his skills into him, being a warrior whom the people can depend on him for.

With Stark's training, will he able to overcome the solar dragon? A great introduction to the red-haired warrior kid!

Yes, that journey with the hero-party might not have even accounted to one-hundredth of Frieren’s life, but that was something beyond that, she did get years worth of memories out of them after all, which she even looks back on every now and then. Though this time, the journey to the demon continent is for a special purpose, and accompanying her is one more individual, Fern.

Like ever, the duo found themselves dealing with a peculiar task again. This time, it was the sudden disappearance of people along the mountain pass of a village, and you know, it only takes as much as a minute for Frieren to figure things out lol. Though she let Fern do it. The phantom magic might have Fern hesitated there for a minute… though not Frieren.

She obliterated the Himmel ghost, along with the fog, and then along with the demon causing this. No tough times as long as Frieren’s around:) Though she’s a bit quirky too, I mean who would go as far as taking upon a fucking dragon just because they wanna collect some strange magic from a grimoire lol.

But it was that way, we met the BRAVE Stark-sama, except the BRAVE thing was just a front lmaooo. He’s no dragon slayer in the making, just a boy who’s kind of caring and honest.

But Frieren has decided to give him a chance, looking forward to the battle next time!

Honestly was never a fan of Stark. I know it's his character to be cheeky and bratty but I just don't like him.

I'm glad we're picking up where we left off instead of rebroadcasting from episode 1 again.

Using their own memories against them that's a pretty nasty tactic.
Seems like the boy needs a lot more help then just defeating a dragon hopefully they can help him out.
Still the part with Fern and the dragon was funny.

I just noticed: at the end of the OP on the left is Frieren's old party and on the right is her new one.
"What does it mean that you were accustomed to hearing her beg for her life?" *cuts to next scene* So what does it mean???
The animation is stellar even for little comedic moments.
Lol didn't expect Stark to be like this. Does he use magic too?
No way this was 20 minutes long.

Yeah when faced against your loved ones, even when you know it's just an illusion it'll still shake you enough to not able to act, it's just humane to do that.

Stark finally appears and he's strong but a coward. Fern looked at him like he was filth.

Frieren and Fern's journey begins, and ghosts, dragons, and cowards appear...

This is quite the slow burn of a show, not very loud or action packed, but just a slow journey through the wilderness, with many encounters along the way, and it feels like a breath of fresh air for fantasy shows. The undead ghosts on the mountain pass were definitely tough to deal with for Fern especially, as they took advantage of her memories to make her hesitate in killing them, but good that she pushed past it. A lot of this show probably revolves around feelings around the past, and around loved ones, which is a very nice direction honestly. We also got to meet Stark, one hailed as a hero of a town, but the truth about him was hilarious. So far I really like the mixture of comedy, emotional moments, and the bits of action, as they mesh well. Looking forward to more!

Stark's personality in his introduction is a mixture of King from OPM and Zenitsu from KnY. Both King and Zenitsu were cowards, but King had that intimidating aura in him which made enemies retreat just from his presence even though he's weak and his fame is fake!! And zenitsu was one of the most powerful character in his universe when it mattered!!

I assume the destination is not that far that would take 10 years to reach, but by "follow the same path" as adventure means helping people in need along the path, and doing all kind of business along the way, that is why it takes 10 years.

The ghost monster is quite cruel, but the real monster is Frieren. I kinda feel bad for Fern, she's gonna waste her whole life assisting her master's journey to the past, instead of to the future. Fern doesn't even want to see Heiter ghost that much, but Frieren use that reward as a bait to take Fern with her.

A good episode but maybe the weakest of the bunch so far. A little bit dull at times but mostly was good with Stark being introduced here, although I was never the biggest fan of him in the manga. He isn't a bad character but not one that interests or entertains me a lot. After watching 4 episodes on the trot, 1 episode does feel a bit light but the pacing was a little slow for me in the middle so I feel okay with this one alone. Production was still stellar, the memories and callbacks with Frieren in the past were highlights as usual and the immersion is still quite there. The relationship between Fern and Frieren continues to be solid and as they talked about, they've known each other for quite some time now and will only be spending more and more time with each other on this lengthy adventure.

“That one hundredth changed you” it’s not the length of time we have people, but the quality. Eisen has had some very impactful quotes in these first few episodes. Already we’ve seen Frieren slowly begin to grow and truly live.

As the story finally begins to take shape, this episode we get introduced to Stark, apprentice of Eisen. Really funny dude. I love how he tried to show off his scar like it was something cool and Frieren just shoots it down 😂 Buddy did not want to fight that dragon at all. Looking for every excuse not to get involved.

He’s got the talent and strength as we saw with him creating the giant fissure. Just needs to grow mentally stronger.

I love how Frieren’s whole reason for collecting spells is because Himmel complimented her. That’s so cute, but it also shows how wrong she was in the beginning for writing off her adventures with the party as “less than one hundredth of my life”. As I said before, it’s about the quality of the time we spend with people, not the length.

For someone who lives for thousands of years, that one line that couldn’t have taken more than a few seconds has continued to be her driving force.

A very good episode, not quite as good as the first four, but still a lot of nice subtle tidbits in this one like I mentioned above.

Found it hilarious when Frieren ran from the dragon while leaving Fern behind.

A new party member to join the journey. I like Stark's personality so far and there seems to be more to him than what he's shown.

If Stark is capable of making cleaves that big as an apprentice, I can't imagine what Eisen is capable of doing.

Yay for OP and ED lyrics! I don't understand why more anime don't have this.

After watching the first 4 episodes at my own pace, watching the rest of the episodes weekly for a slow-paced show like this is going to be a challenge.

I like this new character Stark. He seems like he could be the comic relief character which might be what the group needs.

Can't wait to see how they defeat the dragon.

This is where the journey truly begins.

Eisen is such a well done character, we haven’t had much time with him but the time that we do have is full of inspiration. “That one one-hundredth changed you” meaning even a short period of time has the potential to change a person in any direction, what a powerful quote. Frieren’s growth is rising slowly but certainly and that has been made apparent since Himmel’s death. Change comes with time, and time comes with change. Same goes for Fern, who also has changed since her training began and ended.

The way magic continues to be introduced is great, slowly incorporating more and more aspects such as illusion magic and Phantoms. It’s a world full of magic, there’s always new about magic and I like how wide magic really is so I hope it continues to expand.
Dragon jumpscare! That bit was really funny, Frieren ditching Fern while she runs for dear life.
STARK IS HERE, he sounds just like how I imagined him while reading the manga. I really liked his dynamic in the manga, I wonder how they’ll portray him in the next episode! :D

Spectacular episode, really happy with the production value and quality so far.
Have a fun Friday :)

Luckily mages don't need to fight a lot. If the simplest attack spell cause that much destruction, would be a environmental problem.

Even Frieren with her thousand years experience cant solo a dragon. So she need the Joestar family's secret technique.

Stark's lack of experience fighting monsters, makes wonder how many monsters exist, really.

Not gonna settle for any nisermono (impostor), but Fern couldn't shoot until it was obvious.
I like how Himmel just says "Shoot me!", self aware even in her memories.

Stark is also an nisermono that is masquerading as a hero.

The scene where they shoot the dragon and run was funny.

Eisan might not be too much of a talker, but he certainly knows how to say something inspirational. "That one-one hundredth changed you." He's right on the money when he said that to Frieren. =)

The way that both Frieren and Fern dealt with the phantoms was well done. Trying to take out phantoms based on the people you love would be a tough challenge, but seeing how Frieren shrugged it off, it inspired Fern to do the same when dealing with a phantom version of Heiter.

With that issue dealt with, we later see the duo eyeing a grimoire laying in a dragon's nest, but the dragon is something that the pair of them can't win against just yet. While talking about what the grimoire contains (Which certainly belongs in an ecchi harem show, by the way!), they were guided to Eisen's apprentice, Stark. On the surface, he seems rather calm and knowledgeable, but he's in fact a bit of a coward. He has a mixture of Zenitsu (Demon Slayer) and King (One Punch Man) about him and how he channeled the power of Luigi to see off the dragon previously by doing absolutely nothing but stand on the spot, panicking, made him the hero of the village. XD

Still, seeing him train by himself should help give Fern a better impression of him compare to earlier. Here's hoping that he can help the girls to defeat the dragon next time.

I wonder how old Eisen is. Considering that in most fantasy-lore, dwarves can usually live between 100 to 300 years, it´s not that far fetched to think this is the case here. Considering the 28 years since Himmel died, plus the 50 years between the party separating and meeting again for the meteor shower, plus another 10 years that they spent together, that´s 88 years since Frieren and Eisen met. Considering that in the flashbacks he has the same look as he does now, I would guess he must be over 120 years old at least, right?

I also did not see that plot twist coming with Stark doing a 180 lol. Also Fern's pout face while her and Frieren were eating is too cute.

I'm thinking that the dragon either sensed power coming from Stark or was just so stunned at Stark standing up to him that he left Stark (and the town) alone for the time being.

Frieren has definitely changed as shown by her memories that the monster showed.
