What is your favorite BGM anime soundtrack?

Which show's BGM soundtrack is your favourite, if any? Is this anime one of your favorites or did you just get hooked on the background music on one of the random shows? Personally for me, the top has always been the soundtrack from Dragon Ball because of the maximum nostalgic notes of the adventure anime of the 80s.

I don't have a favorite one, but some of my favorites are Kanon, Yuru camp, Girls last tour, Clannad, One punch man, Jojo, Aot, etc.

For example, I really like this song:

Yeah it really does, it even has some liturgical biblical chants which give it a surreal and grandiose atmosphere of religious holiness.

A lot of the obvious choices actually make more active use of their music than 'background' really implies; Ef, FLCL, Kyoushirou to Towa no Sora, Now and Then Here and There, Welcome to the NHK, Princess Tutu and Utena.

Of things where the background music really is background music in an uncomplicated sense, I think Simoun, Xamd, Kuzu no Honkai and Gunslinger Girl would be my favourites.

And most of these things are really good. Kyoushirou to Towa no Sora is the exception, that's a show which I'd suggest skipping if it had unremarkable music.

I could say "it's sad that anime composers don't work as hard on atmosphere anymore these days", but I've noticed that more and more anime are trying to capture the vibe of a 00s show with all that visual novel BGM music these days.

Yeah, there is still effort put in the music of recent anime. Just listen to the made in abyss soundtrack, it's excellent.

My favorite overall BGM in anime is probably Welcome to the NHK.

There are a couple of soundtracks, and this is one of my favorites.

Majority of Bleach ost are my fav and I listen to them quite often. As example instead of using the choir/"epic" type of ost I'll go with Here to Stay which has a quite specific and special tone in it which I like, aswell as the orchestral approach in newest Shiro Sagisu's Song Book. When for the first time I've heard it through Flame of Rebirth livestream I can't tell why but I teared up just because of listening to the orchestral version,

FLCL - Last Dinosaur. One of my favorite soundtrack in anime. It reignited something in me that I cannot explain in words. It sounds upbeat & crazy fun yet it also feels strangely melancholic and sentimental.

But yeah nothing so far can compete with Aria's ost. Soundtracks usually have a handful of listenable songs but Aria has a ton of them. And they're all performed really well by an actual band.

That's actually my second favorite song in Clannad, but it's not used in the anime if I remember correctly, so maybe technically it's not an anime song(?)

The insert song Stories by Hitomi from Code Geass. This song is played in the 5th episode of the first season around 10:08 when Euphy and Suzaku take a walk in Tokyo. I first heard this captivating melody when I was 13-14; it has been my favorite ever since. Now, it evokes a profound sense of nostalgia within me whenever I listen to it. And yea, the series is my all-time favorite.

Oh, there are soooo many, but if I had to choose one, it's definitely Cowboy Bebop.

Now, strictly speaking about background music, Bocchi the Rock! has a lot of fun themes that go along with the scenes, adding up to an already wonderful direction.

Full OST is most likely Umineko no Naku Koro ni VN, anime alone too has good songs but VN is definitely much better in that regard.

If discarding VNs I would say Puella Magi Madoka Magica is overall best.

Music alone it is somewhat better than even Jigoku Shoujo

Jigoku Shoujo OST has least amount of bad tracks, but little really outstanding ones like Sis Puella Magica, Credens Justitiam or Venari Strigas.

Code Geass OST has a number of really touching songs like Stories, Innocent Days, Love is Justice, I wish I was a bird and Eternal Separation, there are some other good like Siegfried, Avalon or Master, but the the lover half is just alright (that is they are not bad, but not that much good either)

Fate/Zero has really good OST, it feets the story really well. The Battle is for the Strong. Let the Stars Fall Down, Dogfight, Babylonia, Dream Fades Before Dawn, The Beginning of the End, Tragedy and Fate, World is Tumbling Down

1.) Inuyasha
2.) Koi Kaze
3.) Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/Kai
4.) Shiki
5.) Mahoutsukai no Yome

Are my top five.

And then to a lesser extent other top-tier ones such as Ergo Proxy, Haibane Renmei, Elfen Lied, Usagi Drop, Noragami, Hanasaku Iroha, Sora no Woto, and Kenpuu Denki Berserk would also be up there.

Single soundtrack. Probably this one:

AoT isn't my favorite franchise, but it did play in one of my favorite seasons of anime if that makes sense.

In terms of overall:
Aria probably most favorite in terms of good soundtrack after good soundtrack
Others:
Gunslinger Girl, Ergo Proxy, Madoka Magica, Haikyuu, Eureka Seven, Hibike Euphonium/Lizm, Berserk

Ones I haven't listened to separately but I feel like I'll like them when I get a chance based on how I remember it:
Space Brothers, Giant Robo, Yuru Camp, Dennou Coil, To your Eternity,  basically Joe Hisashi composed works

Check out recent rom-coms like that show about edgy shorty or the streamer guy. There are quite a few piano melodies that are reminiscent of the soundtrack style of visual novels.

I rarely post in Anime Discussion but after two pages nobody's mentioned Rurouni Kenshin Trust & Betrayal OVA yet so my hand is forced... :)

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. Movie. Aside from the unforgettable use of Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes (Erik Satie) in places (not OST I suppose)) there are several other original tracks that altogether make this my #1. The complete range of emotion (happiness, fear, sadness, regret, hope, etc.) so well enhanced by the BGM is what really makes this one stand out for me.

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuiokuhen (aka Trust & Betrayal). OVA. Sad, oppressive but also peaceful/soft. My #1 for a long time. The TV series had a pretty good OST, too although it got a bit repetitive.

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199. Series. Mix of retro (redone) and modern.

Those are my top 3. Plenty of really, really good ones though like:

Haibane Renmei. If you want a good cry go here.
So Ra No Wo To. One of the reasons why this show hangs onto my #10 anime spot.
Girls & Panzer. All those epic military marches from many countries plus a couple of original (for the home team school).
Revolutionary Girl Utena. Deserves a mention for sure.

A few recent ones:

+1 Call of the Night which I agree is pretty cool (the OP by Creepy Nuts is amazing and I can't get it out of my head).
Akebi's Sailor Uniform. Cute and upbeat music perfectly complementing the show.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes reboot. There have been some really good tracks for this.
Super Cub. Also quite complementary.

+1 many of the shows mentioned by others.

In love with Soshite Ima currently. I love how it makes me feel and the memories it brings to mind from Chihayafuru even though it's been just a day since I finished watching it.

Then there's music from Hibike Euphonium and Liz to Aoi tora movie. I feel the same for these music too, the feelings they invoke in you while listening to them are undescribable.

There's music from Mushoku Tensei and Rezero too but everyone knows about them so not mentioning them here.

Fate series done by Ufotable. It compliments the fight in such an awesome way.
Demon slayer. This is slowly turning out to be the best work in anime in terms of Osts. Every season we get new and better soundtracks which is amazing.
Bleach. For an old long running shonen, it has the most memorable soundtracks.
Kara no kyoukai. Quite possibly Ufotable's first amazing work and the soundtracks never disappointed.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

Possibly my favorite three of all time or at least the three i think about most often...

Full Metal Panic: (especially during the final episode of the trilogy The Rising Wind In The Homeland, this hits hard)

Gintama: (when that guitar riff begins, i'm ready every time to laugh out loud a lot for some extremely funny meta commentary about the series, especially after the legendary episode 25 intro)

Ranma 1/2: (actually a combination of the first piece and the last 20 seconds of the second one, as it happened multiple times during the show. The strings are so dramatic especially in the outro, they make me still remember that time Ranma was suddenly stuck in girl form and in despair because of Cologne)

Kikuchi's Dragon Ball score used in the original anime run from 1986-1996 was so memorable that it is probably one of the few anime series that I have pretty much memorized each track in the OST from. Bleach also has a pretty memorable soundtrack as well so I would also say that it is one of my favorites

Kevin Penkin and his soundtracks for MiA are beyond words, elevating the atmosphere or scene. Yuru Camp's is really gentle and relaxing.
