I mean, I am a picky person, and to watch an anime, I want that anime to have a minimum rating of 7.15 (average). Is anyone picky like me or is it just me? Also, If yes, What is the minimum rating An anime should have to please/tempt you to watch it.

Same, for me to watch the anime it almost always has to be above 7 otherwise I most likely won't watch it.

I don't care about what ratings other users give anime here. I watch anime so I can appraise it for myself, without any prejudice or bias.

I only watch masterpieces so it has to be at least 8.60
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

I don’t really care about score but maybe at least a 5, if a show is below 5 then I would assume that I’m probably not going to enjoy it.

I ignore ratings while watching a series so I have no minimum. I think relying on scores stops one from consuming a lot of great media.

more than 6 at least. if it's below that it's definitely a waste of time in majority of the cases, anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. ratings can tell most of the time what to expect.

I will watch any trash that looks interesting.
5.5 is a perfectly reasonable rating for a good show, the average taste of MAL is pretty garbage.

The scores are easily manipulable. The Revue Starlight Movie (https://myanimelist.net/anime/40664/Shoujo%E2%98%86Kageki_Revue_Starlight_Movie) was ranked #100 on July 7th with an 8.55 rating and was placed above several spots higher than other shows with the same rating despite having a much smaller sample size. At the time I posted my comment in this thread (https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2104793) only 6,604 people had scored the show and it was placed higher on the rankings than Fate Zero, Fruits Basket Season 2, and another show which I have forgotten the name of. And that was with only 6,604 people scoring it and 16,642 users even interacting with the show in any capacity. As of July 11th, it now sits at #110 with an 8.54 and seems to be falling further with 6,634 people scoring the show. Why do I bring this up? Because what I said proves how meaningless MAL scores are. Anything can be scored highly, lowly, or however people want to score it and those scores mean nothing. The only opinion that matters when I want to watch a show is my opinion, not the shadow people living inside my router. It is 2023, we need to stop caring about dumb metrics like MAL scores or AniList scores.

The more I'm interested in the premise, the less I'll care about the score. It could be 4.xx or 5.xx, it doesn't matter.

When choosing which seasonals I'm gonna watch, if I'm not too fond of the genre, the line is usually between 7.00 and 7.50 (I mean above 7.50 watch, below 7.00 skip, between the two maybe). Of course, if there's any other reason that might make me interested like someone's recommendation, I'll still give it a try regardless of the score.

I can't quite grasp the distaste for ratings in this thread. It seems we've forgotten the very essence of what ratings are for - they serve as indicators. If an anime has an average rating of 5 based on 100,000 reviewers, it likely didn't earn that score without reason. I don't need to challenge this rating. I can't recall any movies or shows that I've watched and highly recommended, which had an average rating below 5. Of course, factors such as release date and the number of reviewers also play a part, but in principle, ratings provide a reliable guidepost for exploring new options. 99% of people don't have the time or the inclination to watch even 5% of all available animes, so they depend on recommendations, reviews, and ratings to make their choices.

It's okay to disagree with the ratings. I'd never rate Demon Slayer more than 5, but cases like this will always exist. Ratings are not absolute declarations. They simply increase the probability of finding something enjoyable by considering it as a useful metric.

An anime must have at least a rating of 8 to solely convince me, based on the rating alone, to give it a chance. This is simply because I do not have the time to watch more than two animes within a month, if any at all.

No minimum rating requirement for me since i really don't care what other people think about a certain anime, if it looks interesting to me in some way than i will just add it to my PTW.

If I'm scanning a seasonal chart for shows I've never heard of and don't find interesting from the key visual, title or description, I think an 8 could get me to watch the first episode anyway.

Your point? Most of those animes have a rating above 7. It's just that I found them pretty average after watching them. That doesn't mean I don't watch animes with a rating below 8. I also watch animes based on recommendations from friends and colleagues.

You have the herd mentality if you are deciding to watch anime only based on its rating. Being picky is a different thing altogether.
I never told I watch anime based ONLY on its ratings. I am telling that if an anime has this specific rating, it is more likely I will start watching the anime to decide whether is it worth by myself.
You may be right but Rating is itself used to determine whether the anime might be worth your expectations. People watch AOT and FMAB because they believe they can have a fun experience from it. It is the testimony of thousands who watched the anime and tells the people who still haven't watched the series what to expect and whether it would fulfill their expectations. Don't tell me people have fun watching a 2/3 rated anime instead of a 9 rated anime.

Score doesn't matter that much to me.
If I read the synopsis of a show and it sounds interesting to me, I watch it, even if the score is below a 5.
If a show doesn't sound interesting to me, it doesn't matter, even if it had a 10, I'm not going to watching it.

I see no causality between the country one lives in and whether one has time for a particular thing. This issue isn't exclusively about work either.

My comment wasn't just focused on the initial question posed in the thread, but also on how the discussion was being conducted. My comment literally begins with 'I can't quite grasp the distaste for ratings in this thread,' and I found it necessary to call out why ratings aren't as redundant as they are portrayed by some here. This is how discourse works – we represent and clarify our points of view and perspectives. Moreover, I clearly provided an answer to the question posed in the thread in my last paragraph.

However, I absolutely fail to understand the necessity of checking a user's profile and comments in other threads, not to contribute to the discussion at hand, but merely to leave a reply that displays disagreement without providing any substantial arguments.

I do care for scores as to what to expect in overall quality, but nothing much. Who knows? I rated 8 to anime scored 5.74 and rated 4 to anime scored 7.86 and I even have several anime rated <8 among my favorites. A low or high rating can depend on several factors like obsessive fans, a peculiar animation style or a story that might not be of everyone's taste.

I only use the score to set realistic expectations for things I already want to watch, and it heavily depends on genres, release year, staff, etc. An anime that is rated below 7.00 because it's a pre-2000 historical drama is still much more promising to me than the latest 8.50+ WSJ adaptation, because I know what I like and what the average MAL user likes.

If no writers/directors/original creators I know and like are working on it, then usually a 7.5 is the minimum that will get me thinking about watching something. Of course the concept has to interest me for me to even consider watching it. On the other hand I'm willing to watch nearly anything as long as someone I respect worked on it.

i don't pay much attention to mal ratings, which is just a dumb average anyway (a more informative statistics would be the average score from people with similar taste, but i guess that would be too much work)
if the series looks interesting enough, i will at least give it a try.

bruh anybody who doesnt watch 5s or 6s is just missing out
thats not necessarily a sign that an anime is bad, it can also mean that its divisive, and therefore INTERESTING
as u said it urself 7s are average so most of them are an equivalent of a mcdonalds cheeseburger
challenge urself at least a little bit cuz yal a missing out, half of my favs are below 7
and thats ignoring the 5s and 6s i wholeheartedly enjoyed that didnt get to be in my top ten
its the same with manga
lots of really interesting shit is under 7 because ppl miss the point or simply get triggered and score it a 1 all the while others give those 10s u know

MAL rating has no influence on my anime selections. Rationale: MAL is heavily dominated by people half my age and younger, and I'm simply not compatible with their taste on average. It's still one of several indicators, but by far not the most important. E.g. anidb's rating fits my taste much better.

I don't consciously avoid shows based on their score, but upon reflection I think I use a sliding scale.

If a show is one of those genres I tend to be more lenient since the low rating could be indicative of people finding the genre itself subpar rather than the quality of the show within its genre.

Anything from a more mainstream genre probably needs to be a 7.00 or better to be good since I imagine those are more palatable to the general population and thus their average score is inherently higher.

So in short, I'll give something with a 6.00 a shot if I'm in the mood for something low brow, but otherwise I tend to need at least a 7.00 to feel the investment will be worthwhile.
