It was great, sword fighting was a bit underwhelming but the opening does show glimpses of actual touching swords, so this might just be to show the difference in level.

I loved it. They did much better than I expected! The animation and art is on-point and I love the new voice actors. My only nitpick is that the dojo scene was better in the old anime, but just barely. All and all I am really pleased and I hope they keep up this level of quality for the coming arcs.

I was never a great fan of the comedy so episode one of this remake was a pleasant surprise, I hope it can stick to this feel.

I don't have much experience with Kenshin stuff aside from the Trust and Betrayal OVA. Obviously the tone is super different in that compared to the main series. Good first episode.

My memory of the original is very hazy having watched it more than a decade ago, but my immediate feeling is this is fine but I feel like the original had a better characterization of kenshin, its not radically different but I recall him being alot more of an unassuming goof so the contrast that he was actually really competent would feel greater, but ive also heard the og is an very unfaithful adaptation so I dont know how much of that was creative liberty, still i wish his voice was a little more like the original.

But I'll get over that, my memory being so shit for this means i wont really have many biases going foreword and will judge it more on its own.

Considering that Rurouni Kenshin is one of my favorite manga of all time, especially among shounen manga, I was partially curious about this anime. I know that the author's a scumbag but I was curious to see how this anime does as a reboot compared to the original one, which has elements of greatness but also is a much inferior version overall with art I wasn't in love with.

The anime looks a bit more standard and doesn't stand out as much like the original with the goofy feel, but it looks decent. The action looked solid enough although nothing mindblowing for modern anime standards, episode didn't feel like it was plodding along nor did it feel rushed for a premiere. The content itself is a good start of course, but the anime does feel a bit plain and not oozing too much charm and the music was pretty average. The original Kenshin anime had fantastic music so this in comparison, just pales by a lot. I went into this with cautious expectations and overall, I would say they are mildly positive for a start. I'll need to see more to get a better judgment of this show but for now, regardless of how the adaptation is, a part of me does find it dope to see Rurouni Kenshin weekly in 2023 considering how much I loved the manga when I read it initially, and re-read it 3 years ago.

Regarding the OP and ED, I like the ED song, do not care whatsoever for the opening which is a disappointment.

Animes only need remake if the original didn't follow the manga or ended up with bad animation.

That being said this looks promising. I saw the original a while back along with the OVA, it was a great experience and I want to see the story again being faithful to the manga.

I think the first episode was done just right and even kept some moments in the manga that the original anime did not have - maybe because it made it too adult? I’m unsure. I’m hoping the second arc of the manga can finally be adapted though… I would love that. Was not a fan of the filler season in the original.

Alright so far. Of course way too early to judge such a long series based on just the first episode. In particular 90s shounen can get so much better the further you're in. That said, I prefer the style of the OG series and the manga.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

After watching the Urusei Yatsura remake I’ve been wanting to check out some more of these remakes, so I decided to go with this one and I’m glad I did, this first episode was interesting and definitely had that classic anime feel to it. I have also not seen many sword fighting anime but I’m always down for a historical show, I’m liking both aspects so far for sure. I already like our MC Kenshin, he seems like a wholesome lad but he can also turn the badass mode on which is cool to see, and I enjoyed Kaoru as well, she’s cute and I feel like over time she could start kicking ass too.

And we got a very nice OP and ED, I think I prefer the ED slightly as of rn, not sure how they compare to the originals songs tho, and from what I hear the original has very good music. And similar to Urusei Yatsura, if I end up liking this I may go back and watch the OG because I am definitely not one to shy away from old school anime! And lastly, it’s nice having this and Jujutsu Kaisen on the same day, they’re both 2-cour shows as well so I’ll be enjoying this combo for the rest of the year!

Well, it's finally here. The Rurouni Kenshin remake. The second adaptation of a manga that sold a whopping 72 million copies! I first started watching the 1996 version back in October 2013 (never fully finished it, as I never watched any of the episodes after ep 62 since they were all filler), and finished the final episode of the Trust and Betrayal OVA in July 2014, which was 9 years ago, so I have a lot of nostalgia with the series. I also read the Jinchu arc after finishing all the canon episodes of the 1996 anime (since it was never adapted in the 1996 anime), not expecting it to ever get a remake, yet here we are, and now I regret reading it because I already know the full story of the original manga.

From what I can tell, this first episode of the 2023 version is a lot closer to the manga than the 1996 version was, so this is already looking like a more faithful adaptation than the 1996 version that Studio Gallop did, which took liberties. Can't wait to see Sanosuke Sagara, who is my favourite character from Rurouni Kenshin.

It's gonna be interesting to see whether people prefer the 1996 version or the 2023 version more. Though, it's a shame that it couldn't be a 50+ episode anime with no breaks like the original was. Let's face it, a lot of us fans of the original anime/manga are just waiting for the Jinchu arc to finally be animated, which will take a while before that time comes.

I'm just glad I'll be able to watch this from beginning to end, much like HxH it was super sporadic when they were being aired on national television in my country, besides animation and story what this show is really going to have to prove itself against the original anime is in the music department, the original anime was banger after banger, nothing to complain with Reol but I didn't like the OP that much but it may grow on me.

Well I didn't like the fact that they brought up the flashback on battle against Saito and Souji right at the beginning of the series. Other than that, I think it's fine. There are altercations but it's not crazy bad. Besides, they have adapted Kihei in the story, that's a good thing, I'd miss Ayame and Suzune though(two filler characters).

Big fan of the original, for a modern remake this was pretty good.

I reread the manga a couple years ago so hopefully my memory of the events remain intact.

I was worried if the animation and fight scenes would hold up, but it seems decent so far. The part where Kenshin disposes of the lackeys could have used more flair, felt a little flat.
Only complaint so far is that the soundtrack feels lacking compared to the original.

Hopefully we can get a faithfully adaptation with decent production.

Kenshin's personality is the silent but friendly type. Well, I like Kaoru's design and her personality is nice. Not sure what to say on this, it's a decent start with decent animation. The ending is hella good though/

hell yeahhhh oro is back!! been excited for this one and damn lidenfilms killed it with the visuals. i do prefer the old osts and VAs though, but new ones are good too. kenshin's voice is the most drastic change from the goofy to now somewhat more serious tone, but for some reason, i'm already more used to this change than with kaoru's.
the old first OP and ED were bangers, and the new ones matched up and dropped 2 new bangers! great adaptation all round as far as this episode goes, hope it stays this way throughout. 2 cours of this will be a real treat.
and no, i do not care about the mangaka. he doesn't affect the goodness of kenshin in any way.

To someone who has watched and read Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X for my Brazilian fellows), I really enjoyed it, but I had some problems.

The voice acting seems to lack the ability to convey emotions, even Rieri, who is an amazing voice actor, but for some generic energetic anime characters.

Kenshin talked too much on this first episode and don't looks like that "goofy person" from the manga and the first series, this can change everything from the character main characteristic.

Another problem is with the “dark moments.” For example, in this episode, in the manga and the first anime, the colors change with a darker filter, conveying a feeling of fear at night.

And the last and greatest problem… Kenshin’s eyes. In his “Battousai” mode, when he’s angry, his eyes only change shape without those scary monster eyes that we saw in the manga and the first anime. This one only changes the format by being more closed and not changing from “normal Kenchan” to “Battousai” as it should.

But it’s only the first episode. We have a lot to see if they adapt all of the first series.

I've never seen the original series nor have I read the manga, but heard lots of good things about Rurouni Kenshin in general. The animation and the overall vibe definitely reflects a modern anime.

Since this is only the first episode, I can hardly tell what this is exactly about or lets better say where the story will lead to. Nonetheless am I interested and in a way excited what awaits me.

OP is quite catchy, but I already prefer the ED.

Should be a fun ride. Looking forward to the next episode.

Animation is ok, art itself, shading etc is good.
Audio is terrible, it just sounds like they're reading quickly through a script in one sitting, there is no sense of presence, no sense of location, and no emotion. Either new and inexperienced voice actors, or badly directed, and little to no post production to help it fit the scene. Totally immersion breaking for me.

Episode content very rushed compared to the original too, a lot missing, for example it makes her invitation for him to stay seem really quite out of place there's far less shown of a connection being made.

Edit: By episode 2 it's growing on me a little, but the original voices are still just far too dear to me, and I do think actually better, especially for Kenshin, the change is just too great.

Starting things off setting up our main two characters Kenshin and Kaoru. An unlikely pair brought together, I love their interactions this whole episode. Kenshin is the epitome of laidback carefree attitude, with nothing bothering him except when someone he cares about gets hurt.

It's finally here! Rurouni Kenshin is one of the anime that marked my childhood alongside Cardcaptor Sakura (which already got its own remake back in 2018) so the idea of it receiving a remake nowadays feels rather surreal. Without a doubt, the seasonal I'm going to be looking forward to the most week after week.

That said, strong start overall. The goofiness was toned down and animation looks more decent from what I was expecting. Only nitpick would be how "bright" the new art-style is. Not gonna lie, it will take me some time to get used to it.

OH YES, it's here a new reboot of RUROUNI KENSHIN!!!! I really enjoy the first episode and the pace is perfect, my most favorite series from Jump. The only thing I have to get used to is Kenshin's new voice: I really got used in how the 90's version was ( an actress did his role): that's what I get for watching the series so much in the past, lol

At first I was a little put off by the less "mature artstyle" but then when I watched the show, I was super impressed with how well it worked, THEN I pulled out the manga and realized this show is actually much more faithful to the manga whereas the original show aged everyone up to look a lot more mature and beautiful. Haha

As a former kenkao shipper and bad fanfic author. Even when I had the bad mindset to compare this show, scene to scene, beat by beat to the original, I must say that it has exceeded my expectations.

The music is good, although it can never measure up to the literally unparalleled original soundtrack. Kenshin is so assertive and manly here which is quite refreshing. Art direction is ON POINT. Voice acting is excellent.

The only drawback so far is that I feel the cinematography of the battle scenes need some work. The moves are all there but they don't tie together as convincingly as the original show. You don't get as much of a sense of "movement". For example, in the original, when he saved Kaoru the first time, you see him running up from a long way away to tackle her out of the way, in the new show he just kind of appears. In the original, when he dodged her first attack, he flew for a long time and you could feel where he was and how he was moving. This is a persistent flaw that I noticed in all of the action scenes where they show you the moment, but not what is between those moments.

Other than that flaw, I think this show overceded all of my expectations and I am super happy that it has come back in this form. Longterm fan approved. Having said that, if they want to just... remaster the original in modern resolution and reedit some of the more fillery episodes and make jinshuu art in that direction.... I will NOT mind ONE bit and crush anyone who does! Haha

Watsuki why did you have to do what you did you FOOL.

27 years later eh... Well, this first episode was surely interesting. The animation is clean. The songs were good, but in my opinion they could have brought Sobakasu and Tactics in remastered versions, or sung again by their respective artists. The story is what we already know, so I'll just watch and hope the plot flows well (and finally not filleristic!) This time
