Arguably two biggest isekai.

Their source novels aren't over, and there could be more adaptations, maybe even good ones, but as far as impact on the pop culture goes, and setting the world on fire once again...

Is the party over?

dunno about sao but rezero is still big. we are expecting a season 3 announcement this year as well. rezero is still just getting started, it's peak fiction. it's never gonna die out.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

SAO isn't dead. No way they won't make an anime adaptation for Unital Ring.

I'm really not sure about Re:Zero. A lot of people don't like it because of season 2 (the second half was boring so I don't blame them), but there's also a lot of people who like it, myself included. They do have something at AnimeJapan this year, so I'm hoping they at announce something.

As for SAO, I feel like it's hard to find someone who likes it, despite it's immense popularity. I don't think SAO is going anywhere, especially with the progressive movies. I would even go as far as to say that the regular SAO light novels will probably receive a full adaptation once they finish up. Possibly the same thing with the progressive novels.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the question and your asking if they have already experience their peak in popularity. In this case, I would say Re:Zero has yet to reach it's height, while SAO has long passed it (at least in most areas outside of Japan). SAO is still really popular, but probably not as popular as it used to be.

Either way, I'm still watching both when new content comes out.

Sword Art Online's is over.
Re:Zero, honestly I think it should be over. Don't get me wrong, I love the show. But it's presence is smothering 2020s shows.
I could not stop comparing it to Mushoku Tensei and I didn't enjoy that feeling at all. I recognize that Re:Zero is the best Isekai of the 2010s, but it spilling in to the 2020s was a double edged sword.

BOTH are still relatively popular but no one has cared about SAO since 2012 unless it's to talk about how it sucks and why it was so popular. I Mean did any one watch or care about Alicization?

SEASON 2 of Re 0 was super hyped and it was pretty disappointing. KILL off your uber waifu and make your story boring AF?

I like SAO so I'll watch a new season but I dropped RE 0 's 2nd season.

SAO still has cultural impact. In Japan, SAO popularized the isekai anime trend that continues to this day, whereas Re:Zero has not had an obvious influence on the content that Japan produces.  SAO is big enough that the Aincrad remake, SAO Progressive, is going to get completely adapted. In the Western anime community, SAO, along with Fate/Zero and Attack on Titan, were a lot of people's gateway into anime as anime became mainstream in 2012/2013, so a lot of people are going to remember it. SAO is still among the go-to gateway anime recommendations, up there with Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Code Geass, FMAB, Fate, etc.

Re:Zero came out later, when people were into the seasonal anime craze where they watched anime and then forgot all about it 6 months later. Re:Zero will probably never get fully adapted. The web novel story arcs keep getting longer and longer and it still isn't over. At the pace the anime adapts the chapters (which is already relatively fast compared to other shows given that they cut out the OP and ED to fit more story into the time allotted), it would take another 100 episodes to finish Re:Zero, but with the way the current anime industry works that is unlikely to ever happen. Only the MAJOR money makers like One Piece or My Hero Academia or Pokemon get 100+ episodes nowadays. Everyone else gets 12 episodes, maybe a sequel season or two, and that's it. Most anime adaptations never reach the end nowadays. The lack of an ending is one of the reasons why you almost never see Re:Zero recommended as a beginner anime, unlike Eva or FMAB or SAO.

I don't know much about Re:Zero, but SAO is still fairly popular in Japan. It just had its 10th anniversary, too. A1 Pictures is going to keep creating shows/movies for it until the money runs dry, and that's not happening anytime soon in Japan considering that the novel is still one of Japan's best sellers of all time.

Dunno about re:zero, there is still One big arc from Sao which is supposed to come out, if I remember well it is called Unital Ring, not to mention Progressive series x). [From what I remember Unital Ring is not last but it is supposed to be bigger than Alicization]
I wonder if they'll animate Moon Cradle little arc.
I wonder how many volumes are already out from Unital Ring as I've paused reading novels after Moon Cradle to make a break x).

And btw Sao is not an isekai, it has the vibe but I ain't including it into Isekai. I forgot it is still debatable till today [?].

Some people consider Sao to be dead, don't forget that it had 10th anniversairy while Bleach which hasn't died just cameback after 10 years so yeah... Titles are not dying that quick, even Gladiator is receiving a sequel after 24 years x) [Planned for 2024]

SAO was still Kadokawa's top earning franchise last year (anime only). It's still huge and popular in Japan.
Re:Zero lost a position last year and placed third Kadokawa's top earning franchise for 2022, only behind SAO (as stated before) and Overlord that had a new season last year though.

They are both insanely popular.

I remember SAO & AOT came around same time & blew up immediately introducing people to anime, but now in 2023 its not even fair how fucking far apart are both series in terms of quality, writing & reception. while SAO feels like immature attempt from 10 yr. old to hamfist story into his wet dreams. AOT is in completely different leaugue written by professional writer influenced by literature & seminal works in fiction, even comparing them sounds like a bad joke.

I would say both are still popular, just that they havent gotten new seasons, I don't know a why for Re:Zero but SAO is still publishin the next arc after Alicization, so it is still not ready for a new anime season, in the meantime they are adapting Progressive with movies.

nah i personally feel that the "heyday" or whatever arent over. there is still a large following and ppl are just doing their own things until the next season of the rezero anime (which might or might not come thanks mushoku tensei :))

also, i personally feel rezero's popularity is much lower than SAO's popularity. A comparable show in terms of popularity to rezero would be no doubt konosuba
