this is what im observing for many years now with my time here on MAL

there are lots of threads and criticisms about weak plot (especially plot hole complains) and reviews saying this show and that have weak plot and have lots of plot holes but the silent majority prefers lovable characters and good animation more than a strong plot with no plot holes

so yes this reviewers and other critics are just the vocal minority so agree or disagree?

no, a strong plot is everything and a weak plot with plot holes ruins the show (your vote)

The critic in me hates to see plot holes, even if everything else is good.

Likable characters can be enough, but the answer for your LycoReco thread remains that the plot should have been better. Attachment to characters also becomes weaker because of a weak plot. So overall "I do not know" is the closest answer I guess but really it depends. I dislike LycoReco having a weak plot because it now decides to focus on but for other shows I may not care as much.

considering there are hundreds (thousands?) of series out there in the world with basically no plot to speak of let alone plot holes that are still well liked, clearly not

it's not as though plot doesn't matter and it depends on the show, but I think plot holes are little more than interesting trivia

if they make or break a show for someone then they are probably having a lot broken for them, and they are also probably the type to talk a lot during the movie at a theater, and this is why nobody likes them

kinda depends on the show. Some shows are more plot heavy while others focus on other things, such as character interactions. Obviously the more plot focused shows would suffer more from a weak plot or plot holes than a less plot focused show.

I'd still argue that even less plot heavy shows, or even shows that have "no plot" (ex. Nichijou) benefit from having decent story writing. No matter how good the characters are, a badly written show is still going to be unenjoyable.

Characters are the most important thing for me, if I like the characters, I'll watch anything with them.

Regarding the plot, it all depends upon how much the other factors are going to carry. I wanted to give an example by comparing GOH with Kabaneri about how one of them does visually way more interesting things than the other but this might turn into a Mappa vs Wit thing, so I digress.

Also, a lot of slice of life anime doesn't necessarily have a plot, but people like them anyway.

It's pretty obvious that a good plot (or good writing) is important, this shouldn't even be a discussion to begin with, you probably don't like whatever your favorite anime is solely because of animation and character designs, you like it because the writing makes those characters endearing, which is also part of the general story. What most people fail to understand is that plot holes are usually irrelevant unless they're glaring enough to break the logic of the whole story or hinder whatever themes or message it's trying to convey, these people also tend to call things they merely failed to understand "plot holes" when in actuality they don't present any inconsistence or contradiction with anything that was established earlier in the story. I blame shit like Cinema Sins and similar "review" styles where the person thinks pointing out weird minor events in a story means they're a good critic or whatever.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I'm willing to forgive a weaker plot if the characters are well-written. The thing is that it's the characters that drive the story, they are the reason why events happen in the first place, and they are the reason why people care for what's happening. So while you can have an airtight plot, if the characters are terribly written or just bland, then don't expect me to get invested. Ideally any creator should strive to have both a good plot and characters, but if I had to choose one over the other, I'd choose characters any day.

BUT the thing is... if a story is well written then the characters are definitely most likely going to be will written too, because as someone already said they're part of the story. so to me plot and characters go hand in hand. However I usually don't mind weaker art/animation. Just look at some of the shows i have on my favorites... some have been criticised for it (higurashi)

Yes pretty much, thats why CGDCT and Trashy RomComs are relevant. Lovable characters can simply make a weak plot somewhat enjoyable, while a strong plot can be ruined by bad characters. Animation is somewhat an important part now since some people or newbies are often unmotivated to watch a bad/old animated shows. I won't say plot isn't important tho

Depends on the genre.
Nobody would expect AOT level of writing in CGDCT, for example.

It's all about show being selfaware.
You might have garbage cast of characters and random shit happening for nor reason, but if that trashy show will try to tell some deep, thought provoking story, it will fail miserably.
That's why SAO receives so much shit.

Either of them on their own are not enough. Anime with lovable characters make the anime watchable but it won't work for all types of animes and will get boring after a point.

Strong plot is a great thing but doesn't mean much if the characters are unlikable.

For an anime to be enjoyed by me, a little plot should be present and lovable characters are a must, I mean it is characters which make the anime, I can't enjoy the show if I don't like the characters.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

Yes i absolutely agree with that point, i couldn't care less about the story if the animation is spectecular, however i would drop a show even with a good plot if the animation is bad.

Plot can be anything it can be cookie cutter or deap one but characters are definitely more important than plot I really like jujutsu kaisen plot is anything over the top or new but I really like the characters while I can't say same about demon slayer plot is below average which shouldn't bother me but the characters in demon slayer are so terrible they left a bad taste in my mouth I only like tomioka and rest of the cast of demon slayer is terrible terrible

Both are needed in varying amounts depending on the genre of anime. If it is a slice-of-life anime where it's more about the growth of characters in their day-to-day lives then the characters should be written well enough to fit the setting. Basically, the characters take precedence over the plot in a slice-of-life anime.

In a more action-driven anime, it is expected to be more plot-driven because all that action with a terrible or unsatisfying plot is just a waste of time.

If the plot is bad, the anime is bad.

If the plot is decent or there is no plot, animation and characters are enough to make a good anime.

Eh it depends, but for me most of the time plot is more important than characters and animation. I'm super picky when it comes to liking characters, therefore me liking a cast usually comes hand in hand with how well-written a storyline is. And if the storyline is good, I'd still like a show even if it has bad animation.
I'm assuming you're talking about CGDCT shows and the like. Almost never like those kinds of shows. I've heard a lot of things about Lycoris Recoil, and I've decided not to watch it based off of what I've heard, cause I'm 99% sure I would not like it. Honestly, same for Call of the Night, but the directing and music is so good that I decided to just finish watching the show anyways. And yep, I couldn't care less for the storyline and cannot see myself rating it any higher than a 3/10, despite how great the animation is. Ultimately, I'd have to go with the second option.

Not every show needs to have a strong plot to be a good show. The show needs to have likable characters, good development throughout the show, and decent to good animation to be a good show. This is especially true for character-driven shows primarily slice-of-life shows.

I mean it all really depends on the genre I'm watching

If I want to watch a SoL I'm obviously wanting the animation to be good enough with lovable characters without too much care for the plot

On the other hand if I'm watching anything else good animation would be a huge+, but I'd rather have a strong plot. I still want the characters to be likeable though either way

I'll just vote I don't know option since it really varies on my mood for these things lmao

yes, good animation and lovable characters are enough (your vote) + Good music is must.

If the above requirements are met a weak plot and some plot holes are not a big deal.
It is shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult.

I certainly love shows that have a strong focus on likeable characters, but that is not every anime. In a more serious show, with higher stakes, the plot is far more important than a slice of life comedy, for example. To say one is not important really just depends on what you want from the show.

If I was watching a really serious anime and a plot hole takes me out of the experience that would be pretty annoying. Even if I'm not a stickler for that kind of thing I understand the criticism.

This ground is soiled by those before me and their lies. I dare not look up for on me I feel their eyes

It depends on the genre. For eg many rom-com doesn't really has an engaging plot but their characters makes us keep engaged in the story. But rom-com like love is war are exceptions where both the things are present, a engaging and good plot with well written characters and that's why that anime is peak of its genre.

Take aot as another eg it only has handful of well written characters specially in S4 but it's plot that kept us engaged in the story.

So In conclusion It depends on the genre but A strong plot increases the quality of a show in a way that strong characters with weak plot can't.

In my opinion, there's no point in having great characters, if the plot and story don't make any sense or have major holes in them. You don't watch an anime to see what the characters are like. You watch an anime to experience the story. Same with movies, books, games, etc. You also can't have S-Tier characters, when there's no real story. The story makes the characters shine, it gives them their value. I don't mind minor illogical things as long as they are not immediately noticeable and don't occur too often. But having a good story with bad written characters sucks as well. You need to have both, but the plot/story is more important.
