For me this particular show called "Haibane renmei" were talked a lot about when it's called as masterpiece and it was like 3-4 years ago but i kept it on hold and recently i watched this show, ngl it was ok but not that great as people were hyping it to be.

What were the hype shows for you all which were talked a lot about in anime community but actually failed to deliver?

Shigurui is hyped a lot but I got bored with it. The only things I enjoyed were the highly detailed violence and gore.

Natsume Yuujinchou

I'm a huge fan of Slice of Life, but I fell asleep while trying to watching this shit.

More like the show wasn't for you. The Natsume Yuujinchou series in general have been pretty good, I'm not sure why you're saying they're were "hyped up" because when it came out, the show literally came out of nowhere and captivated a lot of ppl's hearts and from then on has been looked forward to since.

Well not a show but episode 19 of Demon Slayer was so hyped up when I watched it I expected something absolutely crazy to happen and what we got was...amazingly animated fight with beautiful soundtrack.

The problem is that's the entirety of demon slayer, I felt no emotion during ep 19 fight I mean come on

i would say Index season 3.
the fandom waited years for this and the celebration was enormous.
but almost everyone was dissapointed by the adaptation.

and for me Kamisama ni Natta Hi very much.
first is was like omg the same people who make Angel Beat and Clannad.
and the first episodes were very auspicious.

but then oh god, such dumb stuff. i hate it.

and many more, but just this two came first in my mind.

I genuinely think 86 is okay at best. But I guess that the anime community thought the show was revolutionary since anime is the only medium they watch.

Jujutsu Kaisen. It wasn’t terrible, but it didn’t even get close to living up to the hype for me. Sure, the animation and ost were top tier but apart from that I found it very lacklustre. Idk if it wasn’t to my taste or I wasn’t in a great mood while watching it but certain things were off about it to me. I might try watching it again and see if the experience is better.

Mushoku Tensei, but probably because of different reasons than most of the people here. As a big fan of the LN I hoped for a perfect adaptation. While reading I visualized every scene and hoped it will be basically 1:1 adaptation.. But in the end they've left out so many details and world building that I was rather disappointed... Guess it's better to never expect too much. So it's my fault. I hyped it too much for myself.

I wish we had more LN adaptations like 86 and Rokka no Yuusha, where 1 cour adapts just 1 volume.

From the last (winter of 2021) season - Wonder Egg Priority. The newest series I've dropped, around episode four...when it began wading into the whole contemporary gender politics debacle.

From the current (spring of 2021) season - Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song. It had many decent points, don't get me wrong, but this isn't the type of series which due to the nature of its pacing, construction, and execution relative to its length can really rise above a 6/10 for me. I find it already entering the Top 100 rankings somewhat shocking and very unearned compared to some other seasonals I'm watching at present that are like 1,000 ranking placements down.

Yes, the premise is good and one which promotes intrigue - of course it is. That's why it's been done so many times before. Therefore, it's what you do with it. Yes, many instances of gorgeous animation, but I don't think that can supplant the importance of story structure and originality.

A friend of mine hyped me up for Promised Neverland, the same friend who hyped me for Attack on Titan, I loved AOT so much, so I was looking forward to this, and I thought Promised Neverland was good, but it's just not as I was expecting it to be I think the hype around it is understandable with the premise, it's just not up there with the greats for me
it's still quite good tho

people may not remember it but Dragonaut was pretty hyped. It was an original anime from gonzo with great character designs, mecha and 26 episodes, it was supposed to be good but unfortunately it did not deliver.
back in the day, gonzo originals were as hyped as pa works or kyoani originals

It's hard to find an anime that isn't gassed up by certain people. From AoT Final season to CSM, everything is sold as game changing masterpiece.

aot, my hero academia, your name, bunny girl senpai, demon slayer, fmab, none of them interested me because i never liked any character in them too much, jujutsu kaisen, it wasn't the anime but more gojo's character that was hyped but i found it annoying, enjoyed a lot the arcs in which he didn't appear like junpei's arc and the final+inittial mini arc, also re:zero, this were hyped up by friends and your lie in april and anohana too, the female leads in tearjackers are just annoying to a new level, other shows but of which i saw little of so my opinion might change, one piece, naruto, gintama

Record of Ragnarok. Even after that terrible PV, people still thought the show itself would be different, but boy they were wrong..

Tokyo Revengers is also very overhyped, and it's not deserved.

Wonder Egg Priority cheated the watchers. As it was airing, it started getting hyped, but it was deserved up until episode 9. After that, I completely changed my opinion on it.

People were crazy about the God of High School and set their expectations very high, but the anime sucked ass.

think of aot, but with horrible writing, underdeveloped characters, wafiu's, fanservrice, garbage pacing, the most ehhh action in the universe, that people for some reason praise to no end, plot that takes itself way to serious, with baffling allegories that it can't even use correctly in the context of the show, and terrible worldbuilding to making even understanding the very simple plot a nightmare to even understand,

Yeah about wonder egg priority i was feeling good as it was a serious issue but the moment they pin it up on AI, it just took away the whole seriousness of the situation coz before i could have related to it but later it's just a sci-fi horror plot.

Probably the worst for me is anything from the 90's that was highly praised. I avoided stuff like Cowboy Bebop for so long since thats my natural reaction when people won't get off somethings junk. Unless it's something I had already watched before seeing the jerkfest of course. Needless to say I was completely underwhelmed when I finally got to these "masterpieces".

Only 1⁄8 of 86 was adapted. That's barely scratching the surface. Sounds like saying Berserk sucked after finishing the Black Swordsman arc, or saying LoGH sucks after the first season. I'm an anime only but even I can see whatever it had in store that obviously was not gonna be actualized within one cour.

Fire Force was hyped everywhere, like on Tik tok and the internet in general, the animation looked sick so I check out the anime...it was completely rubbish besides the animation, a messy plot that didn't have a red thread to follow, bland characters with no character development whatsoever, lame jokes, a complete waste of time IMO

Yuru Camp in general, imo it's basically just an ok fine to good 7/10 at best show, but somehow it managed to be up there in the +8.2 score range ..it's 2nd season even hit's 8.55 currently.
Just very overhyped for it's genre imo.

But if show is serialized and all we have is 1/8th that is presented as a complete season why shouldn't it face criticism for its shortcomings?

For me AoT, I think it is a great anime but people just don't shut the fuck up about it especially those newer to anime.

I have had people mention anime and when I tell them I am a big anime fan they often go straight to AoT but when I bring up other shows they have no clue because its one of the few they have seen.

Most fighting shounen feel this way but some just stand out. Especially newer ones. KnY, AoT, JJK etc I liked them all no complaints just people see them I think more for the animation and hype than for anything more. We are all who we are though no blame going on just wish some people had a broader interest, but hey some people only watch action movies so what ever.

Outside of those I dunno it is too subjective. If you aren't huge into certain genres then it is likely the really popular shows in that genre will feel overhyped, the hype will get you to watch it but it is just going to feel like another of a genre you already don't really love.

The standouts will be anime that are broadly disappointing. Like God of Highschool. I only know 1 person who actually really loved it and he is almost entirely about animation so it makes sense.

It should receive criticism for things that would reasonably be expected for a one-cour introduction to deliver. It shouldn't be given criticism for "How have they not humanized all of cast, delved into the national politics of its universe, resolved the racial conflict that goes on, and introduced a supervillain with fleshed out motivations yet? Sounds like a failure to me!"

When I was awaiting for the new season of Shingeki no Kyojin people wouldnt stop saying that it would be mind blowing, attack profound topics and that the political themes would be extremely deep, when I saw it I could do nothing but scratch my head thinking that I was watching something entirely different than them

Most, especially when they are new/airing. I usually avoid those like the plague.
Took me some time to watch Bunny Girl Senpai for example, someone said its like Monogatari mixed with Haruhi which made me think its likely nowhere near that good and gets overhyped by normies who only know Naruto. A it turns out it was not. Good show, but nothing you would really miss

It might be some kind of phobia, I have some highly rated shows on my radar and just wont touch them for multiple seasons at which point I genuinely lose interest in them.

Lol Im watching that same anime right now and I share your opinion

To me genre should dictate expectation.
Battle Shounen should have good animation, because Im expecting good fights but subpar characters and a repetitive plot.

Episodic anime like Kinos Journey I expect good pacing, artwork and characters(sometimes replace this with good in-episode message)

After a while you know what to expect of an anime based on the genre, so hype isnt really a factor

2 shows recently.

First: Horimiya
While the first half definitely lived up to the hype (in my opinion), the second half unfortunately was not as good. After the first half of episode 8 it went downhill for me.
The second half of episode 8, episode 9 and a bit of episode 10 felt like an anime original (I found out after finishing the anime that this was not anime original), I mean they were funny if looked at in a vacuum, but they didnt really fit in well with the rest of the episodes.
If they had left those out and used the free time to better elaborate the episodes 10-12 it would have been much more enjoyable to me.
A few key moments in those last episodes leave 0 impact, despite being really important because the show rushes through them.

The second show is: 86
The action scenes are quite messy and over before you even realise what happened at times and the pacing is way to fast (I usually like fast-paced anime, but this is too much even for me), therefore all the characters are bland/forgettable and no death leaves any impact whatsoever.
The show has 11 episodes, but with some slight changes episode 9 could have been the final one already, thats how much they rushed through this.
24 episodes, a siginicant slowdown and more... well everything and this show could ave been really good.
As it is now it's only mediocre.
I do wonder how much and why they cut so much from the source material, because I doubt the original is as flat and empty as the anime adaptation...

Gokusfushudou could have been THE anime. They had it all, top tier source material, the best possible seiyuu for the MC...

And they flushed it all down the drain by making a power point presentation instead of an anime -.-
