I can only name typical ones like Hunter x Hunter, Vinland Saga, One Punch Man, Death Note and Parasyte. Yeah I'm generic like that. Are there any you think that mainstream folks like me should know?

Watamote has a hardcore Opening. Does that count lol? This might be heavy metal though and I feel like metal and "heavy" metal would be consider two different genres of music?

I don't really like metalcore but that was refreshing to hear some in anime anyway.

Detroit Metal City - the show is about metalheads with a metal OST
Deadman Wonderland
Berserk
Prison School
Claymore ? - OP is from Nightmare who made firsts OP and ED of Death Note

Aggretsuko - the show also features a metalhead main character though it's more comedic

Yeah the opening was animated by studio 4°C who usually have very cool visuals. Macross 7, its direct sequel Macross Dynamite 7 and the Macross 7 film all have hair metal soundtracks.
Two other anime I forgot to mention are Bubblegum Crisis and Gundam 0083 (OP 2 is fire)

Kaiji's OP is most definitely punk rock, not metal.

As for the topic at hand, both seasons of Chaika have metal openings.

I was thinking of the second season opening because OP mentioned the band that sings it but you're right I didn't make it clear.

How are they not?
"unravel" is hardcore (as are some other suggestions here) and "Kachō Ōji" is literally about a heavy metal band.

I don't really know the differences between the different types of metal. Is "chase" heavy metal?

Ignore the music at the end. That's not part of the opening

Judging from most of these replies, I'm guessing that a lot of people can't differentiate between rock and metal and any song that's accompanied by guitar. As a metalhead I would say that the Aggretsuko OP is metal.

Another question is, what do you consider heavy metal? Death Note OP 2 (by Maximum the Hormone) to me isn't that heavy, but others might consider this really heavy.

Tokyo Ghoul's op is not heavy metal. Not every rock song is heavy metal. If we count Unravel as heavy metal, then half of Naruto openings are heavy metal too, and this thread becomes pointless.

I corrected myself, didn't I?
Some hardcore entries here weren't turned away, so why would this particular OP?

Typically Japan has always been about at least a decade behind the music scene when it comes to global music trends other than their own music trends created domestically. Heavy Metal like OP and EDs in Modern Anime aren't usually really truly heavy metal music most of the time. They come close to being heavy metal like but it's more in the lines of late 80s and early 90s indie alternative rock mixed with electronica under tones. Basically the type of music you would catch airing on MTVs "120 minutes" hosted by Dave Kendall in the late 80s and early 90s.

A perfect example of this would be Myth and Roid's "TIT FOR TAT" which would fall more in line with "Industrial music" which almost mimics the western group "Ministry" which broadly falls under 90s indie alternative rock more than being classified even close to Heavy Metal. Besides that Myth and Roid's sound broadly is way too "Poppy" for it to be actual metal. "TIT FOR TAT" comes closer to being pop music than Heavy metal too.

To be clear this is not to say there aren't actual Metal OPs and EDs in Anime just most of the time it's rare and everything else is actually closer to just 90s alternative rock in modern Anime.

If you think most OPs and EDs in modern Anime that feature Heavy Metal like music is actual Heavy metal then I got Primus for you....

Is it Metal? is it Jazz? is it Funk? is it Fusion? Who knows....

The One Shot OVA Cybernetic Guardians(Since it had a sequel hook but failed) had nearly the entire OST made by an 80s Japanese metal gang named Trash Gang. Here's the most notable soundtrack from the OVA, "I Can't Get Enough"

Here's another one; "Feedback"

There's also Devilman(The OVA from 1987, not the netflix one), with "Light It UP" and "The Show Must Go On" done by the Japanese metal band ANTHEM.

though they may not really qualify if you want specifically OP/EDs

Replying 3 years later here are some I have not seen written on this thread.

One Piece - Diamante theme
Yu Yu Hakusho - Preparation Theme
Chainsawman - Ending 3
So I'm a spider so what - Ending 2
Watamote - Dicapitated away (probably the heaviest thing I've heard in anime)

80's sounding metal
Fist of the north star - Asunaki Tabi/Tough Boy
Dragon ball - Wolf hurricane

Half Metal
Sabikui Bisco - Opening 1
Trigun - Scattered Rain

Demon Kakka and Takarano Arika «Jikuu no Mayoi Bito» from «Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou!»

Maejima Mayu «story» from «Isekai Ojisan»

Kitamura Eri «掌 -show-» from «Knights of Sidonia»

I do agree that MYTH & ROID is rather pop and too melodious for core metal. Its producer, Tom-H@ck is the leading composer of «K-On» songs.
«JINGO JUNGLE» from «Youjo Senki»
«ANGER/ANGER» from «Bubuki Buranki»
«HYDRA» from «Overlord II»
A symphonic metal / progressive rock taste tune «Endless Embrace» from «Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou»

OxT is a joint project of Tom-H@ck and the pop-star Ohishi Masayoshi.
«Clattanoia» from «Overlord»
«GO CRY GO» from «Overlord II»
«Silent Solitude» from «Overlord III»

Onmyo-za «Kouga Ninpou Chou» from «Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou Chou»

Wagakki Band «The Beast» from «Hanma Baki: Son of Ogre 2nd Season»

Maximum the Hormone
«Hawatari 2-oku senchi»(a 200,000,000 centimeter blade) from «Chainsaw Man» ED3
and as people mentioned, «DEATH NOTE», «Akagi», etc.

A punk breed artist Ohtsuki Kenji
«Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru» from «Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei»
«Ringo Mogire Beam!» from «Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei»

MELL «Red fraction» from «BLACK LAGOON»

At first, «Jormungand» came to mind, but after listening to them again, I realized that they are both just rock and roll than metal.
