What do you consider the worst adaptation in anime?

Despite me giving it a 5, the god of highschool without a fucking doubt. I mostly only gave it a mediocre score because I was literally only watching for fights but my god the adaptation is the actual worst. It literally does a disgrace to everything the manhwa does. Goh fans definitely deserved better after that...

The first 3 eps of The God of High School were pretty good, at least. Mindless fun.

Excluding the obviously bad The Promised Neverland s2, I'd say Kono Oto Tomare! because the worst offense you can to do a manga about music is making an anime adaptation with a 1/10 sound.

As a hardcore Umineko fan, I will have to say Umineko. DEEN was not prepared nor did they even try.

I actually don't hate the anime as much as most fans (I think I even rated it highly just because I've watched it many times and it has provided me with entertainment seeing my favorite characters animated), but, there is no denying the anime adaption is objectively horrible and the damage it did to the franchise. But even a competent studio would have their work cut out for them trying to create a good Umineko adaption considering it is a text heavy VN about debates.

Nanatsu no Taizai Season 3 and 4 if those count. TPN season 2 is an obvious choice as well as GOHS. Also I'm not sure because I have yet to see it but I have heard Toaru Majutsu no Index season 3 is a bad adaption, so Toaru fans tell me if this is correct or not.

Umineko and Berserk (2016-17). When you have such amazing source material, you basically have to try to mess it up. I’d love to see full unabridged adaptations of both. I would throw a ton of money at them to see a quality adaptation, (like Japanese blu ray prices for full adaptations of each. And given how much material there is that would likely be quite a bit)

I'm usually not familiar with the source material of an anime, but as for when I was and was disappointed...

Yozakura Quartet (2008) - The manga was and still is ongoing so they had to make up an ending. It was alright but definitely not as good as YOZAKURA QUARTET -HANA NO UTA- (although that series started in the middle of the story so I guess it wasn't perfect either). Looking back on this series now that the manga's come so far is certainly... interesting.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (1992) - I haven't actually read the original JoJo manga, but david production clearly understood JoJo's charm more than A.P.P.P. and it shows in both their adaptations. JoJo '92 just doesn't feel like JoJo

Pokémon Black and White - Pokémon's anime has always tried to distinguish itself from the original games but it's honestly kinda insulting that this series shares its name with the best Pokémon game. Why is Iris a tsundere? Who asked for that? I've heard it gets better once Team Plasma are introduced though (which I don't doubt because it would be pretty much impossible to make Team Plasma boring, lol)

Lol for real! I don't care how good a story is, if it has the repulsive art of Aku no Hana, the appeal of the anime will be about as enticing as cancer.

"Realism", if those monstrous character designs can even be called that, has little place in the animation medium where the creators can make any fantastical thing they can imagine happen. They should have just made it live action if they wanted the characters to look "real", rather than completely botching an anime adaption.

I certainly didn't expect to get everything right from the source material but what in the actual fuck is even that? Apparently, they were going with a more "realistic" approach to the premise but comes off as an abhorrent piece of junk..

I don’t see what they were going for with the realism. I imagine the production meetings - everyone sitting around a table communicating by showing their teeth and moving them around randomly

The artstyle used in Aku no Hana actually made it even better for me.
Just to mention that I've only seen the first 4 episodes.

I understand that some people legitimately find value in ugly art. I mean, The Simpsons must be popular for a reason. But I found it repulsive to look at.

The art style is indeed quite ugly. But that's what made Aku no Hana more immersive and unique. I wouldn't have been scared shitless if it had 'normal' art.

Aku no Hana's "ugly" or "bad" animation is coherent to the plot.
Even the directing in that anime tries to make you feel uneasy all the time.
I simply can't say that it's a bad adaption just because it won't follow the 2010s animation patterns.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

being ugly and not looking like every other anime are 2 vastly different concepts.

To me, Grand Blue. I specify "to me" because this is a bit personal, I enjoyed the manga quite a bit so despite the fact that I know a lot of anime with worse adaptations, this one annoyed me the most. Even those I know that hate the show and love the manga probably wouldn't agree with me that it's the worst adaptation ever, but I can't help it.

I just can't get over how bad that comedic timing is. Seeing a punchline get ruined because of the heavy metal music and graphic change coming in a whole 2 seconds before the punchline even starts puts me in physical pain.

From the ones I've seen and know the source material of, it's probably Corpse Party. The games were good and I enjoyed them a lot, especially for their atmosphere, but the anime only felt like a gorefest, as if someone just wanted to chain all the bad endings together. It was a huge disappointment.

while considered amazing by a lot of people, my hot take is that horimiya had a bad adaptation, and cloverworks only got away with it because horimiya is pretty episodic. i think the studio just missed out on so much character interactions, and really should've pushed for at least 24 episodes to get more content.

Terra Formars season 2

They changed artstyle and censored the fights a lot.

But The Promised Neverland season 2 is disastrous and Shaman King 2021 is quite bad too.

Persona 5 The Animation, I know that it's a 100 hours+ game, but there's nothing good about it other than the music, the animation is horrible, the story is super rushed, characters are ok at best. I hope that if they do a royal adaptation, they make it like the p3 movies or even the p4 anime, the english dub is great tho

DEEN/Stay Night
Not because it's the worst adaptation (not when the anime that doesn't exist exists), but because it represents everything wrong with most vn adaptations.

Dull pacing, skipping important scenes, copy-pasting chunks of dialogue that isn't even relevant to the story, mixing elements of every route and anime original bs, then you add the crappy animation and you get a trainwreck like this.

Honestly the only reason it has any defenders is because it was some people's introduction to the series, I can't believe how badly DEEN messed it up when they did the Higurashi anime that same year and it was quite decent.

Yeahyeah, from horrible pacing to anime original events. In retrospect my favorite thing about that anime is probably this piece of OST:

I think the turning point for me was when the 2nd season undid the 1st season's anime original ending, only to then tell an even worse anime original story.

It's a damn shame because I feel like the people who like Rozen Maiden really like it. I read the manga enthusiastically when I finally got around to it, and years later when I rewatched the anime I was hit with the feeling of 'damn.. this is not nearly as good as I remembered the first time around'.

They did Peach-Pit dirty.

Gonna expand on this and say Pokemon Sun and Moon, as both an adaptation and how it stands on its own. Probably one of my favorite stories/games in Pokemon (especially because of the Aether family drama) and they freaking butchered it. Out of all the games to make into a school slice of life, why the flip did they choose Sun/Moon?! Y'know, the game that was meant to be a new unique experience, with awesome new things and features like the travelling between different islands and Z-Moves, etc? They butchered Lusamine's character, sort of butchered Gladion (he's my favorite character in the game and I was so excited to see him in Team Skull (I always felt that that was a big part in his character arc/narrative) but was so disappointed that he wasn't or at least didn't join later in the anime), etc. The Pokemon League was horrible. While it's awesome that he won the League after so long, it would've been much better deserved in XY or DP. I could go on and on.

And I actually liked the Team Plasma stuff in the anime, if I'm being honest. Basically they had a Pokemon Control Machine and were going to try to and control Reshiram to destroy the world, etc. The showdown with them in the anime is actually pretty awesome, and everyone plays a part, even Team Rocket and Looker show up.

It is weird how stark the contrast is between Lusamine in the anime and the game. Normally they hit similar beats but they just made her basic Mom #3.

I'd say Love Hina

The anime does not even follow the plot of the manga and memorable key moments are not adapted.
In my opinion this is one of the very few anime I've seen where the voice cast does not even match the characters.

The anime created useless new comic relief characters.

In the OVA they even made the characters sing in the middle of the action like a Disney! In an ecchi anime!

In short this anime is a mess! If it was a homework I'd say to the director "You did not study at all! Do it again from scratch! You dunce!"

On reading Tokyo ghoul manga, I realised how bad the anime (especially second season) was. Other than the music, they fucked up almost everything. In root A they took everything good about Kaneki's character and threw it out the window. The entire final fight was made for him to look desperate to save everyone (and himself) and ended up tragically but instead the anime somehow managed to make him look edgier and came up with an ending that made no sense (just like the entirety of root A).

Do the koto performances last more than 5 seconds after episode 4? If that's the case, I admit I might have missed something
