Should cartoons copy anime?

If you are here, you likely think that anime is better than western animation. I'm one of them. I used to watch a lot of cartoons before falling out of love with them and switching to anime.
So, should cartoons try to be anime? I definitely think that they can learn from anime, but I remember that I didn't like it when cartoons copied anime when I liked cartoons. I don't know if I'll like it now, but I doubt I'll like it. Cartoons should be their own thing.

What's with the influx of threads concerning Western animation?

Anyway, I think Western animation should continue doing its own thing. Maybe some more shows with ambitious storytelling and themes would be welcome but copying anime isn't some golden goose to success.

They can try but they will fail. xD

Okay in seriousness....that just really isn't something that can be done...it's a cultural gap. No Western cartoon will ever be 'just like anime' and no anime will ever be 'just like a western cartoon'.

I prefer the anime art-style, but they should not copy it if they can`t draw it well. Not trying to be rude, but a lot of western artists are not good at character designs from what I seen of most anime inspired art. Anime art is often shunned in art classes partially for that reason.

Nah, why does everything gotta be like anime? Just let the Western animators do what they want. Please stop with all the "West this West that" threads. It's kinda cringe ngl.

It's all cartoon characters honestly....teachers don't like you drawing Disney stuff in classes either. xD

(went through that phase lol)

The reason is actually that they want you to 'broaden your horizon'. They think if you JUST stick to drawing cartoons, you won't learn things like still lifes, the right perspective, abstract art and other crap like that. lol

Some of the most popular western animation focus on comedy. Shows such as Family Guy, South Park, and Spongebob Squarepants were immensely popular back in the days.

When it comes to films, then Pixar and Disney productions tend to dominate.

However, I do think that there isn't much in the western animation scene for adults.

I think it would be an interesting idea for Western animators to get some inspiration from Japanese animators. But I think only a few Western style anime would be fine. I'm not looking for anime to dominate other styles of animation. It would lose it's uniqueness as a style if everyone tried to copy it.

I'm fine with more western shows being influenced by anime, but I don't think they should all just straight up copy anime. I'm not one of those people who hates the way western animation looks, and I'd prefer to keep my cartoons the way they are. I like my western shows ugy and cartoony as shit.

They don't have what it takes to create anime.
I mean they are good with shows like family guy, Simpsons and all, why not stick with them.

I know anime is seen as superior because it’s pretty and flashy and all that mess. But in reality it can be pretty overdone and repetitive in designs. Just continually doing the same semi realistic human body/face over and over again is repetitive. It can also be limiting to facial expressions, body movements and very wacky animation that the stuff like looney toons, adventure time or the amazing world of gimbal has etc. like almost all anime is the same artistically but in different fonts. anime is nice but it has many downsides and I don’t think we should just replace everything we have here with that like japan. They’re are many anime that would’ve been better without the Anime artstyle.

The problem is that alot of Western companies are obsessed with live-action and refuse to animate things. Why is there not a Watchmen animated series or a Kingdom Come animated series? If anything, they should copy seeing the potential in animating their properties.

Ironically, the most popular western cartoons are heavily inspired by anime.

No I don't want the animation industry suddenly looking the same across the board although cross cultural (is that the right word?) things like the big o and panty and stocking from japan and the last airbender from america are cool to see from time to time.

Not really, do you mean in terms of art or plot/writing? If so, neither to both. There needs to be variety, whenever you consider it "bad" or not compared to anime, and the same applies to anime.

Yes they should. They should begin by weaning off their obsession with 3D and "realistic grafix". Western animation should go back to making good 2D animation with decent background art and even proportionate anatomy like they used to until the 90's (Gargoyles, Jonny Quest, SWAT Kats, Thunder Cats, Mummies Alive, G.I Joe, The Centurions, Defenders of the Earth, even Disney saturday morning cartoons, etc). It's not even like there is no demand for them. The popularity of anime in the west is the proof of it.

No? Western animation is great in its own way. There are a lot of good western series. The only thing we should take from anime here maybe is the wide variety of genres. You can find anime from any genres, it's really a huge media.

It should have more shows with overarching plots and shows aimed at teens and adults (that are not about a dysfunctional family), and have different genres instead of just comedy or action.

I voted Kinda, I think that there should be a mix but there are a few major problems I have with it.

In Anime you get so many creative shows with really unique concepts and even when the character designs are generic they still look like they were designed with appeal in mind.
I mean ffs even Vinland Saga depicted what people actually wore better than shows and games that are marketed as '' historically accurate '' in the West ( plz staph with the stitched leather ) and it's still not entirely accurate and is very unrealistic, and so did Maria the Virgin Witch.
And their designs in Western animations aren't memorable at all and always feel so restrained and frumpy.

And as much as people complain about '' Anime boobs '', in Anime at least there is variation and there actually is a surprising amount of buff female characters.
And the Japanese don't even make a big deal out of it either, it's not turned into some huge marketing gimmick.

'' Frumpy '' is really a good term to describe how I view Western media.
It just has this feeling of being created with executives and marketing teams with Twitter open hovering over the shoulders of the creators that wants everything done based on trends and to be '' safe ''.

If anything I think JP anime should copy more of Western animation because they are so fluid lol. It's almost like watching 60fps videos, but I think it would suck balls because the artstyle used is so different.

Good to know. I hadn't heard about that, as I haven't really taken any art classes.

Just the visual part and nothing else.

I don't want to see some western cartoon characters explaining their own power to their foes or trying to talk no jutsu for like hours.

No, western animation copying anime would make the unique differences between the two go away. Stuff like Infinity Train and Bojack Horseman are great, they don't need to be like anime to be good. I also just enjoy the different writing styles between the two. Influence is fine, copying is not.

Artstyle-wise they're fine the way they are.

I wish we could see more stories that took influence from anime kind of like Star Vs., I remember liking that when I was younger

also more variety in the type of shows that we have (though that's not really an anime thing) "adult animation" has only a few type of shows and while that doesn't mean those shows are bad it'd be nice to see more types of things explored

I don't mind if they do, but they never really stick the landing when they try. Castlevania is very good, if RWBY was a lot more polished I could see other shows being made in the same vein and being more enjoyable. Probably don't have to talk about Avatar, that show's amazing.

Like Rinrinka said above though, this is only about visuals, Western cartoons copying anime tropes would be fucking awful.

The few things that Western animation should grab from anime are

Amount of variety in stories
Influx in animation production without copying the Japan's strict schedule

Anything else nah, especially comedy. Japan cartoons can't touch Western cartoons in comedy.

And I don't need anime's mostly shitty romance shows, forcing down "cute" into the shows, obsession with idols, the type of little things/situations that the characters would react to in the most unnecessary way, and sacrificing quality in production for the sake of making it fit weekly schedule. Thanks.

- Why not if they also try many other things?

I haven't watched much cartoons. Most of them had childish art due to being aimed towards young children (Tom & Jerry, Dexter's Lab).

But some others also came along with more mature art, such as Batman the Animated Series and Men in Black.

Both cartoons and anime have their own unique art styles. For example, in most anime, almost all characters have big eyes. Japanese companies must have a stereotypical reason as to why they portray people with such big eyes but applying the same concept to western animation might not be a great idea.

Why is this framed in the way like both industries already haven't influenced each other?

But no I don't really care either visually nor idk audience wise. Rather I'm missing 80's cartoons. Europe wise I like animated movies and short animations a lot more and find much easily things to watch or at least stuff I'm interested in compared to current anime. Marona's Fantastic Tale for example visually I think is a lot more interesting than animated movies that came that year from Japan.
