| waifu wars usually start when a girl that is very popular with the fans is getting the cold shoulder by the protagonist (as far as I observed) but it has other causes too. To give you an example, in Macross F there are 2 girls and one of them is Ranka Lee who loves the main dude and has many scenes with him but the dude doesn't love her as much and he prefers the annoying bitch called Sheryl. Of course fans have to retaliate, no sane person would prefer Sheryl over Ranka. In that moment Sheryl fans start to act like smartasses and no one likes that. I am not that active in waifu wars but I will give it my all when the next Bleach will start, so to all Rukia fans, you have been warned, no one will insult Orihime and get away. |

See, by seeing someone else support the other character/pairing, what spawns is the ugly essence of insecurity, to which immature individuals are especially vulnerable. No one likes to lose, no one likes to be wrong. If they think Ranka is best girl, then those who think Sheryl is best girl is automatically a threat to them being "right" in their tastes (even if no such thing exists). And by existing, this other fan/support of Sheryl is (un)consciously labeled an "enemy". More mature audiences don't really get affected by this, they've been through it. They realize this is inconsequential and that other people being different and liking different things is OK and has 0 impact on you. I hope I have been helpful. (Albeit, I can't really ignore lack of characterization when I rate shows since I try to rate based on the story/characterization efforts of the staff/writer rather than the often subjective enjoyability of a show's characters and while low effort characterization can be enjoyable, I often do not reward it.) |
