I thought on this topic for awhile. I don't think sad anime have to make you cry inorder to work because a show can make you sad or feel emotion and not cry. Let me tell you I didn't cry when I watched Clannad After Story, Your Lie in April, Anohana, Angel Beats, or A Slient Voice that being said all these anime still made me sad. So I don't feel that I have to be bawling my eyes out crying in order to get an emotional reaction out of me.

Nope, its been a long time since I cried. But if it makes me sad (or even feel emotion) I guess it's done a good job and I can appreciate that

Crying is just one of the many reactions to sadness. You don't need to cry to feel sad.

No, some just make me feel empty in a sense that I don't want to cry, I just feel really bad as if I've lost something.

No, it doesn't. Anime invoking emotion doesn't necessarily have to make you cry.

Same here, but I ended up questioning myself because I heard a lot of people cried while watching those animes; I've never shed a single tear but did feel pain within me.

The only anime that made me cry so far was Sora yori mo Tooi Basho.

Same, I wondered am I some kind of cold heartless person because I didn't cry watching any of those but they all still punched me in the feels.

I feel ya, man. I cannot even relate with people when they talk about how they cried over a scene.

For me when it comes to 'sad' anime, I never get sad at those since it's almost like a 'I see it coming already' kind of situation. Everything feels forced to create an outcome, and that lack of genuine development and amazing characterization takes it away for me. But I would say you don't have to cry at all to feel emotion for a sad anime or laugh hysterically for a comedy anime to love it.

Just for my case, I'll say that I feel sad when the anime isn't sad at all, but catches me off guard due to how well developed it was, and how emotional the climax hits with that development. Like with an Assassination Classroom.

Assassination Classroom is the only anime I bawled my eyes out crying to when I watched it.

I’ve never cried at an anime but so many shows have made me feel sad. The closest I’ve come to crying is when I watch Assassination Classroom. I got tons of goosebumps/chills and got sad but I just don’t cry when watching anime.

I cry very easily, so I'd say yes.
However sometimes I feel like looking back on a certain work makes me pretty sad when I think about who deserved better.

No, but it's a nice extra touch if it does. Usually the ones you least expect to make you cry can pull this off (Assassination Classroom is a great example). However, even the predictable ones can really do it, too, if the execution is on point. Violet Evergarden was a great example for that one (fuck anybody who felt nothing from that series).

Emotion isn't limited to sadness, y'know. But everytime I cry in an anime, like @Ryuseishun said (on God, that anime is heavenly), it's always a good thing to release the emotion rather than keep it inside.

Not like I do that in other things, no.

not exactly, no. i’m a bit of a crybaby, so it does happen but not always. as long as it pulls at my heartstrings it works. barefoot gen for example, never made me cry but god it made me feel things.

You got my back buddy, but I did shed a single tear when I was watching. The story is worth heartwarming.

"Do sad anime have to make you cry inorder to make you feel emotion?"
this just make me think of deku. the only way to express any sort of emotion for him is to cry.
I bet the audience goes "aha! he's crying, therefore expressing emotions. yes, I can totally comprehend his position and now identify with him." there's a word for this, which I won't mention.
there's a bunch of emotions that don't result in crying. and different levels of sadness. personally, I really like when a work can drag you into melancholy.

I mean, you don't have to cry in order to feel a sad emotion. I recently finished watching Shiki and I thought some of the deaths were sad as hell but I didn't cry. But I am surprised to hear that you didn't cry watching any of those animes, some of those episodes got me bawling.

They can make me cry as a bonus, but anime that really hit hard occupied my thoughts for hours or days and sometimes they gave me even a mild depression.

Whether or not something makes a person cry is largely down to a shed load of factors, chief among them though is the current emotional state of the individual.

For example, I finished re-watching Made in Abyss last night (in preparation for the BR release of Dawn of the Deep Soul) and cried when
But, the first time I watched it I didn't. It still resonated with me emotionally back then but man, lately I've just been more emotional about things. It comes and goes.

Obviously there are some scenes, music, songs, etc, that hit home based on my own life experiences and these tend to get me upset (sometimes in a cathartic good way, othertimes not so much) no matter my emotional state.

Hope this doesn't sound like I'm walking about getting ready to burst into tears every time a perfume advert comes on the telly, I'm actually a fairly well balanced type of guy, but I've always been a "softie" when it comes to empathy and emotion.

Not really it does seem force though to cry and feel the emotion. It will do if the show really affects naturally. Lol I think I'm explaining myself literally but it varies title to title that people can make you cry (some arc in gintama has made me cry)

Nah, you can feel upset without crying. I rarely cry with movies unless it's near the end of a show, usually, but a lot of sad anime isn't really that sad to even get me to do that imo.

Emotions are far more than just outwardly expressed, it's the internal emotions that are the genuine, more realistic ones. People can cry outwardly and pretend to do so, but you cannot pretend something hidden and internal, that really kicks your gut or heart.

Good point, that's a factor often not considered, but I take it into account when picking an anime. State of life (had a bad day at school or work, trouble with your friends or girlfriend, other worries)and how it affects your hormones can make or break it for some people. Personally, I noticed how I'm usually more vulnerable during the darker seasons.

No. For the ending of Banana Fish I didn't cry, and I'm not sure why. It hurt me a lot though. But whenever I think about it I start crying :| It's weird yeah, but pretending the alternative ending was real was helpful.

Grave of Fireflies is another one I didn't cry while watching. It made me feel really sad though.

Not truly cry, but it has to make my throat sore. Bonus points if I get a few tears.
But that's just based on the fact that I'm very emotional but also not the type to just fall for every melodramatic story, which means I have a very hard time feeling strong emotions when watching a show with a sad story.
So if a show just makes me a bit sad, it managed to bring this sad story to completion which is good, but that's not enough. If it actually makes me cry, then it totally won.

ill start this by saying i haven't cried in years and even when i get close to crying i stop myself
i feel like an anime can hit you hard and not make you cry. There's other emotions you can feel! If you think it needs to make you cry to make you feel anything then I feel like the anime is doing a bad job
(not sure if this makes any sense but i sure hope that it does)
