Well long time ago I was a big fan of AMVs like 8-9 years ago... But now i see that this art is dying and there aren't many platforms alive as there were in early 2010s... What are ur thoughts about it? And are there any good platforms left? |

pretty sure it's dying because copyright claims are more frequent (because fair use doesn't exist anymore apparently) |

I started making one this week as a joke for the first time in my life, so it's not dead in my heart at least. hell_jpeg said: pretty sure it's dying because copyright claims are more frequent (because fair use doesn't exist anymore apparently) This is probably the main reason as to why they're dying out. Although I never really enjoyed amvs myself, there's definitely people out there who do enjoy watching/making them and it's kinda sad that most people can't really post them due to copyright. Also even though "edits" are more popular these days, conventions were still running AMV competitions last year, so I guess that's still a relevant part of the culture? |

It's not dead but it isn't what it used to be anymore. I was apart of the community during it's prime years you could say (2006-2010). All the changes with Youtube really killed the community. The removal of community groups, removal of video responses, Anal copyright rules being introduced and the algorithm changes made it hard to find any AMV's of quality since they were buried underneath all of the trash tier ones. I don't know much about the community anymore due to being detached from it since 2013, but from what I can see editing communities exist through discord servers and the O.G Animemusicvideo site which is still around and active. As to where they post videos now days outside of uploading it to AMV.org I couldn't tell you. |

The rest of the creators who actually put effort in will be engulfed by shitty AMV's making it harder to find them Which is why the community groups and bulletin boards were a must cause it helped the people who couldn't float to the top get some kind of exposure, except it's much worse now. There's literally is no point in editing AMV's anymore cause you're not gonna get views anyway. Which is why a lot of people also quit as well. On top of videos getting region blocked due to copyright claims |

If you looking for more naruto v sasuke Linkin Park with a unregistered hypercam 2 watermark type AMV's then yes that culture is long gone. Though AMV culture is not gone, it evolved I would say. The emergence of Lofi/ future funk type stuff revitalized and moved the culture in a different way. I could name so many artists who might not be popular, but continuing the "craft". Also, I would like to point out the popularity and growing interest in these KPOP/character fancams I see all over twitter. Very AMV-esque, even it AMV's die they'll still live on through those for sure. I'm not sure about the copyright argument people are making. I don't think anyone is or trying to make a living off of making these edits. People do it for fun and to try and get a modest following. Hmm off the top of my head I could think of DEBOIN, Sunset Boy, King, Anime Vibe, Darusuke on YT. (I don't even like most of them put they are pretty popular). You gotta muck through more trash on insta and r/amv but I assure you they have good edits too. |

Makes me wonder what those 'edits' people mention here look like as i do not use any of "social media" platforms. I also don't quite get the argument about the Youtube algorithm. Back when i was into AMVs they were shared akin to "word of mouth" via reposts on various anime-themed websites and forums and by sending videos to each other's cell phones via bluetooth but i guess that was before the internet became as consolidated as it is nowadays. |

Most AMVs are abhorrent, only decent ones are usually made from the anime's OST. This example below is a great example of a classic show ruined by fruity-ass music. It's the AMV equivalent of putting 20 inch chrome rims on a Chevy Laguna. Here is a decent example using the OP. |

They are definitely not dead at anime conventions ((before the pandemic shut them all down anyway)). AMV contests tend to get the largest screen available at the convention and all of the audience seats will be filled up. One time they wouldn't even let me in when I got there a little late because they had reached capacity. It's an extremely popular event at conventions. |

haydenluvsanime said: No, you're just not looking hard enough for new ones. This. The youtube algorithm will make finding a good AMV difficult. ACE (BestAMVsOfAllTime), when he stopped, the free advertising for amazing AMVs halted as well. The good AMV editors are holding private competitions on private discords now but if you want to watch a good AMV, you need to actually find the good AMV editors that you did like and subscribe to THEIR channel. They're not going to advertise to you guys, especially when they don't make money or have to listen to random critiques. In other words, they don't care about you as audience members, they do it because they enjoy it and they like competing against each other. The good editors are friends only with good editors. You can go find them on your own time but they're not going to waste their time appealing to people that didn't take the time to search for them in the first place, even if you did like their content. |

AMVs are absolutely still a thing. Some do them just for fun but there is also a lot of competitions a lot of people take part in. For competitions, for obvious reasons, this was a little bit more quiet year, because people didn't feel as motivated to make videos for online competitions, but just in my country, in normal years there is like 10(I'm not exactly sure about this number, but around) different AMV competitions, with really high amount of effort put in every video and each having over 50 videos taking part (from which like 20-30 get in finals) (That is aroun 500 videos only from my country, only for competition reasons! of course some send the same video to multiple competitions, but a lot of them are new ones). There is also global competitions which are much bigger, but I am not too familiar with them. Shortly: At least in the AMV community I'm part of there's all the time a lot of new people coming. |

It is not dying. There are lots of AMVs at sites like BiliBili and like. You can find some of these videos at Reddit too. Youtube is just killing western audience with their copyrightshit which is really shame. Someone should invent Youtube again, who wouldn't give shit about copyright holders.
