| It's always fascinating to watch how self-absorbed americans are and how little they know about the rest of the world :>. First of all I'm pretty sure it's more mainstream in a bunch of southeast asian countries neigboring japan, like south korea for example. Secondly, european countries like Italy and especially France started licensing and publishing manga 15+ years before the US saw its first manga and France still has probably the strongest, or at least most diverse manga market in the west. Even with anime there were a lot of 'mainstream' titles airing on TV in a lot of european countries ever since the 80s and 90s, not too far behind america. I grew up with probably a good dozen japanese animations for children being on TV alongside european and american cartoons. Anime isn't a monolith that can either be mainstream or not, there's been mainstream titles and niche titles for decades now as well as niche titles and that won't change anytime soon. I'm baffled that you just saw anime merch at a general story for the first time because I'm pretty sure Pokemon, Dragonball or Sailor Moon merch has been around, and fairly visible since the 90s. That really isn't anything new, not where I live and most likely not in america either. Maybe you live in the boonies and it just got to your town, but it's not a new phenomenon at all. |

| I've found anime blu rays in carrefour (aka french walmart) in some countries but not in mine so I guess it's more popular in some countries and less in others. |

| Manga makes up a huge percentage of the German comic market and we get stuff well before any English translations come out in a lot of cases, particularly ecchi and *especially* BL. Hell, the bookstore nearest to me back home had an entire separate section for BL manga. We have some magazines and stuff too. We got a really dope special edition release of Yosuga no Sora and there's some series like Sky Wizard Academy that I only picked up because I saw it in magazines at the grocery store. France probably beats out America in general, though. Don't think my country does, but France is pretty prominent. In manga France definitely crushes it, and Germany probably does too. | It’s very popular in certain parts of China. I’ve also heard that it’s popular in a France as well. As for where I live, Australia, it’s not insanely popular but it does have its place in pop culture. |

| In Malaysia, you can find at least 2 or 3 anime fans, and some classes has a group of anime fans too. The older you are, the more anime fans you can find, well for students at least. (and JoJo memes are pretty popular for the meme bois, even non anime fans) |

| More than 1/3 anime overseas profit come from China, SK, and Taiwan alone. Europe and north America is another 1/3. Since there is few data for anime. France top manga sales can be around 300 per volumek, US manga however only 120k at best per volume. US whole internal market probably at the same size as Italy at best. The only one make them bigger than ot look is that they are the center of anglosphere license holder. |

| Here in the UK we don't really get as much as say, France or Italy, but like the US it's pretty much becoming a more "accepted" form of entertainment. Though i wish shops like Waterstones would have more of a selection of manga, rather than just one small shelf of it at the back. |

İ tend to put them together but even then as far as I can remember anime has always been extremely popular on french TV notably with the TV show le club Dorothée who would be known for showing anime shows since the late 80s and later on channels entirely dedicated to anime like the wierdly named mangas who had a catalogue of both well known shows like DBZ and more obscure ones like galaxy express, ie naki ko, haidi and more. İf I'm not mistaken there was also a mecha show named Goldorak that was aired in France since the late 70s and also there is the former french animated studio DİC who would produced in collaboration with TMS studio and studio Pierrot anime like Ulysses 31 and the mysterious cities of gold in 1981 and 82, something that both Netflix and crunchyroll only started recently. |

| It is weird how in Brazil it was easier to find anywhere stuff related to anime AND sentai/tokuhatsu back in the 80's and 90's, than now. Because that time these series were very popular in open TV and targeting the audience of kids. What was on TV, was also in stuff like in toys or stationery stores. But then the Fire Nation attacked, i mean, the concept that commercial animation or shows for kids are harmful for the devenlopment of children (and parent's pockets). Did it happened in any other country? Open TV avoiding to exhibit ANY kind of anime or cartoons? |

| Yes, Anime is really popular in France, and it started way long before its explosion in the US: in the 80s and the 90s, a kids TV show called Club Dorothée was broadcasting the vast majority of cartoons from Japan (Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Saint Seiya, Hokuto no Ken...)! |

| Western Europe is really into anime and manga, especially France which is a weeb country, basically All Leclerc hypermarket (kinda the French equivalent of Walmart alongside Carrefour) have a separated store called "Espace culturel" (Cultural Space) where they sell...well, everything (books, comics, video games, manga, anime DVDs and even goodies), and you can find a bunch of things there I live in the countryside and in the nearest Leclerc near me, I took this picture of a shelf in the manga section (there were 3 other shelves like this one). Considering the city it's in is ~22,000 inhabitants only, it's pretty nice  |
