During the Cyberpunk 2077 Night City Wire: Episode 1 livestream on Thursday, an anime series titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was announced. The anime will take place in the same universe as the game, featuring an original story. The 10-episode anime series will debut on Netflix in 2022.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells a standalone story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.

Hiroyuki Imaishi—the director behind Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill—will helm the series at animation studio Trigger, with assistant director Masahiko Otsuka (Promare, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt). Otsuka is also in charge of the screenplay alongside Yoshiki Usa (SSSS.Gridman producer). You Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia) and Yuuto Kaneko (BNA animation director) are designing the characters.

Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill video game franchise) is composing the original score. Hiromi Wakabayashi (Uchuu Patrol Luluco) is serving as the creative director.

Developed by CD Projekt, Cyberpunk 2077 adapts the 1988 tabletop role-playing game, which is scheduled for release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 19.

I don't think there will be any space or alines this time around but there will definitely be fanservice which it makes complete sense. It's a mature setting and you get plenty of fanservice in all the game trailers as well anyway. haha

People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

Seriously Trigger it's the most overrated studio I have ever seen, it does nothing but live under the shadow of gainax, try to be Gainax, imitate Gainax. Everyone assumes that his anime will be good, despite the fact that he made garbage like darling in the franxx, kiznaiver or that bootleg of gurren lagann called Promare or worse irrelevant anime like BNA
it's time for people to remove the band from their eyes and see how insignificant and pathetic this studio, imitating another revolutionary studio does not make you revolutionary but quite the opposite.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, all of Trigger's original projects after Kill La Kill have been disappointing, so their take on an established setting could feel fresh, but on the other, i don't really find Cyberpunk 2077 attractive ever since they stepped away from the concept shown in the the announcement trailer and have been pandering to "woke" crowd in promotion material. Netflix involvement is also worrying.

Trigger’s going to be bringing their A-game into this judging by the Staff lineup and that’s always calling for hype!

Looking forward to this!

Considering it's him who's directing it'll probably be gurren lagann 4 with a cyberpunk setting, and in 10 episodes, not really a good sign imo.

What are you even talking about? Trying to imitate Gainax? They are Gainax. Literally most of the studio including the main people directors, assistants, animation directors etc. moved to Trigger. Promare copy of Gurren Laggan? More like paying homage to Gurren Laggan since Promare was created and directed by the same guy that came up with and directed Gurren Laggan aka Imaishi. BNA was good and let's not forget when they literally "saved" anime with Kill la Kill ,around that time anime was in a pretty bad state until they came around.

While I like Trigger, I must agree with those voicing their concerns (especially ones regarding the episode count and Netflix association).

But I really do feel that their style would be perfect for something like this, and the staff is also super promising. My worries regarding the game itself shouldn't apply here, so I'm a little excited.

Well Cyberpunk has basically canonical futas in their promo art/ads of the world and I believe as a game mechanic lol. CD Project Red isn't shy about including stuff like that in their games by just looking at the Witcher. I assume to keep it to the overall tone of the franchise it's going to be more like you see in HBO content rather than what we see as typical anime fanservice.

Still more serious sci fi is a good thing for the industry. Plus if it is good and Cyberpunk 2077 ends up being good as well it could be a good marketing opportunity to bring more new people into the medium. Hope for the best. I do agree with some here though 10 episodes is kinda short unless those are elongated episodes. I bet it's going to be a standalone story with no plans for a sequel that said it isn't impossible to craft a good one in that time but I would prefer a 2 cour show.

i can't be the only one Skeptical even despite the level of staff working on this like i'm totally down for the best of Triggers A team doing some sci fi but it's using a game IP that as of now isn't even out yet for a anime that won't be out for 2 years! that's a long ass time and a lot can change looking at 2020 in retrospect , bet half the people hyped for this won't even remember it till then unless they plan on promoting it non stop.

i want it to be good but just having a visual art all i can be like well that's kinda cool i hope it's good lol

I want to be excited, but at the same time, Cyberpunk these days isn't as artistic as it used to be, and it's getting way closer to the entertainment side of things.

Cyberpunk 2077 may be a wonderful game, but story-wise, it won't bring new concepts, it won't explore deep themes regarding tech and society, it will just be... entertainment.

I guess there's nothing wrong with all that, but the future of cyberpunk as a genre still concerns me.

You do realize the man who created cyberpunk is co writing the story, for the game right?

Also cyberpunk just like any other genre will evolve and become more refined. Just cause it's entertaining doesn't mean it isn't what it is, cyberpunk.
