I have noticed in many anime (and manga) that kuma (bears) are feared very much
Any reason for this? I mean other ferocious animals barely (no pun intended) get the same treatment...

well. They are the largest land mammals in Japan. I guess that's probably the reason why they are represented as "a frightening beast not to be messed with!"

There probably isn't anything more dangerous than them in japan. These things are huge and strong. Scary.

There is a valid fear to bears, average land speed of 30mph (48kph), can climb, run, and swim faster than humans. Firearms are very restricted in Japan. But imagine if one got out of a zoo. Draw a 30 mile radius circle around that zoo. BOOM THATS BEAR TERRITORY.

ask your self first, aren't afraid of bears? can you face a wild animal like bears in the open?
as to why in japan people fear them the most because they are the most dangerous in Japan.
in Australia, they probably fear crocodiles or snakes.

Are they seriously portrayed as scary?
What I’m envisioning is cute teddy bear Rilakkuma, who would never harm a fly.

Realistically speaking, bears are only cute when they're behind some bars or inside a monitor.

my friend's family was attacked one night by a ferocious bear, they were in a tent, somehow they ran away when they heard his moans to the car, but the bear attacked the car (it was a poor dacia) till it got bent. Bears are nasty creatures

Bears are super cute! I love how their butt gets all jiggly when they run. Wish I could hold a bear and hug it and kiss it's nose, but I don't want to be eaten alive.

I think bears are portayed as cute in anime more often. But I'm not sure, I have no statistics on that.

Ever seen a hairless bear?

That's reason enough to fear them imo

Isn't it the norm for Russians to love bears though?

Brown bear is our national animal but bears are still criminally underrated here. No one wants to send them love and kisses...

Maybe you could hug a baby bear? I mean MMA fighter Khabib was able to wrestle a bear as a kid and I imagine that's more dangerous than hugging a bear lol

Adding "and then a bear showed up" to nearly any situation is guaranteed to make that situation worse.

I was out hiking and had just sprained my ankle, and my phone was getting no reception. And then a bear showed up.

I was behind enemy lines, my squad mate was injured, I was just barely dragging him to safety. And then a bear showed up.

I had just won the lottery, had quit my shitty dead end job, and was taking a trip on my new private jet. And then a bear showed up.

Bears are bad news.
Shoot first, think never.

Looks like a human weirdly enough.I´m pretty sure the resemblance would be uncanny if they stood on two legs.

Most terrifying way to depict bears in any media I've seen, even surpassing the horror movie Grizzly of the 80s. Though in general Japan has a low rank in animal rights, considering they still allow dog fights.

This thread compels me to point out that one episode of Z/X Code Reunion where there's a scene involving a character running away from a bear, which is accompanied by a notice saying that in real life it's a bad idea to run from a bear.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

Not all that surprising, considering that bears are one of mankind's primal fears and one of the few creatures (along with sharks, big cats, wolves, alligators/crocodiles, and some snakes, among others) that threaten our status as apex predators. As they say about bears, (with questionable accuracy on the first two counts), "If it's brown, lie down, if it's black, fight back, if it's white, say goodnight." Even the word "bear" reflects these fears:

A great example of [taboo deformation] is the word “bear,” in English. “Bear” is not the true name of the bear. That name, which I am free to use because the only bear near where I live is the decidedly unthreatening American black bear, is hβ‚‚Ε•Μ₯tαΈ±os. Or at least it was in Proto-Indo-European, the hypothesized base language for languages including English, French, Hindi, and Russian. The bear, along with the wolf, was the scariest and most dangerous animal in the northern areas where Proto-Indo-European was spoken. “Because bears were so bad, you didn’t want to talk about them directly, so you referred to them in an oblique way,” says Byrd.

Hβ‚‚Ε•Μ₯tαΈ±os, which is pronounced with a lot of guttural noises, became the basis for a bunch of other words. “Arctic,” for example, which probably means something like “land of the bear.” Same with Arthur, a name probably constructed to snag some of the bear’s power. But in Germanic languages, the bear is called…bear. Or something similar. (In German, it’s Bär.) The predominant theory is that this name came from a simple description, meaning “the brown one.”

In Slavic languages, the descriptions got even better: the Russian word for bear is medved, which means “honey eater.” These names weren’t done to be cute; they were created out of fear.

It’s worth noting that not everyone was that scared of bears. Some languages allowed the true name of the bear to evolve in a normal fashion with minor changes; the Greek name was arktos, the Latin ursos. Still the true name. Today in French, it’s ours, and in Spanish it’s oso. The bear simply wasn’t that big of a threat in the warmer climes of Romance language speakers, so they didn’t bother being scared of its true name.

pretty random necro

but anyway, bears are not too uncommon in japan, there are some places where you have to be legitimately wary of them

obviously the apex predator in your backyard is usually going to be more frightening than the one separated by a couple oceans

Am I dumb enough to not thinking that's a human cosplaying strange-looking bear or that's really a bear?
