This episode was great. Probably best so far. So Lain's other personality is starting to show. And what the hell was that power in the end? O_O

Yip, best episode so far. At least some thing made sense now. I guess the power in the end was a comand linked by the wired. She comanded the guys to leave and her Navi probably fended them off. I guess the men that observed her resemble some kind of hacking attack.

So now its confirmed that the wired and the real world are connected and they're connected a lot at that.
-It seems that games acquired through the wired can also sink into reality
- that game reminded me of Arena and Daggerfall from the TES series
- Lain seems to have a hand in the knights some how because it showed her in that game chasing after that kid just like the little girl was.

1. Nothing is confirmed. It's possible though.

2. It's basically resembles any dungeon crawler. To me it reminds me very much of eye of the beholder and the labyrinth screen saver from Windows 98 OS, lol.

3. I don't know about that. Maybe the person that everyone seems to know as Lain. Maybe it's just Lain trying to find out about the Knights and got mistaken for one.

also curious if tht guy at the beginning was wired when he shot up cyberia, and what that accelerating drug thing has to do with all this

Maybe it has to do with a mix of the Psyche chip and that drug from the beginning, but it does seem like the lines between reality and the Wired is blurring. Perhaps the drug/chip connects people's brains directly to the Wired, so they can connect to the game without physically being in front of their Navi and they start having trouble separating what's real and what's not. Then accidents like at Cyberia, suicides, and what appeared to be the boy killing the little girl in this episode, etc.

Still, I don't know how Lain was able to break that guy's goggles! Maybe she somehow hacked into it with her mind through the Navi and caused it to short circuit and blow up? Either way, she's definitely not the same girl from the beginning, but still not the "other" Lain either. Maybe she's slowly becoming the other Lain. Her dad seems to know what's going on though....

And where in the world did she get all that equipment for her Navi to modify it?? Her dad maybe? But he didn't act like he knew much about it, if anything. That looks like a ton of expensive hardware! โ˜… 4/5

So...pretty much every episode has one or more homicide in it. Her parents seem weird as fuck. My mum would've literally killed me if she found out I made my room that much wired. I guess her sister is the only normal person in her family. Lain has got some SERIOUS issues. And what was with that bullet charge? e.e
So much twisted.
Looking forward to having all my questions answered :D

It's a reference to Knights of the Lambda Calculus

Actually, the series is chock full of references that might be really obscure now (they were "merely" obscure at the time)... If you're familiar with the mid-late-'90s history of Apple Computer, you'll see a lot of stuff there.

Someone mentioned in an earlier thread that they liked the way light and shadow are handled in this anime. I loved this scene for that reason, with the glow from the Navi lighting Lain's face. (Her dad is so creepy at this point. Really curious about him.)

Lain's papa is so creepy but maybe he knows what's in the Wired and is watching out for his daughter. Papa Lain is a computer geek after all, he's into all that deep web shit.

So the Knights are a sort of religion. I'm guessing the Men in Black in this episode are monitoring entities in the deep web/The Wired.

Well there isn't very much dialogue in this anime and the few words that are spoken are almost every time just confusing. Lain herself certainly is undergoing a character change and the story is probably centering around the 'psyche processor', which has yet to be explained in detail.

Sigh. Too much mystery, not enough substance to go around. Also, releases a lot of tension from the show when your protagonists screams "Go away!" and whatever she wants, happen.

But it's okay. As weird and convoluted as it is, I'm still liking it.

A great episode. It's now confirmed that Wired can interfere with the real world (officially). I guess these video games are like a middle ground between the wired and the real world. Lain is starting to act creepy but I loved this side of her. And she seems to be able to talk directly to other people through the wired which is interesting. I wonder will we get a proper explanation about any of this.

For my Lain was looking for information about the game, hacked and found that case, probably spoke to him from his cell phone that he destroyed.

(is what I think, nothing is confirmed XD, since it can be interpreted in several ways)
The question isn't "What anime do you like?" That is merely a list.
The question is "Why do you like it?" That tells a story. Your story.

Damn! What the hell is going on!

...

So I'm really engaged right now. Really intrigued and anticipating the unraveling of these mysteries. I have a few hypotheses I just want to throw out right now.

- Wired Lain is overtaking IRL Lain
- Lain's "parents" are actually Wired Agents sent to support her/spy on her, and are her adoptive parents
- Lain's "parents" are Mika's real parents; Mika is IRL Lain's adoptive sister
or
- Real Lain was overtaken by Wired Lain and her parents know this/support this. Real blood connection to Mika
- The stalkers are Japanese Intelligence Agents (good guys) looking to stop a cyberterrorist (Wired Lain)
- Wired Lain is becoming a more dominant personality; reassures Dad that the real Wired Lain is still in control (ready for the mission?)

This episode was a very mysterious one.
The case of the kid being followed by that "Lain"...
There can be two Lains or I'm just crazy?
And that enigmatic little girl in this episode was very creepy for a moment.
The game called PHANTOMa looks like a game put in the reality or something like that.
It's curious that in the start of this episode Lain said that no one is connected, while in the second chapter she tell to the man in Cyberia that all are connected somehow.

Ok, so there's the Wired, which is... a world. (?) Also Lain goes from Ayanami knock-off to some kind of more energetic girl, not to mention she claims "no one is connected" in the beginning of the episode, but in an earlier episode she told the guy in Cyberia that everyone is connected somehow. Multiple Personality Disorder much...

Also, Lain's family seems to be make-believe. Question is what do they want from her.

Lain's personality seems to develop as she upgrades her navi. Maybe the computer is linked to her directly and controls her personality. The more powerful the navi is, the more human Lain becomes. Maybe the mom's navi hasn't been upgraded yet which is why she is so lifeless and robotic.

Also, I though this was interesting. During the last minute, they showed this image of Lain's navi.

On the front of it, it says HAL POWER 5000. This must be a reference to the HAL 9000 from the 1968 movie called 2001: A Space Odyssey. HAL 9000 was a sentient computer that is mostly shown throughout the movie as a camera lens with a reddish dot. HAL malfunctions and basically goes psycho, trying to kill people.

The name HAL may actually refer to the computer giant IBM. If you take the letters of IBM and shift them one letter to the left in the alphabet, you get HAL. Stanley Kubrick said this was just a coincidence though, but it's still interesting.

Anyway, I may go watch 2001: A space odyssey again before finishing this series!

Damn! Do her parents know everything?? What's with this sudden & official personality swap? The hell is going on with that little child girl? Wah ;w; I've gotten so far and literally none of my questions have been answered, just teased while adding MORE unanswered questions! She turns from technophobe to a hacker through some alternate personality? Her Navi is HUGE by this point. Holy f**k ;w; and her family is like totally chill about it. I wonder where she even got all the parts for the upgrades from... is her father funding all of this? The plot STARTS to make SOME sense towards the end of the episode, but it leaves whatever confusing mess happened up until now TOTALLY unexplained!

Does anyone know about the scene when Lain chases a phantoma game player, in my opinion the game's graphics are somewhat similar to the 'Sad Satan game' that comes from the deep web, is there anyone aware of the connection between the two? 0_0 I'm very curious

I'm still confused ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ Anyway, the navi that Lain built was really cool. Maybe his dad provided him the tools.

Lain's personality has changed and it seems that she can really go through the other people's navi(?) as well. The line between the wired and real world seems to shrink and Lain seems to have a huge control over wired.

So the game is mixing in the real world and that guy really killed a person/child? The game also make other people die.

So who are the knights?

With how drastic Lain's personality change was, it felt like I was watching someone else entirely instead of the quiet and aloof girl I knew from the past few episodes. It's very ominous that her room gets more and more cluttered with tech the deeper she gets invested in using the Wired. Her online personality's taking over and it's doing it really fast.

A lot of people are confusing the virtual world for the real one way too severely. I guess that the Wired's decided to increase its influence on reality more now.

It's probably because of the Psyche Processor that she's able to access the emails of strangers and communicate with complete strangers as if she's talking right in their heads when she's using her Navi. She can even use her rig to control other devices from afar with such effectiveness that she can have them malfunction if she commands it which is pretty creepy.

Lain is so different from when we first met her, and it's only 4 episodes in... Something's happening to her, but I can't really understand what.
What's even more intriguing is that if I recall correctly, she's been acting weird since what happened at the club, with the guy going insane. At first I thought she might've developed PTSD (she seemed to be pretty shocked after all) but now I really don't think that's it...
Plus, in this episode the guy talking to who I guess is the other Lain mentionned that she is an adult.
Could all this have something to do with the whole thing about the mix of games, with a game for teens/adults having been mixed up with a kids' one ?
There's also the fact that Lain appeared to the guy who shot a little girl, does that confirm her as being part of The Wired ? It might also be confirmed by Lain's power in the end of this episode (it reminded me of the movie Carrie).
But the most interesting point is that Lain actually doesn't seem to have changed, but more to gradually be "possessed" by this other Lain everyone is talking about.
I'm really confused, but I can't wait to find out what all of this is really about !

Guess I shouldn't feel glad given the reasons (her getting more involved/obsessed with the Wired) but seriously, I'm really enjoying this more talkative side of Lain.

Well, things are getting weirder and weirder but I can't help but feel more intrigued with each passing episode. So the Wired is, more or less, seeping into reality and as a result, more and more disturbances are occurring around the city. In particular, one involving a student killing a little girl but with the guy thinking he was playing this video-game called Phantoma. Game which somehow ended up connecting with another game played by preschoolers.
Anyways, my guess is that the little girl was also playing her respective video-game and since it was said that Phantoma was unintentionally linked to it, she ended up encountering the distressed guy. Of course, with both of them not knowing they were actually wandering around the city. It seems that the boundaries between reality and the virtual world are getting closer and closer, uh?

Aside from that, it also seems that Lain can somehow affect reality now. Probably due to the Psyche chip and the deep connection she has with the Wired so I guess she will have full control of these new "powers" once she becomes one with this "virtual" world. Idea she seems rather interested in, I must say.

P.S.: Goddamn, imagine paying the electricity bills of Lain's house.

This episode has psychological elements of the in-separation of the wired world from the real world. For many people, this is a reality, or a result of the longitude living in the wired world caused due to the(weird) Navi OS system. They see Lain as a God who governs, a god who asks the wrongdoers, a god who evaluates the actions.

The "Knights maybe made this god," and they now want Lain to take it over. They gave lain the moderator power to govern the wired world, as She can even malfunction the Navi or operator of other users.

This is how I see Lain. Till now.
