What future anime trends do you foresee in the 2020's?

Feels weird to say we're heading into the 20s.

My takes

1. Isekai is going nowhere for a while, and will remain as strong as ever especially in the first half of the decade, as sequels of already successful isekai adaptations come out. Might decline a bit in the second half in favor of some other trend and for me I have no issue with this since it's my fave genre.

2. Rom-coms and rom-com harems become more numerous. The popularity of shows like Quints and Kaguya will not go unnoticed.

3. Further rise in number in shows aimed at female audiences. More male idols, yaoi, female-aimed sports shows, otome game adaptations. Light novels aimed at female audiences will also grow. However, fans of more traditional Shoujo and Josei manga will be disappointed as these will be ignored in favor of stuff aimed at the established female otaku audiences.

4. CGDCT shows will not be huge, but we will continue to see a steady supply of a couple per season, as it is now.

5. Anime movies will rise in number. Much of the serious drama and romance adaptations and the more arthouse stuff will be in form of movies.

6. Shaft will never reach the heights of the past decade and a bit again. However, they will continue to make high quality Monogatari entries for a good part of the decade.

7. It might take a while, but Kyoani will recover and become industry leaders once again. The loss of talent will hurt, but Kyoani's foundation is very solid and there will always be talent who would love to work there.

What do you think will happen in the 2020s?

Subversive Isekai shows, like what Shield Hero was supposed to be before becoming more typical, and like the parody shows like KonoSuba and Cautious Hero. What better way to make an Isekai while elevating yourself above the typical Isekai garbage than by making a parody, or incredibly subversive show?

People are getting sick of the very generic Isekai shows, I've even seen many people from the Isekai fanbase going against the most generic shows ever since they started getting more inspired takes on the rebirth premise, like Ascendance of a Bookworm. Hopefully we'll get more Isekai shows with actual creativity put into it rather than all the copy-paste adaptations we've gotten, even if I don't like the genre I'd be happy if we can finally get rid of the most generic examples at the very least. For example I don't like Shield Hero, but I'd take it over Kenja no Mago any god damn day of the week.

I am expecting to see widespread integration between 3DCG and regular 2D animation. The CGI will start off bad and in the eyes of fans probably mess up many shows but will eventually reach the levels of western CGI during 2005-2010.

Besides this I am expecting a large shift towards sequels and anime more catered to the general east asian market instead of just Japan, as the declining population of young people in Japan will hurt the domestic market.

Your predictions make sense to me. I could see all of those coming true. Here's a couple of mine!

I think there's a decent chance that cyberpunk/futuristic anime will start becoming more and more prevalent (maybe even oversaturated, but who can ever tell with trends), it might just be me but I feel like we're seeing the subgenre growing at the moment.

The 2020s will be the decade that fully CG anime become commonplace, and we start seeing some serious masterpieces in 3D (not to hate on shows like Beastars or Houseki no Kuni, they're great, but they're oddities). With 3D anime becoming more and more gorgeous hopefully there's less prejudice towards CG.

Attack on Titan season 4, whether you like it or not, will take FMA:B's crown and sit at the top of the MAL charts for several years, helped by the fact that MAL will implement anti-botting measures. Towards the end of the decade people will complain about how there aren't any new anime that can live up to the classics like AOT and KnY.

Millepensee will make an anime that people like (this is the hottest take of my life).

An anime movie will win an academy award, demonstrating how anime is becoming more and more mainstream. We'll continue to see anime movies pop up in theaters worldwide.

Boku no Hero Academia Shippuden.

I think we will see more of Isekai and possibly more Isekai as well, I suspect that there will be more Isekai too.

Isekai are going nowhere for a while, a lot of Isekai are garbage but there are still some manga for Isekai and a lot of sequels are coming out to like shield hero which is really popular and amazing show in my opinion, that time I got reincarnated as a slime, konosuba, all of these specifically are really good. Desperate attempts of a good isekai are everywhere just keep calm and drop them all. Also shounen will be there forever, along with shoujo...they will always remain if you ask me.

more CGI since there is animator shortage crisis going on and computer animation only needs few animators compared to 2D traditional animation

Since I don't watch currently airing Anime, or Anime with summaries I'm not interested in (which's the case with almost everything), I don't really care. One of the only new things I will watch next year will be the "Umibe no Etranger"-movie.
I bet nothing will change, but you can never know.

Hopefully more Dragon Ball content, and Bleach anime returning.

Also, sci-fi / cyberpunk revival.

I'm anticipating a new Jpop/Kpop trend for a whole new level of cringe the likes of which only twitter has seen. And we have enough cringe in the anime community as is.

Self-aware battle shounen? We already got the self-aware isekai and self-aware harem.

I think we're going to see a lot more faceless MC's. We're already seeing the beginning of it with characters like Goblin Slayer, that guy with the gun for a head and next season's got Somali and the Forest Spirit. Usually, these are gonna come with some kind of parent-child dynamic, usually father-daughter, as they'll also have a younger female companion who's gonna be the emotional core of the story so the faceless main-man is free to be stoic, badass and brooding.

That's IF MAL actually implements those measures, a lot of us have been wanting them for ages now to no avail, we might get lucky and get some changes either in the 2030's or 40's when the website gets its shit together.

Although I've heard great things for what the manga has in store for S4, it'll be close, definitely overtaking S3P2

The good thing is that although I just entered the 30s, I'm re-entering the 20s again tomorrow :>.

What was the question again?
I probably regret this post by now.

I definitely agree with this. If it’s pulled off right, it’ll be the FMAB of this decade easily. Can’t wait for marley..

I believe there will be an isekai about a human dismantling a truck, and then Truck-kun will be transported to another world and will thus begin a new era of mecha isekai with Truck-kun as MC obviously.

More Yuri anime and hopefully it can also be paired with other genres besides just traditional slice of life and school settings. Genres like magical girl, harem (yes i would like a yuri harem), idol, fantasy, sci-fi, mecha, etc.

A yuri harem would complete my life. Like imagine a Yuri oregairu

I hope so too. The cyberpunk era was so good. I'd honestly take cyberpunk and neo-noir animes over than most isekais tbh.

Wouldn't it be amazing to see an anime about truck-kun getting smashed by wrecking ball-kun and getting isekai'd to a universal world where he encounters everyone he smashed and has to battle them, that would be a top contender for the new decade.

I have a feeling shojo isekai, particularly the reinacarnated as an otome game villainess trope, are going to be a trend, since they already are in light novels.

More long-running cour based shounens, instead of weekly for hundreds of episodes.

More 3D stuff like Beastars and Houseki no Kuni

Netflix gets involved more and more, for better or for worse.

Tons more anime or anime-esque shows being produced elsewhere(castlevania, Avatar stuff)

We get Nerve Gear by 2022 and millions of weebs get trapped in virtual reality and fuck the NPC waifus.

There will be more isekai parodies that makes fun of themselves. More sports anime, harems that are actually good (I mean not the generic ones with a bland MC who has a personality of a cardboard), like Oresuki.
