In this post, I want to talk about anime series that basically nobody knows a thing about or are practically "nonexistent" among anime fans. I don't mean shows such as Baccano, Spice & Wolf, Deadman Wonderland, Katangatari, or other such titles as these titles are fairly well known (Baccano, Deadman) or just very strongly adored (Katanagatari and S&W) as well as SLIGHTLY in the middle. Whenever I ask something like this, people almost always name anime such as these that most anime fans are already aware of. While I don't mind these answers, I want some new answers about ACTUAL anime that have just somehow gone up and walked out of the anime world. I mean anime such as Shion no Ou, Neuro Nougami, Nogizaka no Himitsu, World Conquest Zvezda Plot, Chrome Shelled Regios, Rental Magica, Tegami Bachi, Penguindrum, etc etc These kinds of titles. |

While I've only ever seen it mentioned once (when it was recommend to me), I think it's likely going to be well known by quite a few people as it's from Shaft, but I recently saw Rec (literally the last show I finished actually). From 2006, it's super low budget, half-length episodes, and only 10 episodes long (one of those being a special that sometimes called ep 7.5 out of 9). Really cozy little romance. Has a very intimate, personal feel to it. Story is solidly told, even if it doesn't cover any ground other stuff hasn't already many times. There's some really nice stylistic flair in the art that made me think of Monogatari, though that might be just because of the Shaft name being attached to it, as the director didn't do any notable Shaft work, although the producers did. The director did do Kino no Tabi and Lain though, so he's no slouch. I'll also mention a couple movies which I've only heard mentioned literally once or twice. 1. Trava: Fist Planet Connected to the Redline production somehow in a way I can't remember all the details of, but the story takes place in the same universe. Amazing animation, really compelling style. Some great humor too. Honestly this is a true hidden gem. And you don't need to have seen Redline so check it out. 2. Hana to Alice: Satsujin Jiken Really quirky. Not for people who complain about lack of plot. There is a plot, but it doens't really go anywhere. It's more about two girls bonding. That combined and the strange art style using rotoscoping means some people just will not be able to get on with this. But for anyone that likes stuff that's a bit different, it's pretty good. |

Night Walker Unless you were watching obscure shows from Manga Corps in the early 2000s, you've never heard of it. It's my favorite vampire show, a josei series with a very likable cast. Episodic...but not always predictable and a solid dub. And the best human girl x vampire love story I've ever seen; he treats her so nicely. (lol f*ck you, Twilight) There's not a conclusive ending...but I got what I wanted from it. I love it so much that I made a blog for it. xD https://www.tumblr.com/blog/vampreciousnightwalker And anyone who's a fan of that "old school horror style" should check it out because yeah, while there are a few cute scenes here and there, it's quite gritty, dark, and horrifying and not every episode ends happily. The MC is supposed to hunt down and kill demons that prey on humans; when one possesses a dying little kid, his mother REFUSES to give him up...so the MC ends up walking away, leaving the mother to live with her creepy undead son, feeding on animal corpses and you never see these characters again! Pretty effed up...that unresolved story reminds of me of the ones you'd see in that 90s Batman animated series...except with the Gothic horror and violence turned up to 11. xD |

Battery A sport anime that is actually more into SOL than sports, which is why his rating is this low. But the drawings were beautiful, and the story was so simple that it was unusual. I kinda liked it. |

Candy Candy is very popular among 40+ year olds, but unknown among younger generations. Probably because due to a long lasting legal dispute between the creators, anime was not broadcast for a long time and there are not any official dvds in japan |

My go-to for this kind of thing is ALWAYS the 1993 Black Jack OVA series. Super under appreciated and it's absolutely fantastic. I understand Tezuka's works are super popular, but he's often overlooked in the modern era (except for the recent Dororo adaptation), and I can't hype this little series up enough. |

First to come to mind is Otogizoushi. I'm in struggle to describe it because this show is really unique and separated into 2 distinct parts since we follow characters in ancien Japon setting and then their reincarnation in modern time, and all that surrounded by some supernatural elements and some philosophical stuff. The animation is pretty average, the art is kinda realistic and bleak, I think it fit well with the show but it's not for everyone, it's more like a niche anime for those who wants to discover new things Then Mahoutsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora . It's a SoL/Iyashikei about a girl who goes to Tokyo to study magic, that's the most realistic art I ever seen, I mean the animators literally took photos in the streets and made a mix between photos and drawing, that was pretty impressive to watch for me. I felt like I really was in Tokyo lmao. The show itself is pretty slow, and more focused on contemplation, ambiance, etc Don't expect a lot of magic everywhere or super magical girls, it's just simple magic just like the show itself, simple and charming. |

I mentioned both of them in a similiar post a few month ago but I guess it doesnt hurt to do so again. 1) Moonlight Mile (Season 1 & Season 2) A space drama without mech's. In terms of setting its similar to Planetes (i.e. "Hard" Sci-Fi). Its basically about 2 friends betting who gets first to the moon which later evolves into some kind of geopolitical conflict. Worth a watch if u dont mind the typical mid-2000s CG (but not on Gonzo levels of bad). 2) Hi no Tori Its very similar in structure to Aoi Bungaku (i.e. collection of short stories). Even though I didnt like most of them as much as the ones in the formerly mentioned show its still worth a watch mainly because of the unique settings in these stories. |

Just look up anime related lost media. Most are just dubs that never got released to home video or obscure short films and OVAs. Nearly impossible if not impossible to find lost media. So if you can get ahold of some you will be one of just a tiny number to see it past it's original airing. |

I dunno if you can consider it anime. It's Japanese and it's animated. But it's not traditional anime, in a sense. Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories is a weird show that I stumbled upon a few years back. It's a horror anthology that gave me the freakiest nightmares. |

Gokudo: I watched it when I was much younger, and thought it was an absolute blast. I don't understand why more people don't know about it. Ane Log: pretty bad comedy anime. I think that's it? There are some other anime I've watched that I haven't heard people mention, but those anime have a lot more members. I think you'll find it hard to find an anime fan who's watched anime that very few know about. Because I think most anime fans are like me, in that they watch anime they've heard of through word-of-mouth. |

Spies release. It may seem really boring at first, bc it's like all shounen anime where the mc wants to become a good spy and not let her sempai down, but to me, it was amazing. I only started watching anime then and it was like a revelation to me, something that hit me in a personal way. I really understood all the mc's feelings and actions, bc the way she wanted her sempai to be proud of her and then *spoiler* her learning that she doesn't really need her to be proud really made me rethink a lot of things. I can't really say that you'd definitely Love this, but you should give it a try. |

The characters were boring and the comedy felt forced and kind of cringe. Even the fight scenes were lame and anti-climatic. |
