which anime/manga protagonist, in your opinion, has the best character development?

my personal favorite’s eren jaeger, from aot. i feel like his development is a bit more subtle (at least compared to the whole “bad guy turns good” trope) and takes multiple different events and a really long time to really show (unlike characters like kaneki ken, who’s personality suddenly does a 180 after being tortured).

he starts off as an angsty reckless dumbass, and eventually learns how to keep his cool during a battle and also realizes that his special powers don’t actually make him special; he’s just “a normal human dragged onto a special path”. he learns how to rely on his teammates and trust them instead of pushing them away in fear of being perceived as weak. his growth continues to happen throughout the entire show from beginning to end, and it’s not just about him getting stronger. (it’s hard to say anything about manga eren since we don’t completely know his true intentions yet, but his sudden change from the things he’s gone through/seen is VERY interesting and different.)

I'd say Joe from Ashita no Joe. I'm almost finished with the series, and I can safely say that he, Joe changes completely and grows out of a lot of things.

ooh i read that, it was good! one thing tho, i feel like his growth was more based on strength rather than personality. he’s a lot stronger now, but his “character development” is pretty basic with the whole weakling to badass trope. he never really had a notable personality, from beginning to now. I'll go for Monkey D. Luffy. With arc development the way how his powers were increased was amazing and now he is too much powerful that can defeat 1 billion bounty man easily.

Hmmm... I like how Lelouch from Code Geass evolves from an avenger into a tragic hero that sacrifice himself for world peace. I also like how Ed from FMA evolves from a brat possessed by his obsessions, but is not devoured by them (in the way that even when he is given the opportunity to fulfill his desire he refuses to use the Stone for it), and then simply realise that his idea of doing everything alone was wrong and give up on everything he represents. Another good evolution is Naruto... Yup. NARUTO! He got from an idiot brat that pissed the hell out of you each time he did something, into a mature young adult capable of strategical thinking, able to control his emotions... basically everything he was not as a child. It may not seem special, but if you think about the other long-running series, usually the protagonist don't grow that much - Luffy doesn't change too much in +900 episodes, Natsu is basically the same at the end of Fairy Tail, Kubo got bored and by the time Bleach ended Ichigo had less personality than a white wall, in Dragon Ball Goku is pretty much a child as an adult too... I mean, there is growth in the first part, while he is a child, but as he grow he becomes stronger but unchanged. I didn't watched Hunter X Hunter so I don't know about it. I love the growth of Yona from Akatsuki no Yona.

But I guess the best character development is in Tengen Toppa Guren Lagan, where Simon evolves from a coward brat to a super badass.

Yabuki Joe in Ashita no Joe

Kozue Ayuhara in Attack no 1.
(The anime is an adaptation of Chikako Urano's 1968 volleyball manga serialized in Weekly Margaret Magazine under the same name.Chikako was considered one of the founders of shōjo anime. And the series was introduced not only to push the older female manga fan base (as opposed to the significantly younger audience for magical girl series such as Sally, the Witch) into the anime mainstream, but also capitalizes on the boom of the gold medal Japanese women's volleyball team in the 1964 Olympics. The show did stand out in an era dominated by shōnen adventures and sci-fi anime)

Reinhard von Lohengramm from Legend of the Galactic Heroes. He started as an impulsive boy who only cared about saving his older sister to a young ambitious man that changed his goal to get rid off the corrupted nobility of his nation and unite the whole universe under a single government that was benevolent for all people and not just aristocracy through pure politics and conquest.

These are the best Written characters I have seen in manga/anime:
Guts
Johnny Joestar

And then some really good ones:
Gon
Luffy
Saki Watanabe
Simon

Btw, honorific mention to Shirou Emiya. He is the only character I know for a Visual Novel that got three different developments trough the novel, but at the same time those three routes (Fate, UBW and Heaven's Feels) are the deconstruction of his own ideals.

For me a non-anime char beats every anime here: James Morgan McGill (I did not google that full name - I hope I'm correct) from Beter Call Saul.

For anime ... well I don't know. There are a lot of shows I like becaue of likeable chars while the plot is mediocre only. Chars are more an important thing. (Cause great plot usually is harder to find.)

Then again ... I don't like them because of the development. I'd need to think really hard to find a good one. Checknig my favorite anime/chars and the anime I scored 10 or 9.

And yeah Rei from Sangatsu Lion is a great one. And I know other shows with great chars that are shown great with their fealings and interactions and actions. (Great and easy to relate to them and to understand what they feel and why they did stuff because they did it.) But the real "development" .. I don't know.

It would need to be on a great level the way it is executed and shown and also actually by development in terms of the character changing fundamentally and making progress in his personality. Just a shounen where he got changed ... is nothing to me compared to a show with tons more character depth but less change.

Reinhard vom LOGH yeah. Yang on the other hand was great as well but he basically stayed true to his beliefs in democracy.

Showa Rakugo also had some mature chars and in the 2-cours (split) some development I think. (A bit hard to remember the plot I only know the show as great and I liked the chars.)

Migi and shinichi from parasyte. I'll never be able to forget the scene where he throws a dog in trash. Best character development so far for me
Yona from Yona of the dawn.
Shirayuki from snow white with red hair
Kazuma from assassination classroom
Greed from FMA brotherhood.

Eren like some others said.

And I would say Phos from Houseki no Kuni/ Land of the Lustrous. Phos started as the annoying sibling that nobody likes, then become less and less cheerful after some various events and ended becoming the shadow of their former self.

That's why I can relate with him More.
I'm not a protagonist fan so I'll choose Eren Yeager and Lelouch,, they acted like villain then we realise their plan.

Simon from TTGL. him growing from a dependent insecure kid to who he eventually becomes was remarkable.
Shinichi Izumi From Parasyte. He went through experiences no one else had
and it all together allowed him to become the badass he was by the end of the series.

Of the anime/manga I've watched and read, probably Thorfinn from Vinland Saga. Given the manga becomes more of a character-driven drama at a certain point, his development from adolescence into an adult with strong themes of regret and redemption is executed meticulously by the author.

Closely followed by Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan. His arc is probably the most pronounced and shocking of the two given the manga is a lot shorter than Vinland Sagas, but the transformation from a whiny, naive, righteous 8 year old to the person he's become is fantastic, and believable given the circumstances.

While i completely disagree with Eren Yeager being one of the best developed Characters, i have to admit that after Season 3 he is at least not a badly writtin one anymore.

For my picks i would go with:

Guts and Griffith from Berserk (the best protagonist-antagonist relationship in anime/manga,references to Nietzsches übermensch in Griffith, Guts is one of the best "Human monsters" in fiction (probably even better than Geralt from the Witcher books) getting truly human and understandable development)

A big chunk of the Oyasumi Punpun cast including Punpuns downward spiral

Some other that are on a similar level of quality writing, Rei from 3-gatsu no lion, Inferno Cop from Inferno Cop, the pussy pilots from EVA,Joe from Ashita no Joe as the best Shounen protagonist of all time, and probably many more
