Well WWII is a pretty sensitive topic in Japan with all the things the Japanese military did during the war. See Nanjing Massacre.

So I dunno what they'll show in a WWII anime. Also I'm not sure how it'll work in anime format.

You can watch Tsuki ga Noboru made ni. That one is based during WWII. And Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni.

There's this one

https://myanimelist.net/anime/8436/Animentary__Ketsudan

But I dunno where to watch or if there's even a subbed version, most likely not.

Oh and obviously the well known movies Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot Gen.

Kono sekai no katasumi ni, it's about those left behind on the so called "home front", it's pretty sad. They show some fighting too and their reaction to the emperor speach is heart breaking and disturbing in the same time.

Tensions in Asia are pretty touchy. A show like that would get a lot of hostility almost immediately. That is why most WW2 themed anime focus on the civilian side rather than the military.

If you didn’t know Japan committed genocide in the 30s and 40s. It would be very difficult to make a tasteful show about Japanese soldiers during that time period.

that's not really an argument. There's plenty of movies and other media takes on Hitler coming from germany and germany is much more self-conscious about the atrocities they committed than Japan is about theirs. That is not really a realistic reason for not having any media about that time period.

But well, there are plenty of WWII stories in anime (even tho most are movies rather than series) so the thread was kinda wrong from the start.
I probably regret this post by now.

If you're looking for civilian perspectives, then there are quite a few as mentioned above. Giovanni's Island is also another one, and it deals more with the Soviet invasion of Japan towards the end of the war.

But if you're looking for the military side of things, then there aren't that many. Youjo Senki is the only one I can think of, but that takes place during WWI (pseudo-replica of it) and it focuses more on the "German" side

WW2 is still a big taboo in Japan. Barefoot Gen, cited above, was even criticised for its raw (and critic) portrayal of Japan during the war, while Grave of the Fireflies had a free pass for its emphasis on the victimhood of the country. It's a weird paradox, a doublethought in its most natural form: people are just too aware of it to be aware of it.

It's a sensitive topic.

You can't make more WW2 than this. If any fansub team is up for it, I wholeheartedly welcome their effort! Need money? I am ready to contribute on interesting projects, just hit me up and will look around to check if you are serious.

...It's not that there's not any anime with WW2 setting, OP. You just don't look into it as much as you should.

There are quite a few, and they're usually movies. Grave of the Fireflies, In The Corner Of This World, Chironup no Kitsune (set in the time of WWII, although it wasn't about the fighting but was rather about soldiers taking fox furs as trophies), Hotaru Kagayaku, and The Cockpit are a couple examples.

You won't see very many about actual combat stories because Japan lost the war and they've got a complex about it because it was a disgrace and they don't like to talk about it. You do occasionally see things about how it effected the people though, like Barefoot Gen, Glass Rabbit, and Grave of the Fireflies. Possibly the only exception I've seen out there is Zipang, which is about a modern Japanese battleship that somehow time traveled back to the time of WW2 and debates whether to change history, but I haven't watched it because I hear it's incomplete.

I don't think he was making an argument saying it was right or anything, but it does seem like Japan just doesn't want to talk about these things anymore. We've gotten some older anime about it, but it's so uncommon in modern anime, like they're trying to sweep it under the rug. I don't think the Germany comparison is right because Japanese culture and German culture are very different, social stigma is a much larger issue in Japan.

I'm not saying it's a justified reason for them not to talk about it more or anything though, it's just what it seems like.
