She is one of the few of my friends who has seen more than 300 Anime. (Most of my friends are around the 100-200 mark)uhh its easily one of the most popular anime, I guess you haven't been around enough. Angel Beats for some reason is not any of my friends first 100 or even 200 Anime. And being somebody who didn't like Clannad, Your Lie in April, and other cheap cry anime with to me the most worthy to watch cry Anime all being movies... Yeeeah. Before coming to this site, I was confused as well. I haven't even seen someone cosplay it and I have been in the community since the early 00's! All the other to popular Anime have lots of cosplayers or had a phase of them. There are STILL cosplayers for the top 4. And Code Geass and Stiens Gate and Naruto and Mirai Nikki and Tokyo Ghoul! Angel Beats is the only one I have NEVER seen a cosplayers for in that entire top ten. |

I enjoyed it but I don't think it deserves it's reputation, The comedy was very childish and dumb which is a typical thing in most of Jun meade's animes . I did like the characters though especially Yuri |

It's the worst of Jun Maeda's works that I've seen. Clannad, Little Busters!, Kanon, they're all better despite all having pretty notable flaws of their own. The only thing Angel Beats! is good for is occasional top-tier comedy. |

There's one thing Angel does better than those other three- The two female leads (Yuri and Tenshi) They are both far more compelling and interesting than the female characters in those other three who all behave and sound like 10 years old . |

Thread Moved Please make threads in the correct sub-board. Also, Angel Beats is only "popular", if you wanna put it like that, because of the user count. It has Jun Maeda, good soundtrack, and made from KEY who just did Clannad. 2010 -> onward was, imo, the time where Anime was getting introduced more to the West. I didn't find out about anime until 2011. Many of my friends are the same way. I never even heard about it until my high school days lol. Back when I watched Inuyasha on TV, I was still a middle schooler and I thought it was just a cartoon. The reason why you don't see Clannad higher than Angel Beats in user count despite being made before it is because it's a SOL type of drama show. Meanwhile, Angel Beats focuses more on the Comedy + Supernatraul/action bit (Though failing in the latter department due to the lack of episode count and character development). And Angel Beats actually has good Female leads, unlike Clannad: AS. Now, you could technically ask "Why isn't Steins;Gate there instead?" Who knows. Maybe because one is 13 episodes and the other is 26. SAO + FMA and so on is up there due to the hype the show gathered before its airing and started airing, even though one of the two failed miserably at everything. 2012 was probably when the boon of anime fans started getting into anime, following up with AoT. Plus, you need some religious anime to save us from this reality of this godless earth. Secondly, it's got beats in it. To the uninformed outsider, this might sound like "beets", which would put them off the show, because of the unusual and presumably disgusting mixture of beetroot and angel delight. However, if you're "in the know" you realise it's not "beets" it's "beats". And beats are okay. I mean the noun to do with music, I don't support beating people. Unless it's in the sense of beating them in the sense of being a victor in a game against them. Who doesn't enjoy victory? So in a sense the title means "holy delicious dessert musical victory", and that sounds like an awesome anime. Who wouldn't want to watch that? hmmm sounds like you're talking about evangelion KannoSugako said: So, on a count from 1-10 how much worth watching is it? Always wondered if i should o shouldn't watch it. I mean each time i read the synopsis it doesn't suck me in. I liked angel beats, it was pretty funny, although I didn't really feel sad while watching until the last episode. I'd put it at 6, it's not really memorable and isn't really deep, but it's entertaining for 13 episodes. hope that helps :-) Then i guess it's just as i thought, i don't have to rush me watching it. I was always puzzled both by the rating and the popularity. But i guess it can wait. Thank you :D |

It reminds me of clannad but compressed into 13 episodes, it's got the comedy, music, story and atmosphere of a great anime. I think the only downfall it had was the sheer speed it had to tell the story at because 13 episodes will breeze through. Honestly I liked AB the most out of any key anime. I liked it way more than clannad especially the second season, I at least could rewatch this one. |

@Tyrel Angel Beats focuses more on the Comedy + Supernatraul/action bit (Though failing in the latter department due to the lack of episode count and character development). I don't feel that AB fail at supernatural elements. On other hand, Clannad: After story fails at supernatural elements. In my opinion, it has Deus ex machina ending. The ending is here because they don't want to end with "sad ending" |

Ok. I saw this post yesterday. And wanted to write an answer to it. But I saw Angel Beats in 2013 so I didn't had any accurate memory about it. However, I really waned to answer, so I binge watched it, and finished it now. And now I can answer even if not everyone will read it, eventually they will. Title said: Why is angel beats one of the top five popular anime First of all. It has a perfect plot. Everything that the characters do is for one reason, rebel against God. All those violent acts/disturbances caused by the SSS, were made so God could appear and see their revenge for their unfair lives. At first they thought that Tenshi (Kanade) was sent by God, but eventually they found out that she was human too. Therefore Otonashi gets to know her, and introduces her to the SSS. She opens up to Otonashi, and after he regains his memory and tells her his goal, she wants to help him achieve it (He wanted to help the whole SSS to overcome the pain of their painful lives). I could say that Angel Beats never deviated from its plot. Second, like everyone has said, it has a very good soundtrack. All the songs fit the anime and are made to touch the heart of the viewer. All of them made my tears roll down. Third, it's made in such a way that when a character's happiness is granted, you can feel it yourself. I won't deny that I could feel the joy of Iwasawa, Yui, and all the characters that reached their happiness. Fourth, an unexpected but beautiful happy ending. I won't spoil the anime, but I love its final. END OF REVIEW For those who are considering watching Angel Beats! Do it right now, you won't regret it. It's a masterpiece of anime. |

@Pixel_Vapour At Clannad: B) Yeah, in Clannad 1; C:AS follows 1 route as far I can see (by watching anime not reading the Visual novel). The other routes are abandoned? Idk. I haven't seen other routes in AS. A) You are right but it doesn't change a thing. It's like: 1. Miracles happens. 41. Super villain killed entire country. 42. God kills villain and restructure people. ps. yeah, there are no 2-40 points |

Angel Beats is my favourite anime (so incoming bias), and it's understandable that it's that popular, the animation is amazing for its time, the light hearted and funny starts for every episode and how it gets increasingly deeper and sad as it goes on. And the soundtrack is one of the best ones as well. It's a great show and deserves being even more popular. |

I guess that explains why I have a hard time watching it now. I waited too long. It just feels like the drama and story background come out of nowhere. Being used to key I'm also used to world settings that dont appear to make sense at first, the whole fighting against Tenshi makes zero sense in the first 2 episodes. I think the anime is popular because the opening song/video is quite good, and its a Key anime. That's why I finally ended up trying to watch it myself. It's animation quality is also pretty good for its time. Recondito said: First of all. It has a perfect plot. Everything that the characters do is for one reason, rebel against God. Maybe its because I'm more of a novel/VN reader, but the plot makes no sense to me. It feels like a Key story without any of the background leading up to the supernatural part, with the anime only being the supernatural part. Recondito said: For those who are considering watching Angel Beats! Do it right now, you won't regret it. It's a masterpiece of anime. While I can appreciate the animation and music quality, so far only Tenshi's character design strikes me as great, but I will continue to see if the anime improved. This anime has been in my backlog pretty much since it first aired so I really should watch in its entirety.. |

The ''plottwist'' with Tenshi might of been emotional for some, but for me since the build up to that wasn't..there, I can't say it increased my opinion at all. It's like a Key story with all the build up to the serious stuff cut out, and half the serious stuff cut out as well. Ending to the show wasn't anything special either. Still love the opening song/movie but that's pretty much it for me. So for me the show is pretty much cemented as ''one of the most overrated shows I've watched'' |

That's why i gave it a 9 when i was watching it, nowdays i probably can't do that anymore, since i tend to be way more critic about everything i watch. (and that's why Angel Beats scores is high, it's probably one of the first anime people watch, so we tend to apreciate more what we are watching other than trying to find flaws in every corner) And is not overrated AT ALL, it has a lot of members(popularity) but 8.30 is a very reasonable score. |

I never tried to dislike it, it just has too much to dislike, and not enough to like. The anime just has too many critical flaws right from the start, which makes it hard for me to get any immersion. And that's despite a high animation standard and an interesting character design (Tenshi), with a great opening on top. I guess it being a Key story set my standards high enough to expect something interesting, instead of something bad. So rather then trying to hard to dislike it, my problem is I tried to hard to like it. lezerman said: (and that's why Angel Beats scores is high, it's probably one of the first anime people watch, so we tend to apreciate more what we are watching other than trying to find flaws in every corner) I agree with that to some extend. Perhaps if I watched it before enjoying over a thousand stories of all kinds I'd feel different about it. But while it's understandable that someone new to stories or such would rate it high (its not overrated in that perspective), its certainly overrated if most people do. lezerman said: And is not overrated AT ALL, it has a lot of members(popularity) but 8.30 is a very reasonable score. 8.3 is an extremely high score. So naturally if the anime is only mediocre (by virtue of having great animation, music, some nice character designs etc) that does mean the anime is overrated. (over-rated) I mean really, in what world is an 8.3 only a ''very reasonable'' score, instead of a great one? That aside, what matters most is enjoyment. With nothing in the plot making sense and the ''fun'' not only being not fun, but actually hateful; I cant find that enjoyment. I dont know why an anime original feels like a poor adapation of an original source, but that should never happen. But with Angel Beats it did. Hence why it having a really good score is certainly a sign its overrated. |

I wouldn't know. It's like it wants to be a mix of Haibane Renmei and Re:Zero (yes, I know it's an older show, that's not the point), but lacks the structural integrity and emotional intensity or focus of either. By the time there are a couple of touching moments, the show is already over, thus not having given those moments time to have an impact. On me, at least. The story struggles with pacing, tonal shifts, atmosphere, build-up, plot integrity and even genre. It's like they had no idea whether they wanted all of this to be funny, tragic, serious, existential, or a sort of afterlife-slice-of-life kind of deal. And yes, I did watch the whole show, I get what they were going for, but honestly to me it just seemed like a cop-out to be able to jump all over the place. Angel Beats! didn't play to the main potential it had - the character backstories. Any one of them separately could have made a better show or movie than having all of them lumped together like this did. I expected something completely different going in and am kind of disappointed I wasted my time. |

For a lot of people if they like what they are watching it's a 10, they don't care about plot holes, or anything like that.. every anime suffers from that, you are being a bit too harsh. |

I think what makes Angel Beats resonate with a lot of people (myself included) in spite of the lackluster worldbuilding is the emotional core of the series, which is really much more of a focus than trying to create a cohesive "world" in its story. It tackles themes and asks questions a lot of people may find themselves wondering about what the answer could be: If you were to die now, would you feel like you lived a fulfilled life? If not, then what was/is missing from this unfulfilled life you have been living thus far? As much as the series would benefit from being two-cour so more stuff could be explored, I feel what they did with the characters that got to be explored/developed during the course of the series was enough to hold a 13 episode series on its own, all of the dramatic character-centric parts had something to say regarding the central theme of the show. Yuri was not only unhappy with her previous life, but she was actively seeking revenge against God for giving her a life she considered to be unfair for reasons shown in he series, Iwasawa cursed the fact that she never got to realize her dream of becoming a musician because of what happened in her previous life, Yui is an immature and hyperactive-to-the-point-of-annoyance girl who acts that way because due to circumstances in her previous life, she couldn't even move her body to begin with, etc. And contrasting these characters with negative perspectives on their previous lives is Otonashi, unlike everyone else, he was able to turn his previously stale and underwhelming life for the better and ultimately died with a feeling that he accomplished a lot in spite of this tragic fate, which means he wouldn't be sent to this purgatory by the normal means. The way Angel Beats tackles its themes and offers different perspectives on the very concept of Afterlife is the series' biggest strength, it's more emotion-oriented than anything else, and that's why a lot of people are so fond of it, even though technically it's not a series for everyone. I love Angel Beats despite its flaws, I could do without stuff such as the utterly repetitive comedy scenes and that dumb Angel clone arc that happens out of nowhere and doesn't amount to anything either, but outside of those weak moments, when the show has something meaningful to say, I think it says very well. |
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength. |

And that's what makes it overrated....I dont see how stating a fact that something is overrated is considered harsh. There's a lot of other mediocre and bad animes out there. Not ''every anime'' suffers from the majority calling it a great show despite being a poor one, tho. Altho you are right there are certainly a whole bunch of anime that suffer from it as well, and I very obviously also rate those as overrated. That said, if mediocre or bad animes are top recommended, that means the entire list is utterly useless. It's one thing to call a good show a great or amazing show, and another to call an amazing show ''merely good'' but calling a poor/mediocre one amazing..yeah.. PrincessMeiMei said: I wouldn't know. It's like taking a Key novel, reducing its contents by 90%, then throwing the remainder in a blender and see what comes out, then as final touch adding a good ainmation budget and some nice OP track to it. |

For me, unfortunately, the animation didn't deliver, either. It felt...cheap somehow, and very stereotypically anime-looking. I mean that in the sense of...I don't know. Someone's imagination of anime who doesn't actually watch anime. As for the soundtrack, the only part that really touched me, and easily the best part about the whole show was "My Most Precious Treasure". All of that said, I'm what could be considered a casual anime fan, that is, I'm not the most knowledgeable about the field, so far be it from me to diss any animators or anyone else involved in creating this or any other anime. This one's just not my style, I guess. I'm glad you were able to get enjoyment from those aspects, though. |
