I know my list is pretty limited right now, but I find myself looking more on the "top anime" list rather than searching deeper for some shows that might fit my particular interest, not really that I don't know what to watch but rather that I'm too lazy to go back into the history of anime lmao

I generally go by recommendations of shows that are like what i've seen, random searches, and then some seasonals tossed in. The rating doesn't need to be high for me to watch it (anything over a 6 is fair game for me), as long as the synopsis is intriguing. If the rating of the show is high, well that's just icing on the proverbial cake.
What's your rush now? Everyone will have his day to die.

For me, if I want something new to watch or read, I tend to pick a genre first based on my mood at that time. Then, I usually sort by score, and to a less extent, sort by most members/popularity. I go into most things not having a score already in my head though (such as, if show X has a rating of 9 on MAL, it must be really good) as opinions differ from every person over how good a series is.

Oh hell no, MAL scores are like FFFFFFFFFFFFFF XD

For seasonal anime I check LiveChart. If I see one that looks interesting to me, I may go to the website of the series.

When it comes to older titles, friends either SHOVE them at me or.....actually quite a few AMVs have made me decide to watch the respected show.

Usually I just watch whatever looks interesting regardless of the rating but of course there are a few exceptions. For example everything below a 7 is likely to be average at most and everything below 6 nearly unwatchable, so it is a good indicator to tell where it stands. On the other hand high rating =/= good, so you should always make sure that it lines up with your own interests rather than the interests of the majority of the community.
I'm feeling thank you

Back in my day, when we rode horses instead of drove cars, word-of-mouth was usually how I decided. That and what was available for rent at the video store.

Nowadays, I pretty much go by genre. I spend more time watching all the old shows I missed way back when than I do watching new stuff, honestly. There's not a lot of science-fiction today and although I like fantasy, I'm pretty much tired of isekai.

I mostly find anime to watch through recommendations, or scrolling through anime in the genre search page. If it looks interesting I'll watch it even if it has a low score.

I'm willing to watch some 5s and 6s depending on how it looks since I don't trust MAL's taste that much, but usually not below 5. I sort by year and genre rather than scores.

I choose what to watch mostly on my own searches and recommendations (the ones I asked for mainly on Facebook groups, not some random ones). It's much more effective for me because I like to watch older and unpopular anime too, and they're often rated 6-7 here. I also just use the top list sometimes, but I don't trust it too much.

Scores affect but I usually watch it on my own judgment. Although School Days scores around 6.05, I am in love with it. I go for what I like, oh and covers affect me too much! Art style has to be good.

All of the above?

I will literally watch anything that isn't torture porn, and I like to keep a variety of anime on my watching list at all times. I don't really care what it's rated usually, although I'm currently trying to watch the top 100 in both rating and popularity just for fun.

Anyways, I frequently watch anime completely blind without knowing the MAL score or synopsis, and I find my enjoyment of series to be generally higher when done this way, so I'm trying to do it more often. Basically I watch knowing only the title and possibly having seen the MAL thumbnail or some other artwork (but sometimes not even that). In this way, I never know what I'm getting, and it helps me to discover new anime I've never heard of.

One way I do it is just check Nyaa recent uploads and download the most recent uploaded batch that I haven't already seen. It's like Russian roulette, and I derive pleasure from it.

[Luckily I haven't accidentally downloaded torture porn in this way.]

Score matters much to me honestly, not just in MAL though, I sometimes search for rating in other sites ...
I also don't really care about recommendations, I am not interested in watching similar shows, I rather find another greats in another genres ...

In terms of seasonals, I do minimal research. When looking at a seasonal anime chart, I just try to determine if any are sequels. If there are sequels, I try to watch the previous seasons prior to the start of that season. Sometimes there are shows that get through the cracks. This season, I somehow missed that Basilisk : The Ouka Ninja Scrolls is a sequel. I've put that on hold so I can soon start watching the first season. The second season of Gin no Guardian and Hitori no Shita are airing. I've dropped the first season of those shows, but I'm somewhat intrigued to give them another look.

As for the rest of the seasonals, I pretty watch everything offered in my subscriptions. I continue or drop a show depending on my enjoyment. Currently at 46ish seasonals. I would be surprised if I still have over 40 by the end of the season, but mid 30s would be my guess.

I do watch non-airing shows too, but those I pretty much pick at random; unless its preparing for an upcoming sequel.

Well, I don't believe in scores that much, some of my most disliked anime have +8 and +9 scores, and some of my favs have -8. But I'll admit I haven't gone as far as watching -7 anime. But yes, I use the tools on MAL to find anime. Of course you have the recommendations section, which I only looked up once.

Trolls_Bane said:

I'm not sure about that, if I were by the reviews I would probably end up watching nothing. Some of them are just so negative. And some of them are just, well, not to contradict you, but innaccurate, or just miss the point of the anime altogether.

Heck, I did a massive search by checking season anime per year in descending order because I was so desperate to watch more anime that time.

Same here. Actually i avoids show below 8.0 but i really interested with shows from previous seasons like Inuyashiki and Classroom of the Elite, but it fails to reach 8.0. So no. But actually, is it worth it to watch these shows?

I know some are written pretty vindictively and some downright worshipping the anime, but those who rate it at around 6-8 usually give a pretty good run-down of what you might be met with in the anime.

Pretty much exclusively personal searches. Most of my PTW list was built either from second hand discussions, images and gifs, random videos and clips, etc.
I'll also go through recent seasons and try to chip away at any shows that I missed or need to finish when I have a notable opening.
There are some days where I just felt in the mood for a specific genre or type of series so I'll do a vague search, choose say 5 that catch my interest and add them all to my PTW but pick the one most appealing at the time to watch.
Outside of that I just follow whatever watching challenges I want to pick up and build a schedule around those. Which has led me to entire franchises or encouraged me to watch things I would normally put off.
But I pretty much never use Top Anime or Most Popular to choose. If I had to resort to those 2 though most popular would be the easy choice.

i dont need to make searches i already know every anime that exists
at times i picked up anime just because i never heard of them until that point but it's not such a good idea especially after you find the places these anime hide

A bit of both...
Depends on what I'm doing.
Like, usually when I make food, I forget to find something to watch until AFTER I have it ready to eat, so at that point I just watch whatever has the highest rating/popularity at the time.
Otherwise, I tend to search for very (unnecessarily so) specific genre and character archetypes.
So basically, I'm really picky, unless I'm hungry, cause I can't eat unless I'm watching something.

When I was still new and just discovered this site, scores were everything. I tried to watch every anime that interest me that is on top 100. I guess that's the reason why I've already watched most anime in top 100 (rough estimation is 75/100). I'm changing that habit of mine now bit by bit. I watch what I want to watch and what piques my interest.

lol, I looked into the "top list" only once, to see what the fuzz was all about, with these regular whining topics how this is not #1, or that is #2.

But to find anime to watch - heck no.
Until I'll have - don't know … 500? - titles watched/ dropped, to me there is more anime that may be interesting to me coming to my attention from all kinds of sources than I can possibly watch in the same time.

There are so many interesting things that - deservedly or not - will never make it into some top lists, why should I want to make myself miss them?

This is a good way to watch a bunch of shows at first without putting much effort into searches. Doesn't mean you'll like everything, but after a while you should have a good idea of what you want and don't want to watch and be able to search on your own.

Neither,
To narrow stuff up with quick judgment you still need score,
I actually haven't found anything below 7 to be enjoyable/memorable/unique at least for now.
So picking up things below 7 especially 8 would be the option.

It still count with manual search because you have to find a good one in the running season or past.
