List your ideas on how to make a new Anime that deconstructs the Harem genre. My idea is simple. Start the story with already 4 girls already liking the MC for quite some time before the story even began, and in the first episode, after some short flashbacks and backstory, have the MC make up his mind and let him finally pick the girl he likes. Then they become couples and the other 3 not chosen would then feel quite sad and depressed that they didn't win the heart of their former Harem leader. That should all happen in the first episode of such an Anime. Then for the rest of the story, let the POVs and MCs switch to the other 3 girls and how they move on with their lives and then get to know 3 other male characters of which they would then get paired up with. So there will be 3 more couples formed by the end of the story. With that ending, 4 of the female cast will end up happily ever after with 4 male characters who all have good and admirable personalities, and of which 2 of them are handsome Ikemen including the former harem leader, the 3rd male would have an ugly face, but a very good personality, kind, caring, selfless, and having a heart of gold that would sacrifice anything for the girl he loves, while the last male character would be a hardworking 17-year old boy from a poor family where he has to take care of many younger sisters and brothers ending up being paired with one of the girls who's a rich Ojou-sama character ( He will not pick her just for the wealth benefits, as he really loves her with all his heart, and has told that girl's father, that he doesn't want to accept any money from him until he has started his own business or something. Even that girl would find it hard to convince her dad to accept that boy as her future husband, so there will be some drama in this arc of the story ) The setting for all those male characters can be changed, as those above are just my own examples. It deconstructs the harem genre as most of us never get to see what happens to the rest of the former harem members once the MC chooses his girl. In real life, it's extremely common for both males and females to find another BF/GF after they broke up with their last partner/spouse due to any reasons, so we need an Anime where we get to see other heroines from that former harem group finding their own happiness with other good men. This way, all 4 girls will end up happy, just as how those 4 male characters including the former harem leader too would all feel happy getting their own girlfriends. This way, we won't see just one male getting all the luck with ladies, but see 3 other males too getting their own GFs, so as a story it gives hope to many single people in Japan and all over Earth that getting a GF/BF is something that many can do if they put some effort in it, and having all the luck with ladies is not something that only one lucky chosen and privileged male can experience. So, 4 males and 4 females will all end up happy by the end of the story. Kinda like Tsurezure Children, but with more drama, and the harem deconstruction where we see how those former harem members start moving away from their former crush with their former harem leader. Of course, over the progress of those 3 arcs, it will take lots of drama and effort from both the girls and boys for their romance to develop, as it takes some time for the heroines to start realizing that there are also many other good males in the world other than their former harem leader. Even Kei from Ef who was way too obsessed with one male character ends up with that male's best friend instead, so just because you know someone for a long time doesn't necessarily mean you could win their heart in the end, as Osananajimi and long-time friends always end up losing as the other only friendzoned them and doesn't consider them as lover/spouse material. So, would you like to see such an Anime ? Here is a Japanese thread that discusses such a plot >> http://onecall2ch.com/archives/8991142.html Quote : 1: 名無しさん : 2017/11/07(火) 05:58:52.03 ID:yFASBqvSM.net 漫画家「選ばれなかったヒロインの1人とくっつけたろ!」 漫画家「このペースで他のヒロインも他の男キャラとくっつけたろ!」 Summary : Mangaka, or a manga artist, thought about pairing up heroines not chosen by the harem leader with other male characters. My Comment : In that thread there are lots of comments from pitiful and pathetic losers that can't stand the thought of girls not chosen by the MC ending up with other male characters. I mean, WTF ??? They really think that they self-projected themselves much into that "harem leader" that they'd feel mad that the girls the former harem leader doesn't choose ending up with other males ??? They don't even think of the happiness of those heroines not chosen, so how selfish and conceited they could be ! It's like as if they want those girls not chosen by the MC to remain single for the rest of their lives !?? KIMOI !!! What a twisted and disgusting way of thinking. I just don't understand their way of thinking, because I am someone that has good empathy and can feel very happy seeing other people being happy, so if Multiple Couples are formed, and other males too get their own girls, I would feel so happy like as if it's my own self getting my own girl or happiness. I guess those posters on that thread who oppose such a plot lacks empathy. Such pathetic losers. People with no empathy to characters in fiction would also reflect on their real life lack of empathy, and IMHO, people who lack empathy or who's a sociopath, deserves nothing but loneliness and isolation for the rest of their lives until they learn how to feel empathy for others and turn over a new leaf. If you're unable to wish for others happiness, happiness won't come to you, as jealousy towards something that doesn't belong to you in the first place, is an unjust and unenlightening act. I have always had a romanticized sense of justice, so when I read comments from people that lacks empathy toward fictional girls being rejected by a former harem leader, I find it somewhat unjust. Is jealousy and the desire to monopolize that strong in humans compared to the sprit of sharing happiness with others ? Is there no faith in the future of humanity that we can hope for any more ? Where has empathy and the spirit of sharing, coexistence and cooperation gone to ?

This picture of Nana basically sums up how I feel right now Thats not really a deconstruction OP. Thats more so a epilogue if anything. At least of the little of your post I read this time around If you're desperate for a harem deconstruction it would be better to start off with a harem right away and focus on how its not working as the girls feel that its just not what they want anymore and decide to leave. You don't have to make all the girls leave but at most MC should only have one girl by the end

Lurkers of this thread, be careful! CoolitzHubertXVI is a Fujoshi! Don't fall for the harem bait or you will join the dark side of Fujoshi culture and never recover! It's not for male consumption a harem anime that has other male characters interfering in the harem mechanics. To avoid the bait, you need to understand who watches harem, its history and why any attempt to add another male into a harem story is doomed. The harem genre is unique to Japanese Y/A shounen (boy's) fiction. The way it works is, usually through some contrived, sit-com circumstances, one guy ends up living cheek-by-jowl with a half-dozen or more tremendously attractive girls. Sort of like the crazy old lady on the corner with the cats, except that the protagonist collects girls; or rather, they end up collecting him. The female protagonists are as chaste as nuns, rationing their sexuality with the discipline of an Orwellian regime (though sexually titillating characters or situations will be tossed in as often wildly inappropriate "comic relief"). And the guy is generally stuck at the emotional age of thirteen and is passive as a stump. The infatuated girl praising the qualities of her boyfriend to her girlfriends asserts the superiority of her happiness in order to confirm her own desires. Her friends, envious of this happiness, desire the aforementioned friend in turn. Their desire reinforces in the girl the certainty that he is the "one". The protagonist in the harem genre is often a student living alone or at a boarding school (Mahoromatic, Maburaho, Please Twins, Happy Lesson), a ronin studying for his college entrance exams (Love Hina) or a college student (Ai Yori Aoshi, Oh My Goddess, Hand Maid May, Elfen Lied). Between the regimented hell of high school finals and the regimented hell of corporate life is the one period of life during which a Japanese man pretty much has permission to do nothing the best he knows how. As he will rarely consider marriage until he has "settled down" with a degree and a job, introducing sex, commitment and marriage at this point would only spoil the fantasy with too much hard reality. (And that "settling down" can take a while. Median age at first marriage in Japan is 30 for men and 28 for women; in the U.S. it is 27 and 25, respectively.) Harem simply represents the universal male desire to be desired by attractive women, and the female desire to desire something that will reciprocate that desire, however juvenile the form of reciprocation. But I believe there's another fantasy at work here, one more deeply rooted in the psyche, one more substantively responsible for the popularity of this specific genre: the harem as family. According to this formulation, the male protagonist is less a potential lover than a stand-in father/brother/son. Each of the women in the harem, in turn, represents one facet of the ideal mother/wife/sibling figure, from tomboy to sex kitten to kid sister to parent and traditional homemaker. There's usually a lay Shinto priestess or sword-wielding Zen master in there, too. And if the plot mechanics posit that if a pair within the harem pair off--the principal male and female characters--then they become the de facto parents (though with curfews and separate rooms). In fact, the shounen/harem genre does much better dramatically when the principals start off somewhat committed to each other, making them proxy parents by design. Oh My Goddess (Belldandy and Keiichi) and Ai Yori Aoshi (Kaoru and Aoi) begin with the girl making the first move and the two of them living together--only living--before the houseguests/siblings move in. In the former case, Keiichi's sister and Bellandy's sisters; in the latter case, Kaoru's female college classmates. But none of his male college classmates. The male lead fills all of the designated male roles. The rule-proving exception is Fruits Basket. I call it an exception because it follows the harem formula but comes out of the shoujo (girl's) category. Orphan Touru is taken in by the Souma family, three male cousins who share an ancient Chinese curse--they change into creatures of the Chinese zodiac when hugged by a non-clan member of the opposite sex. So right from the start, the asexual nature of the household is ensured. Other males destabilizes the concept of the harem family, adding uncertainty and potential plot deviations that weakens the family bond between the harem lead and the female protagonists. The correct label for this anime would be Yaoi, to warn the male audience that the objective of the anime is not to show girls in heat in love for the MC, but to give Fujoshi fanbase hopes for male pairings with all the idiotic unecessary dialogs between the male characters, showing the deep bond between them and their friendship(?), which is not what a straight male seeks when watching harem anime.

Make the harem lead pick a girl early on but after a bit of dating the chosen girl realises that this guy's no good and dumps him. After that the guy will move to date another member of his harem until she realises he's no good, do that until everyone dumped him and have all the girls become friend over their mutual dislike for this guy they used to be fond of. The girls then form a rock band and have hot lesbian sex backstage.

OP's idea sounds kinda boring to me, would rely on the personality of the characters to keep me invested. I'd much prefer an anime adapting the bejewelled dating sim Huniepop, but instead of pussy-footing around a bunch of women for the entirety, have the MC smash nearly all of them around the midway point, and see the consequences of doing such unfold afterwards before seeing how the MC is affected by screwing around with 8-9 women at the same time.

How about a main who seems to be just a random guy that doesn't seem interested in the 3-6 girls who are throwing themselves at him. One day (around two to three episodes in) he gets fed up with their pinning for him, and sits down with them for a talk. He tells them that he is an immortal, cursed to outlive time itself. He has no interest in the girls because he has lost so many loved ones over the course of his life (maybe five to six thousand years). He then works with them to find each girl someone special. The last episode contains a montage of him attending their weddings. After the credits roll, the screen fades black momentarily, then brightens to revel an asteroid field in space. A particularly large rock floats across the screen, slowly pivoting to show the immortal sitting cross-legged on a small mat. Then large pan out, revealing the remnants of Earth, the solar system, the galaxy, screen goes black, the end.

After surviving a plane crash a group of 20 or so students are stranded on a tropical island. After a falling out over a guy, 5 or 6 girls have their friendships shaken up. In their argument, one of them is revealed to be his current girlfriend and he has also slept with some of the others, while the rest have crushes they've kept to themselves. The guy in question did not go on the trip because he is an upper or underclassman. Meanwhile, one of them is taking the opportunity of the island's isolation and lawlessness to murder the competition. Suspicion and paranoia abound as the surviving girls fight each other for survival and try to catch the unknown murderer.

I'm writing a light novel currently that's a reverse harem from a male perspective. I don't think it's really deconstructing the genre so much as it is parodying it, but I still think it's a decent play on the whole idea. Although it doesn't deconstruct the harem genre as a whole, it's set in a university where everyone is split up into living either in a harem dorm or a reverse harem dorm which the principal setting this whole facility up for research purposes, which is an attempt to deconstruct the whole "I'm the only male in my school" trope of the genre.

I have also came up now with a new idea on how to create a new story that deconstructs the Harem genre with a far more edgier and darker tone/setting. The story will start just like my first example above, with 4 girls already liking the MC harem leader, but instead of the MC deciding on choosing any one of them to become his girlfriend, one day they all attend school with this shocking news >>> The MC's male best friend, who attends the same Club Activity as the MC and the other 4 girls in MC's harem, he....comitted suicide, and they then found out the best friend's dying message in a note he left. The MC's male best friend wrote in that letter, and explained sadly why he comitted suicide, and that is because he had to put up with handling jealousy and feelings of ostracization over the past 1 whole year, because all the female girls in that club only focused all their interactions and attention on the MC, and ignored him most of the time while flirting heavily the MC. If you want to see an example of that, watch the Anime, Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai till the end. So, the MC would then feel extremely devastated that he caused the death of his best friend, and all the girls in his harem too would feel very guilty at callously not reading the atmosphere where they had made too much flirting acts with the MC in front of MC's best friend. MC, who actually didn't like any of those girls in the first place, then suddenly get mad and decided he doesn't want to see any of those girls anymore and that caused the disbanding of the harem, and all the girls would then go home and try to recall memories of the deceased MC's best friend and how they all had ignored him and hurted his feelings by flirting too much with the MC in front of him and treating him like as if he's not there, while some of the girls had also treated him as a servant, asking him to run errands for the club, but he does it anyway, because he likes one girl in that club who likes the MC instead and wants to remain patient. So from those first 2 episodes, from the end of the 2nd episode, the plot moves when the MC and all of his former harem members gets summoned by the Goddess from an Isekai world in her dimension, and told them they can repent and correct their mistakes by helping to create a harem for the MC's best friend, who has been reincarnated into that other world already for the past 15 years ( Time flows differently there ). They are given 10 years in that world to complete these two tasks : 1. That world allows Polygamy if there's Mutual Consent among all parties, so the Goddess is ordering them to help that best friend character getting to marry up to 4 girls in that world. Time limit given is 10 years in that world's time frame. 2. The Goddess has sealed his past life memories but has not healed the trauma from his past life memories, so she will only release his past life memories once the 1st Task above is completed. The 2nd task here is, those 5 people need to apologize to that best friend character for mistreating him in their past world and his past life there, and gain an acceptance from him and reconcile. The 2nd task will fail if he doesn't accept their apology. The failure to complete those 2 tasks in that 10 year timeframe will result in them being sent to Hell for 50 years where they will have to do hard labor there before they finally get reincarnated back to another world. Then they get transported to that Isekai, and enrolled in the School of Knights and Magic, where they reunite again with the MC's best friend, this time known by another name as a different person and identity, since he is reincarnated here 15 years ago without retaining his past life memories. At that Academy, it's revealed that the best friend character is now the 2nd strongest swordfighting Knight in the school that has a special ability to resist and nullify all magic attacks and effects that comes into contact with his body, and is aiming to graduate and become a career high-ranking officer in that Kingdom's military. From that point, the story switches the MC or Protagonist to that best friend character, and we see how he already has 2 female secret admirers that likes him, but he runs away whenever he meets a girl, because he has an extreme fear of females, or Gynophobia, which is related to his past life trauma of being ignored by girls close to him which all likes another male who's his best friend. So, the story then sees how the former MC and the girls in his former harem cooperate with those 2 new female characters at that school in order to heal the new MC's Gynophobia trauma and complete those 2 Tasks. Other than those 2 female admirers already liking the new MC, 2 of the girls from the former MC's harem would then start liking the new MC with Gynophobia, and the former MC will then start to like one of the girls from his former harem, while the fourth girl in his former harem would like another male character who's the new best friend of the current MC with Gynophobia. There will be Action and Battles, and events will develop that solidifies all of their relationships. There will be 2 OP characters in the story where they have no rivals at all in that school, and that is the new MC ( After he has risen to the rank of strongest Knight ), and the former MC ( After he has trained hard with his cheat skill granted by the Goddess, "Magic Level Growth Rate X100" with which he quickly trains to become strongest Magician in a record short time ) The Goddess gave that former MC that cheat skill so he can already become strong enough to handle any physical challenges there so he and his 4 former harem girls can focus on their Tasks to complete their tasks of creating an end result where that new Gynophobia MC conquers his trauma and then ends up liking and marrying 4 girls that likes him too within that stipulated time frame of 10 years. At the end of the story, it should end with the new MC getting 4 girls in his harem and Polygamous Marriage, while the former MC will get one lover from his former harem group, who he then marries, and the last girl from his former harem will end up with the new best friend of the current MC. So, 1st Male Lead will get 4 girls in his harem, 2nd Male Lead 1 girl, and 3rd Side Male character gets 1 girl too. It is also expected they will succeed in those 2 Tasks, as I want this story to end happily for everyone. The theme of this story is : Reconciliation The morale of this story is : Never ostracize one of your friends and always find ways to make your friend happy by helping him get his own girlfriend especially if you already have one. Of course, that is if he wants one, and the best friend of this former MC clearly wants one, as he likes one of the former harem leader's girls in his past life, and clearly committed suicide out of jealousy at seeing the girl he likes flirting with the MC, as well as those 3 other girls doing the same, all in front of his eyes in their Club Activities. So, what do you think ? Is this new darker theme for a new story that deconstructs the Harem genre a fresh idea that can be implemented successfully for forming an interesting story that has the potential to become a Masterpiece ? For your reference, here is one dark Harem story at Ncode Syosetsu, where the MC is the ostracized one having to see up to 3 girls liking his male friend, with not one of those girls liking him, and all of them treats the MC like shit, including that so-called male "friend" >>> https://ncode.syosetu.com/n0182dk/ I'm also a little bit shocked that there's already an Author there that had made a Reincarnated MC Isekai where his method of reincarnating there is.... Jisatsu, or Suicide >>> http://ncode.syosetu.com/n6125dk/ Dealing with such dark themes and setting might not get published, let alone get an Anime Adaptation, but I'm sure that most Adults won't mix up reality and fiction anyways, and won't actually try this at home ( insert WWE line here ) so, I think that a story with such edgy and dark themes should be explored. I mean, there are lots of Animes with gore, NTR, violence, Hentai, anyways, so why not add this element of Suicide Isekai Reincarnation ?? The aim of this story as a deconstruction of the Harem genre, is meant to encourage new Harem LN Authors in the future to write stories where they treat a 2nd male character very well by giving that 2nd male his own loyal girl or even his own harem like the 1st male.
I am someone that would like to watch a Harem Anime with 2 male leads that each gets their own harem company of girls from the main cast. For example, 1st male lead gets a company of 4 girls and 2nd male lead gets 2-3 girls etc.

Welcome to the NHK did a lot of wierd stuff regarding harems. Satou got back in touch with his old high school friend he lost touch with, but she's got a boyfriend now, but she's still kind of in love with him. She went to see him to have one last fun time before she attempted suicide, and she ends up going with her boyfriend /now husband and living her life with him, having a kid with him. The newly introduced "saviour" that is like an angel to Satou, saving him from his currently shitty life ends up being someone using him for her own needs. They kind of end up together in a "not so normal relationship". The girl he met online turns out to be a guy.... They don't end up together for some reason. The old high school president reminisces about their past and seems to kind of like him and understand him, but also ends up being someone that was only using him for her own needs. She ends up without anyone but she does find happiness. His even worse of a loser friend ends up in a happy arranged marriage and leading a far more normal and emotionally stable life than him.

AdrianRubinsky said: fujoshi? harem bait? if they simply wanted a male pairings for their eyes they could just Watch "my royal tutor", or watched reverse harem. thats a very stereotypic argument youre giving. i think the person is just complaining about harems shows future in the viewers eyes at the end of most harems where they either see females WHO gets left out for the sake of one female or a Group of females WHO will forever surrounds an undeciding mc where you can almost imagine that there will be something that will lack in this future polygamic relationship where there will either lack private time for the mc or love in these cases. And seeing and undecisiding mc being around his "multible of possible futures" without making a final decition can actually fustrate many people in some cases those who hates the whimpy-like characters. same case is for reverse harems.but i can imagine Theres a less form for dislike for the harem situations that are all loveless situations and therefore can make almost no hope for shipping but ofc that wont hold back the shippers that can ship anything in their mind or the doujinshi creators.Lurkers of this thread, be careful! The correct label for this anime would be Yaoi, to warn the male audience that the objective of the anime is not to show girls in heat in love for the MC, but to give Fujoshi fanbase hopes for male pairings with all the idiotic unecessary dialogs between the male characters, showing the deep bond between them and their friendship(?), which is not what a straight male seeks when watching harem anime. well in my eyes the one u just judged by her fujoshiness is just another hopeless romantic WHO absolutely hates seeing or imagining people in dispair, unhappy or left out by their one love and wouldnt want to be one of those persons WHO are hopelesly in love with that one person that they might want for themselves. the person dislike having false hopes. i suggest that the person should rather find one of those loveless harem situation that might not even be categorized as harems so there wont be any false hope/expectations for any love situations in case if the person doesnt find any more of these harems with relief-relationship endings |
