Think about it when you tell people you watch anime they equate it to porn (those that know nothing of the genre). Many ecchi series have the negative stereotypes that normal people think of when they hear the term anime ex. "pantie shots," "big titties," "tentacles" (yes many ecchi series use this gag), "excessive nudity," and "lolis." I'm on a college sports team and believe it or not a small amount of the people on the team watch anime (I swim if you wanted to know). It's like 3 guys out of 22 lol. The really good guys on the team (jocks, the best ones) when they hear this guy other than me likes anime. They just make fun of him saying those tropes that I mentioned before. So my question is do you believe that the ecchi genre is a reason that anime will never be taken seriously or become more mainstream? |

Personally it's a double sided answer... Ecchi is widely more seen and accessible... You see ecchi tropes not just by watching them... They're in YouTube videos, memes, social media... So that's what people relate anime to... Hentai isn't as out there because... Well... It's porn... So you won't see hentai in a meme, you'll see ecchi... So ecchi is technically more to blame because it is not R+... More easily consumed by the average person without realization or actual intent... But at the same time ecchi wasn't that huge when anime started, or at least wasn't as graphic as it is now... Hentai created most of the tropes... |

Who cares about those jocks, best to ignore them imho. Ecchi is fun, normies just don't get it. Anime doesn't need to be more mainstream, we don't need some crazy SJW invading this community! |

No, it's just an excuse for them to not like anime. Sexual depiction appears in every media, they are just being hypocritical. But obviously I am biased as I never want anime to become mainstream to begin with. |

The only reason ecchi gives anime a bad name is because people pay more attention to ecchi, because they hate it more. It's basic human psychology: the more something goes against our way of thinking, the more attention we'll give it. Why else don't people shut up about SAO even though a majority of them don't like it? But objectively speaking, yes, ecchi gives anime a bad name, especially when most of them have tasteless, dull, fan service, making most of them fail as masturbation material. |

Maybe it's still like that in school? It was when I was in, but the number of grunts I know who love ecchi makes me skeptical of this, like, you kill people and you like Kokosuba, nobody is going to say shit, you can like Boku no Pico if you want. When I lived in Georgia it was noticeable, everyone thought anime = hentai and it was annoying but I would just recommend something i thought was fappable, making sure to go into explicit detail and watch as their feeble normie mind grappled with the sexual confusion that comes with lolis, traps, and monster girls. Now, it's getting so mainstream now that it seems like isolated communities that think this. |

No, it's probably the most sophisticated and thematically complicated genre. People who think that it gives anime a bad rep don't understand normies that don't watch anime. |

First of all, Ecchi is just a fanservice main stream crap, like the upcoming anime Yuuragi Yuuna Unless the story turns into dark one like rape, netorare, plunder during war, love scenes, and anything which is for mature audience and relevant to the story itself. Well I've seen a lot of Erotica Novels from japan like Pure Love x Insult Complex which is about sex, rape, revenge and yakuzas, a story of a pathetic mc rising as an underground boss, and I don't think eroticas like Pure Love x Insult Complex can be animated even if it has a good plot depicting nudity relevant. So it doesn't matter for me if these Ecchi is something people like, I'm reading a better version of them with a better plot. |

It's kinda annoying, when you casually say that you like anime and people, who aren't interested in it and also don't know you very well, associate it with drawn tits and ass. That's really not what it means to me and that's not how I want to be seen by others, because that's just not who I am. ^^" I also feel like kinda... not asexual, ofc, but you know, I'm usually far, far away from being horny (besides making dumb jokes for the lolz). So I personally just don't want to deal with too much Ecchi and similar things, which are just included to make you horny or fulfill a viewer's fetish. Tbh, it's just because I don't like to come across it. Eeh, the Ecchi in Magi was already a little bit too strong. Tho I really like Magi. On the other hand, I'm absolutely fine with sexuality, which is portrayed in different ways than Ecchi. So, if I get the chance, I try to explain myself and my view politely / in a way that doesn't make me look like an angry anime fan - hopefully. XD If not, well... happens? XD shouldn't care too much. Eh. Every medium of entertainment has its platter of trash, particularly when it comes to sexual fanservice. That 'ecchi' is a subsection reserved namely for anime is absurd. Movies aren't devoid of it - neither are advertisements or tv series, music videos, hell, even books aren't safe. It just appears more taboo in anime because, to an outsider, it's essentially cartoon sixteen-year-olds shaking their ass and disproportionately huge tiddies around. Just as you wouldn't judge an entire genre based on one shitty movie, I think the same should be said for ecchi. It does exist and it serves its purpose fine, but it shouldn't come as much surprise to society, seeing as this sort of thing has always existed in media, especially in recent times. |

Honestly I don't have qualms about the shit taste of Japan supporting these kind of things, though if they can only balanced their shit anime and decent anime production, then the industry could have been better. Seeing some studio like Manglobe and Artland who gives quality animes has gone bankrupt have reminded studios that shit anime makes money. Idealism and quality is fine, but Japan itself needs stress reliever, not a heavy story that adds more stress to their body, and Absurd Ecchi animes is one of them that relieves their stress. |

Well, there are two sides to the same discussion: First side, the existence of ecchi animes gives bad name to all animes, because people who don't know animes very well allways reference the ecchi ones when critisizing. Second side, people who don't watch animes don't care to know more about the media to be able to have a wise opinion. |

I personally don't watch ecchi because the female characters are the ones in "ecchi form". If there was a thing as "ecchi for male characters", I'd definitely watch it. But to make fun of someone's tastes is very sad. I have a saying "don't shit in someone's tastes because it's not your business". Ecchi doesn't give anime a bad name. I'm pretty sure the obvious conclusion is that your frustrations should probably lie with the people being ignorant on the topic rather than getting mad at the topic for those people being ignorant about it. At least that's the way people who make use of this line of logic and try to put it forth as an actual argument of sorts could handle this, without operating under the rather childlike delusion that tossing out the blame to a type of content for people being ignorant on it isn't a completely irrational behavior. And even worse, it just makes it come across more as narrative-spinning against a type of content that has the sheer audacity not to appeal to them, knowing the kind of people that tend to flock to AD at least, or just outright misdirected anger in the event they're being genuine about it and don't have some ulterior motive. I can't see one thread of credibility towards getting mad at ecchi for people like the one OP talks about existing. Shitpost thread is a shitpost thread, though, so not much can be done about that. A lack of decent reasoning seems pretty integral to these things. |

I bet that people consider anime porn because of ecchi shows. So we can say that ecchi is misrepresenting and distorting anime's reputation. But who cares ? This genre is heavily loved and really profitable. why would they stop producing it ? That's not a convincing reason. Anime is hated because of crazy weebs, ecchi is just a small reason among huge reasons. |

Answer: No. It really doesn't because there's shows that have ecchi, and they're actually good in a sense, good to decent might add. But despite ecchi having a lot of mediocre stuff, it doesn't necessarily give a bad name to the medium. |

Those people are just ignorant buffoons. And isn't anime growing in popularity anyway? I'd say it's close to leaving it's niche spot. And I have mentioned this before. They discriminate escapism, that they deny that some people doesn't see the same view as "2D tits>3D tits" and just made a prejudiced conclusion that anime is nothing but for kids. But isn't entertainment subjective in the first place? Who gives a fuck for what I enjoy? I like it cause I had fun. |
