Advanced search is giving me threads that has nothing to do with what I'm trying to search for. I noticed it a while earlier, but ignored it since I was only doing one word searches, but something this precise and all that..... not to mention, the thread I was searching for isn't in the list. |

Afaik (or at least as far as I noticed) the search only seems to search the thread titles (not the whole posts in the tread). Apparently it seems to search all the different words you put in the search box with "OR". Meaning if any (at least 1) appears in a thread title it will return that thread. And it will only return threads (not possible to show posts and searching for a user only gets you to their last post in that thread). Try to search only for "asleep" maybe - in your example. Words like "have" and "anime" (while searching in an anime forum like MAL) should get too many results. Should find you only threads with "asleep" in the thread title where you posted (if you search for user name = your name). Edit 1: Thread you were searching ... might be one of the thread that isn't show. I think search results are limited to a max amount and since you get too many other wrong results ... Yeah ... search on MAL really is bad. There even have been suggestions in the suggestions board on how to improve it. Edit 2: I checked/tried. Seems it also searches posts? With only your username + asleep I could find 1 thread where the asleep did not appear in the thread title. The thread you were searching ... I can only find it if I search without your username. Probably it hasn't enoug time passed yet since you posted there first. Takes some time until stuff appears in search. |

@AllenVonStein No, I'm not. The reason I advance search with the full thread title is to see whether or not I've posted in the thread before. Having to go through a bunch of thread titles only to see that the thread I'm searching for is not there is a waste of time. And my main problem is that the search function was working perfectly just a few days ago. If I searched using the full title of the thread and only that thread would come up. So either an update glitched up the advance search or this is the update itself (unlikely, considering there's no announcement). ----- @Luthandorius Before I searched for that thread, I was searching for my old posts. Searching using only the word "Discussion" brought up barely a few threads with the word "Discuss" (not "discussion"). This, despite the fact that I have posted in quite a few episode/chapter discussions, which should take priority. And again, it was working perfectly just a few days ago. |

Not sure if it's the same problem, but I just tried to search my recent posts through the "Forum Posts" profile link and threads from the Series Discussion (Episode/Chapter discussions) were not returned, despite being most of what I comment on. |

This is what I'm talking about: Exact thread title search for my comments and the thread doesn't come up at all. Yet I've clearly had an entire discussion in the thread. |

I am not sure, but think to remember that series/volume discussions are not taken into account for "[user] forum posts". Which is probably yet another reason why series discussion for anime from last season or older are so dead. It may or may not be like this for "forum games", too - only have vague memories about it. Moreover, it will only show 50 last topics it knows about, and it does not know about very recent posts/ will take about a day before it recognises posts. All in all, the forum search is very rudimentary. So much that for some searches (content) I prefer to use google with site:myanimelist.net [searchterm] Sadly, that way I can not use "search by user" nor restrict the search to some certain section of MAL forums. :| |

@BannoBunka_snork can confirm that Episode/Chapter Discussions definitely used to come up on advanced search. The forum search function really needs some more attention. We could do with sorting, searching withing a specific thread for all our posts (mangafox has this, if I remember correct). Alternatively, can't we just get a button next to the thread title to show that we have posted in it already? It was tedious enough to advance search it before, its even more a pain now. |

I constantly use that link from the profile to find my latest comments, and I mostly post on the Series Discussion section. EDIT: Also, the results used to be returned ordered from most recent last comment to oldest last comment. Now it seems to follow some other logic (if any). Since we can't really ask for more results, maybe the ones we're missing are still there, but further down the list? |

yhunata, Tulicloure, Sapewloth Thanks for correcting me and avoiding confusion spreading from my false information. And good to learn that at least that was working, once. (now I am worrying about my memory ...) --------------------------- Aaand, now it has hit me, too. Clicking the "forum posts" link from my profile gets me - i am not sure, are those my oldest 50 posts ever, or sth. like that ? I actually use that link relatively often, and I think it was about yesterday when it still worked as expected. |

Up to monday morning (GMT+1), I could "stalk" any new Gundam post in an episode discussion by searching the word in the search window, after selecting "Forum". Yesterday evening, it wasn't working like this anymore: excluding every episode/chapter discussion thread, it only showed threads with the word in the title and starting with the older thread. Sadly, I assume the same as Sapewloth. |

The devs are currently working on the backend of the forum search, which will make improving the search and adding new features to it more easier in the future. We're aware that there are some issues with the search right now, the devs are working on it to fix them. |

I just wanted to ask this. Good thing I checked if there's a topic already. But is it possible (or will it be, after the glitch is fixed) to see your posts on the forum? And to view them as posts, not as topics you've been writing in? Like on many other forums. |

If you are going to fix this, then I'd go with SphinxSearch. It does an excellent job with things like forums where the postings are stored in a database. The search function here is pretty poor even in comparison to ones like phpBB and vBulletin which aren't that great either. |

The backend of the forum search has been changed because the old one had too many limitations on functionality. With the new backend it will be easier to improve the forum search. Some improvements have already been made, for example ignored topics are not shown in search results and you don't have to wait 5 seconds between searches anymore. Unfortunately it seems that fixing the bugs that appeared takes longer than expected, also because there are other tasks that have a high priority. My current information is that the bugs are currently being worked on and that the fixes will probably be released in 1-2 weeks (unless new problems appear). |

@yhunata @Rei366 @Sapewloth To be clear, Luna and the other administrative staff (me included) have no control over the dev team. This means we don't fix bugs, we don't decide when current bugs get fixed, and we don't decide how they're fixed. We report problems and give suggestions, and that is the extent of our involvement. So when you lash out at admins for site bugs—such as spamming mentions of them in regards to a problem they're aware has not been fixed yet—all it does is create unnecessary friction over a problem neither you nor we can solve. I'll make a post based on my recent discussions with the dev team once I've freed up my workload from some other tasks. |

In the end, those 3 paragraphs can be summarised by Luna's two sentences. While I don't mind you posting, asking for an update, I do mind posts like this: yhunata said: Nothing in the rules says that I can't badger the admins until they give an answer. @Luna yhunata said: Then they're gonna have to do with getting annoyed. @Kineta Thank you for your answer. The only thing I was asking for (to an administrator, right) was if the programmers were trying to drown the fish. Calling an admin name about that was because I thought they were the "bridge" betweenusers and makers. |
Apr 12, 2017 3:41 PM
#46
@Rei366 I definitely agree that we're the bridge, or in another metaphor, the messengers. So please remember to not shoot us ;) ---- Fixing the forum search is a long struggle, and I think the amount of effort to fix it was a bit underestimated at first by all of us. We've seen some changes to it pushed to the site, and the staff have tested some other changes in development that haven't fixed the problems either. Part of the reason that this is taking so long, is that the advanced search has a number of different query types: 1a/2a - Search by keyword 1b - Find posts by user 1c - Find posts by user with keyword 2b - Find threads started by user 2c - Find threads started by user with keyword Our problems are multi-pronged and apply to all query types: 1b/2b doesn't show all recent posts/threads by user 1c/2c builds off of 1b/2b and doesn't show all posts/threads matching the keywords 1a/2a give variable results with the fuzzy search For a while, the dev team was trying to improve/tweak 1a/2a while also fixing 1bc/2bc. Now they're entirely focusing on only fixing 1bc/2bc first. After a detailed discussion yesterday, I was notified it could take up to 6 weeks to fix 1bc/2bc alone. I'll be the first to admit and agree that this timeline is very frustrating. The first post in this thread is from October, so we've been fighting these issues now for 6 months. That's really annoying, both from a user and a moderator perspective. Our forum mods obviously use the search to do their jobs. You may ask, why can't it just be changed back to how it used to be? This isn't possible. Too much has changed on the backend and we need to struggle forwards. You may ask, why were these changes necessary in the first place? Most of MAL was coded back in the mid/late-2000s by Xinil. It's 2017. Our backend needs to be upgraded to meet with both current times and our server demands due to our now large community. Unfortunately, there's nothing more we can do aside from being patient. Please be assured that the admins have made it clear that this task is of high priority. We can't stop all development/bug fixes everywhere else on the site until this is fixed (that's not rational), but as much time as possible is being dedicated to it. The admin team will keep communicating with the devs. If you'd like another update before we post anything else, a simple "Anything new to share with us? @Kineta" will suffice. Please have confidence that we're in this group torture session together. |

@Kineta and @yhunata Does it still work in the same way? Back then, I was able to track episode threads with a partial name like "Gundam ZZ" or "Zeta Gundam" but now only the second one gives appropriate results. The researches I used the most aren't giving any ep discussion: "Gundam" or "Gundam discussion". Also, were results always limited to a single page? |
