What are some of your favourite anime character designs of all time? Open to any and every opinion out there!

Personally, I feel like I could go on and on about some of my personal favourites and it's extremely hard to think of all of them off the top. There are some extremely MASTERFUL designs that have been presented to the anime world but here are some that I thought of pretty much immediately after the question came to mind:

For those who have seen Bleach, I think we can all agree that they've got a lot of amazing character designs within the series. One of my favourites has got to be Ichigo's Final Getsuga Tenshou:

Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works
Once again, great character designs, really loved Berserker though. I think maybe it was the fact that he was so agile for such a big built character:

HunterxHunter - Killua (Godspeed was crazy):

Mobu at 100% - Mob Psycho 100:

Last but not least:

Monogatari has my favorite character designs ever like, in general. But, if you want some isolated cool-looking charas that I particularly like, here are a few:

Long-haired Haruhi

My man Kong Wenge sexy af

Shinobu with short hair aka the most adorable thing in the entire universe

Jacuzzi Splot, who is probably the only person in the world who has a tattoo on his face and doesn't look retarded

The mature version of Akari Mizunashi

And, lastly, Togame with, again, short hair. God bless Nisio Isin and that fetish of his

Shinobu and Togame are definitely great, I like the long haired Togame and the adult Shinobu designs better though.

I will mix some manga, as I find it difficult to separate both manga and anime

I like Kengo Hanasawa's crude style, combined with his kinda-autobiographical protagonists. Hideo Suzuki is a personal favorite:

I recognize my bias for more life-like design instead of over-the-top weird colored characters. The Namba Brothers from Space Brothers also are worth mentioning in that category

Also from Space Brothers, Serika Itou. Something is really refreshing about her, a really pure and well intended character, and her design transmits exactly that

And from Neon Genesis Evangelion, my long standing gold standard, Rei Ayanami

Maria and Kobato from Haganai are my two favorites in specifics. Haganai itself has my favorite character designs as well. And their designer, Buriki, has a fantastic sense of clothing style that makes all of the characters from Haganai - and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Denpa Onna - have such a distinguishable and memorable look that they completely own.

People really need more Buriki to be in their lives tbh. Or at least I want more Buriki in my life, fuck it if anybody else doesn't.

That's more a character designer/artist than a specific design, but the two works I've seen with Buriki character designs are two of my favorites for designs.

And like, I feel like his strong suit lies primarily with clothing choices. Maria's design is so unforgettable to me, primarily because of how stylish and sexycute her nun habit looks, but at the same time, it's something that I think really only works when I imagine her - or by extension, Kate, who looks similar enough to her - in it. If I try to imagine Kobato in Maria's outfit, it doesn't fit. In the same vein, imagining Maria in Kobato's lolita gothic look seems out of place and strange.

Like, I imagine Kobato with her hair down, flowing out the back like it does with Maria, while Maria is in pigtails with the eye color contacts in and it feels outright jarring to me. Maybe it's because the blonde pigtails go so well with the lolita gothic look whereas Maria's white hair and blue eyes seem to work with her nun's habit so perfectly. The outfits they were are totally owned by them. And Kate.

And I consider clothes to be a part of the design as much as anything else, which might be why both of the series I've seen where the source had character designs by him both stick out to me as two of my absolute favorites for character designs. Something I really like about Buriki's work - primarily in Haganai, but it's present in Denpa Onna as well - is the use of accessories and wardrobe changes. Sena in particular is a great example of this:

And they're not even limited by artstyle, the same characters can be drawn in totally different ways and still look absolutely great. An example of this would be Itachi drawing the same characters in the manga adaptation of Haganai:

Which is actually what made me take notice of him. It wasn't the art that made the characters look good, it was the clothes they wore and how they just completely owned every which way they looked. They don't have that flashiness and over the top hairstyles you'll see in shounen anime, but they're fashionable as fuck, man.

Also, while I'm not sure I'd say I love it like I do any of Haganai's character designs, Kokonotsu in Dagashi Kashi is very memorable to me because he reminds me a lot of how I look irl, so I've actually toyed around with using him as an avatar before because of that, but backed down because cute girls > all. That's just a more "this was a very memorable design" to me than "this was one of my favorites" tho.

I think Yuu Kamiya is the best of the best.

Cause we have

I mean, NOBODY looks boring; this guy oozes with creativity. He could have chosen to make Sora look boring since he's "just the male lead the fanbase wouldn't care about" BUT HE DOESN'T.

He makes everyone look AMAZING.

LOOK AT JIBIRU FFS.

How do you even come up with a design like that!?

All other character artists should BOW to this man's superior skills.

I generally find the character designs in most Madhouse, Production IG, and UFO Table works to be the most appealing.

Also a lot of H Manga authors generally draw very agreeable looking characters. I am a fan of Gunma Kisaragi and Yuuki Seto's character designs for instance.

I really like the character designs of Boku no Hero Academia characters. If you read the manga, you'll see extra author stuff at the end that shows how much thoughts were put into the designs.

For example, Aizawa Shouta's design. He wears the usual antisocial black get-up, but he also wears his weapon around his neck like a scarf. The goggles both look cool and useful because they block his eyes from the enemies view. His power is maintaining eye-contact and erasing the others' quriks, so making the villains unable to see his eyes can be super helpful in melee situations

For the girls I love Aizu's design, but I also love Ochako Urakara's design:

Her hero outfit and that hair shows her bubbly personality and the shoes can cushion her jumps when she lets go of her control on gravity. She is also one of the practical heroes who wears and actual helmet and visor that'll protect her more than a cool but plastic mask would.

I guess, individual, interesting, recognizable and beautiful character designs is the way to go? Ever looked at a character and thought: That's lazy and I don't expect more from the anime? XD
Nevertheless, I like the more down to earth designs as well. They should have the "vibe" of being interesting and individual. Don't know how to describe it. It depends on the character.

No, ranking, just a list:

Youko, Juuni Kokki. She has an individual design and her armor is respectable! XD She's not overly cute and not ridiculous beautiful, but she actually is still kinda pretty, just more on the normal, real side. I wanna see more female characters like her.

Mikasa, Attack on Titan. The same reasons. She is beautiful (okay, she is more beautiful than Youko XD), but it's not exaggerated. The uniforms per se are great and the women got the same uniform, which is a respectable and good looking one.

Taichi, Digimon Tri - puberty hit him hard? XD
No kidding, I really find his new character design both great and iconic.

Yato, Noragami. That blue eyes tho. Also his clothes, both the modern and the Yukata.

Allen, D. Gray-Man. He has a very interesting and cute design.

Mika, Owari no Seraph. Same as Allen. Also, I like the vampire uniform and he's even more beautiful in the manga. XD

Kikyo, Inuyasha. I love the Chihaya / Miko clothing very much, she is beautiful and graceful. Like her bow and arrow and her hair style. And she had her ... uhm I don't know how to call them in English. Something like soul collectors.

San, Mononoke Hime, strong, beautiful, clothes are great

Yona, Akatsuki no Yona, like Youko's little sister. XD

Bishamon, Noragami. She is beautiful and graceful, especially in her kimono and armor. I mean, the real, respectable armor. XD

Shion, No. 6, I really like the combination of hair and eye color, the patterns etc... also, he is cute. :D

Atsushi, Bungou Stray Dogs, the eyes, the hair style and color, his face... that's a great design!

Kaori, Shigatsu, it's a very simple yet interesting and very beautiful character design

Enma Ai, it's simple, scary and great. The round, red eyes with the pale skind and black hair

Rory, Gate, it's ... just great?

Yuu, Owari no Seraph, really like the mix of neon green and black with his green eyes.

Inuyasha, well... from Inuyasha? XD, his clothes, long white hair and the ears: very recognizable.

Extras:
I don't know, if they count.

Mewtwo, Pokemon, I don't know if it's only me, but I found Mewtwo's design very iconic and he had a great design. Like many hundred other Pokemon, but not all of them got a movie. XD

Kirara, Inuyasha, very cute and recogizable

Nyanko as Madara, Natsum Yuujinchou, oh jeez, Madara is GRACE

Hmm, well I've always thought that a character with a really great design is one whose identity you can tell from just a silhouette or a few identity markers.

So going by that judgment as well as my own personal preference ofc, I'd say that a lot of masterful character designs go to most of the One Piece characters. Not only do they somehow manage to look ridiculous and cool at the same time, but they're also instantly recognisable.
The ones that take the cake for me are:

Other than that, I'd go with:

Grimmjow (Bleach)

Shiro (Deadman Wonderland)

Rohan Kishibe (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Princess of the Crystal (Mawaru Penguindrum)

Jotaro Kujo (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Asui Tsuyu (My Hero Academia)

Hatsume Mei (My Hero Academia)

Stein (Soul Eater)

Katanagatari's character designs are some of the best and most fitting I've seen in the medium, so much so that I could probably devote my whole post to pictures of them, though I'll try to restrain myself:

Heartcatch Precure!'s character designs, particularly the Precure designs, are really great. They have these cool serpentine-like curves throughout them yet they manage to look cute, and their low line count is apparently the reason why Heartcatch is so superbly animated too.

Those are the main two I want to highlight for the moment since finding good example pics is time consuming. Many battle shounen and fantasy shows have great character designs, but Shingeki no Kyojin in particular has some fantastic ones. Cardcaptor Sakura has the best costume designs I've seen in anything, and there's also more subdued character designs that are great like in Cowboy Bebop.

Personally I really like the designs of Eikichi Onizuka and Takeo Gouda, both designs, while simple and easy to remember, fit their character perfectly and not only make them feel unique, but their designs also add to the characters themselves.

madoka magiica, the monogatari series, alien nine, diebuster, kill la kill, gurren lagann, getter robo armageddon, tailenders, redline, k-on, lucky star, chuu2, beyond the boundary, jojo's bizarre adventure, flip flappers, concrete revolutio and lots of others. there are a lot of very wholesome and cool designs amongst all the generic stuff

there are also various character designs that stand out in their respective anime/franchises, like nagato from the haruhi suzumiya franchise, komugi from soultaker and nurse witch komugi-chan, nanoha and fate from lyrical nanoha, takkun and haruko from flcl, shiro from deadman wonderland etc.

I don't know about "masterful", but if we talk by character designs I like, then:

The designs of Katanagatari (like @TripleSRank has mentioned) are really good, but really good. Like I said in a post some weeks ago, it looks like if the characters were especifically designed to fit the show. The simplistic, yet at the same time detailed designs are a delight to watch, and the color palette feels right and fitting. Also, all the important characters looks unique, from the Maniwas with those flamboyant costumes, to Emonzaemon with his suit and mask, to Togame, with her white hair and red eyes, who is, imo, one of the most pleasant designs I have ever watched in an anime.
She is just a treat to watch.
The eyes of the characters are also noteworthy to mention, because how diverse and unique they look. That thing also made the characters have more personality, like if every one of them was unique and unrepeatable.

The Monogatari Series has a lot of designs I love, but I will mention only two. The first is Kiss-Shot (yes, Kiss-Shot, not Shinobu), because her design it's just great. She is not only hot, but her dress fits her design eprfectly, she has the vibes of being one of those old-school, ruthless vampires, and she also has an air of respect and might to her, like if you shouldn't mess with her (who makes her debut in Kizumonogatari very ironic)
And there is Kaiki. I'm a sucker for villains wearing suits. I'm an even bigger sucker for villains who waers suits and have a cool design alongside it. And Kaiki fits this. Apart of his suit, his pale skin, his baggy eyes, that devilesque hairstyle... I love the gloomy feeling Kaiki gives in every one of his appearence (who is even enhanced by his great leitmotif and the dispassionate performance of his voice actor), is like if he was a grave digger, and fits his sinister, conman persona to a T. Posibbly one of the best designed villains ever made.

OP already mentioned Fate, and, yes, Fate has a lot of awesome charatcer designs, but my favourite one is obviously the one of my boy GARcher.
Everything in this fucker screams badass, from his armor, to his red sleeves, to his boots, to his white hair, to that dark skin, to his expressions, everything. It's one of those character designs whom I fall in love at the first sight in the first scene he appeared. I knew I would like him since his first appearence, and, oh, boy, if I was right.

Just like Fate, Magi is full of badass designs, and I would spend hours describing how badass they are, so I will mention the one I like the most, who is Kougyoku's one.
I love both her normal outfit and her Djinn Equip mode. Her standard outfit it's just so cute and adorable, her hair color it's good, and the clothes she wars makes her look fluffy and shy.
Then you have the Djinn Equip, who looks really badass and gives her a beautiful blue hair.
Simply wonderful.

Speaking of villain with suits, Kira from JoJo is another great example. This man might me a hand-fetishistic serial killer, but Hell if he doesn't knows how to dress well. Unlike Kaiki, Kira instead is an stylish man with a very good sense of fashion. In a world when characters wears the most flamboyant clothes ever imagined (coughFugocough), Kira stands out as probably the most stylish out of them all.
Then he gets the Bite the Dust design, when he manages to combine JoJo's ridiculous hairstyles with his fashionable persona, with fitting results.

But I don't want to limit myself to human-like characters only. Evangelion, by example, has one of the best designs of both mechas and monsters I have ever seen in an anime (along with Claymore). The Unit 01 is the most badass-looking Mecha I've ever seen.
The color palette is good, the humanoid but at the same time inhumane aspect makes it looks intimidating, that dinosaur-like head is awesome, and that without talking about it Berserk mode. What an intimidating fucker.
The Mass Produced Evas are also well-designed. They manage to draw well the line between cool and creepy as hell, with that angelesque aspect, mixed with those grinning and manacing mouths. The result overall is like if they were vicious birds of prey.
The Angels are no slouch in this either. Every one of them is unique, strange, sometimes badass, sometimes scary, and sometimes... even adorable. They were very awesome overall.

I could pass hours talking about designs I like, but I think the ones I mentioned are enough.
