Still kinda lost in the whole scheme of things, don't really have a timeframe from last episode to now. Also there was a weird spirit thing that helped the princess with no explanation.

Still a fun episode that peaked my interest.

I'm not talking about visual quality, because that's already a given. I'm just afraid the story will turn out to be pretty meh and there won't be more reasons to watch it other than the visuals.

Well, it seems that they're going to change the story by involving Velvet who's the protagonist for the upcoming tales game. Also, at the end of the episode, Alisha never asked MC if he was the shepard in the game so we can already see some changes there.

Not all that surprising considering this is coming from the same studio that is responsible for the Fate anime. That, coupled with the fact that it's adapting by far the worst and most tedious Tales game and we got ourselves a show that could probably act as an alternative for sleeping pills.

This was a lot better than I expected! Gosh now so much makes sense from the game wooooo >o<

One thing that worries me though, is seeing the "Episodes: 12", it CAN'T possibly be only 12 episodes......RIGHT.................RIIGHT?

12 episode this season, another 13 in winter.

Anyway,

I love how they finally explained how Alisha got to where she is in the game. I hope they keep up the quality of the animation too.

Also extra points for that ending skit. hahaha.

Where is everyone hearing that it will be 25 episodes? I would love for this to be true, I just haven't seen anything about it myself outside of what people are saying in this thread.

Animation amazing as usual, was hoping they would have gone a bit quicker through this part with the OVA being released before but was nice to see the extra details not explained in the game.

If it was 12 episodes there would be 0 chance the pacing would be this slow

It's nice seeing them actually expand upon the beginning events of the game that were never explained. The "are you a Shepherd?" part caught me off guard since it isn't in the game, but it makes sense when you think about it. She passed out in a ruin that is essentially a shrine to the Shepherd, and she wakes up to another human, it's possible she thought he was a Shepherd who was just living in the ruins or something.

Great visuals as usual. I don't see how anybody could complain about the bugs at the beginning or any of the backgrounds (minus the mountain-hopping scene- that was admittedly pretty bad). The OP is still the best one of this season imo, with the new Jojo OP being a close second.

I'm really excited to see how they plan on incorporating Velvet into the story. 9/10 so far (including Prologue), and hopefully it can stay consistent.

Great episode.
I kinda had some mixed feelings at the beggining, cause even though I wanted to know how Alisha passed out in the temple, I also really wanted to cut to Sorey's introduction. Well, that's not a complaint. In the end I got what I wanted xD

@Dab1za9 @Fai Thank you, I was wondering because my only experience of their works so far was their cinema series and it didn't look like that. (but I know you can't compare TV and movies)

"pretty" is still a strong word here, I find. The characters? Yes, but everything else goes from repulsive to ugly. I thought characters alone don't make all the "visual aspect" of an animation.

But this
Every show they made have different visual style
they all look same-y and use the same tricks and drawing style.

is pretty contradictory. ^^" (I suppose I'll see it myself when I'll force me back into Fate Stay Cie, but I fear a strong "computer presence" if this is what people today call well - animated)

That was a good episode.

The animation and art are lovely, These environments really give of a real adventurous feel, Makes me feel like playing am Rpg xD.

The bug scene was disgusting, I hate bugs :3

Seems like most of the story is going to be based around a certain prophecy I guess, The so called Shepard.

It's been made quite clear that Mikleo isn't human, What species is he? Even Sorey for that matter is he human or not?:o

Alisha and Sorey finally meet, She was quite quick in questioning whether Sorey was the Shepard though. I suppose that shows the amount of faith she's put into this Shepard.

I'm quite interested in how this gonna play out, The world lore is quite intriguing, I should really buy the game.

This anime is suppose to replace the game if I recall correctly.

I'm glad to hear this is split cour. 12 episode wouldn't be enough for the stuff that happens in the game. I do love the animation though. Alisha was always my favorite character in Zestiria, so seeing more screen time of her is great, though a bit sad since she suffers a lot :c

I also love the little details they added, like the bridge skit scene, the ED resembling the credits of the game, and the Skit at the end. These kind of things are what touch the heart and make you appreciate the effort they are putting.

5/5 for me

it is annoying to hear the hero be called Slei/Sley/Surei and read at the same time Sorey.

It's the official romanization of his name, unfortunately. It throws me off too, because there's just no way that the 'o' in 'Sorey' would be silent. Well I guess if you pronounce 'Sorey' fast enough then if sounds very similar to the kana spelling of Sorey. but still noticeably different

I agree that the 3DCGI bgs are ugly. Not all of it, but it's incredibly noticeable when it's landscape. Not a huge problem I guess, but I'm not a fan of ufo's usage of 3D landscapes. Oh yeah and ofc the bugs, they look like those fake plastic bugs.

As for the pacing, I like it, expanding upon the OVA is good, instead of just seeing almost everything the same or things getting cut out. So far, so good.

Also, can't get over that OP, FLOW <3

I'm really interested to see how this changes compared to the game. It's been pretty close to the game so far besides Alisha asking Sorey right away if he's a Shepherd. I only have 20 hours in the game I gotta finish it so I can compare how they change things. OH and I love the ED convo they had just like in the game. I hope the end of every episode has that.

Some of the landscape shots were seriously stunning, this is seriously worth watching based on that alone. As for the rest, I'm not sure why the girl randomly asked the dude if he's the shepherd, but other than that this remains very promising.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

Fantastic adaptation of the game for this episode, loved seeing what Alisha went through before meeting Sorey and Mikleo since the game never showed it. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that they're using SKITS for the ending previews, it makes it feel like a true extension of the game, now I have to watch everyone each week. Can't wait for best girl Edna to show up, her banter with Mikleo is always hilarious.

Princess Alisha can't seem to catch a break. Getting attacked by thousands of bugs, nearly struck by lightning & falling to the ground.

Nice to see Sorey & Mikleo finally meet Alisha.

Cool to see the preview like the little conversations in the Tales games. It's the little things.

Now we've finally arrived at the place where the old Zestria OVA meets up.
Looking forward to getting past this point, since I'm getting a sense of Deja vu for this part.
I swear Alisha must be one of the luckiest girls on the planet. falls twice on her head from mad heights and narrowly avoids getting struck by that lightening security system (she was the only object on that platform wearing metal, and still didn't get struck by electricity) and still comes out relatively unscathed.

Just my theory, but I think that the "are you a Shepherd?" part makes sense in the sense that she passed out in a ruin that is essentially a shrine to the Shepherd, and she wakes up to another human, it's possible she thought he was a Shepherd who was just living in the ruins or something. Especially considering there shouldn't be any normal humans in ruins in the mountains like that. Again, just my theory since that particular line of dialogue was not in the game.

I feel like I was playing the game again lol..but it's a nice thing the anime showing bit a bit some minor events around the characters, also was nice touch the preview of the next ep.

Still there's one particular thing I don't like in the game and occurs in the anime, the music that plays LOUD in the middle of the dialogues this is terrible..

Haha these double standards trigger me every time. Just the other day he was saying how good everything in Prillya ep1 looks good and amazing, even though by all rights the cgi there is pretty low quality and undetailed. One really needs to look at the difference between those posts, its like split personality.
Idk, these "ufo sucks" , "silver link is perfect" posts just baffle me.

Anyway, backgrounds were quite amazing like always, heres a small album from this ep.

Next episode I think we might reach the point where OVA ends. It will play out differently I think, maybe gramps is gonna kick ass. He did say "he will show no mercy".

normally i'd agree with this if it was exact copy of the game but it would of been a major oversight for them to just do that,it's to early to say but they already making changes hopefully they end up flushing out the story and make it more interesting seeing how it is serving as a build up for berseria.

Oh dear, that felt great to watch. From beginning to end, I enjoyed it. It was nice to see how Alisha actually ended up there, even if it started with her being terrorized by an army of bugs. And I also found myself amused by the Normin at her side.

Like others, I also absolutely loved the Skit at the end. It was lovely.

And though, I do think I prefer the Opening, I really enjoyed the Ending as well, especially since it slightly reminds me of the normal Tales Of Series Endings. Visually, that is.

In any case, I'm looking forward to the next episode. As well as when some of the others start coming in.

The digital polish is commendable, considering CG's poor standings in anime in general, and for the most part, the animators for fight scenes needs to be commended too. However, I can't stress how under-whelmed I am with their character animation: the character models move like static robots when they are not fighting, they talk without emoting, they walk like they are being controlled by wires. Compare that with even Sansha Sanya's character models: they move freely around the digital space and fully emotive.

Sure, as a studio, ufotable has a pretty nice team for digital effects and perhaps a few very skilled action choreographers and animators , but its team of key and character animators are honestly mediocre at best.

Most animators in this episode were just promoted from in-between to KA, generalizing the whole team is weird especially considering most other studios don't have a team to begin with but mostly free lancers.

I am very much aware of the origins of the team. I am criticising those who worked on the episode, and the apparent lack of quality control, something a production sorely needs, if it decides to rely on freelancing for most of its brunt work.

Ufotable productions often features lacklustre character animation anyway, so this isn't new to me at all

You seem to have a weird idea of what 'good character animations' are. Characters acting all bubbly != good animations like in the unremarkable SoL you mentioned.
I haven't seen any moment where I thought they "needed" to show more emotion. They have a solid character design and portray them best within the confines of that style. I'm not even sure what you believe is "better", because even within just the 2 episodes we've watched, the characters showed wide array of emotions. Rosy cheeks and camera trained on faces 24/7 would be better? (i'm exaggerating)
Either way, you should've picked a better example to compare it to. Also this isn't an SoL or Comedy.

You can criticize them when they are trying to do something and failing at it, but they are doing and accomplishing exactly what they intend to, their shows like Fate/* or KnK dont have characters that turn into chibis and shit every other moment. They aim at having a polished and solid style, I'd say, and characters are as animated as they need to be. You can also look at Tales of Symphonia, which had a very similar animation and character design style.

I love that they're taking it slow as it should be in a 25 episode show.

So they expanded on her prologue and with that tied into the start of the game story. I was always wondering how Alisha got there and now having an explanation for that is really great.
