You don't. Instead you off yourself. I should know because I did so myself.

It depends on why you are watching anime? Simply for escapism or maybe to see an anime dealing with the same problems you have to face? When I am feeling depressed (an want to watch anime) I either watch an anime that deals with problems similar to mine or I watch some of the most heartwarming shows I can think of to atleast cheer me up a bit. I do not forget my depression while watching, I just try to 'cure' and 'deal' with it while watching.

If you just go down the path of escapism and enter a peaceful illusion as a substitute for your own hurtful existence, chances are that you will just feel even worse in the end if you don't find the balance. You should know yourself better than anyone else so it's really up to you. I personally think that watching anime simply for escapism is not the right way to deal with your problems. Sounds weird but anime can also have a therapeutic effect, just depends on you.

I don't understand the question tbh. Anime is just a medium for entertainment. Just like depressed people would do something they enjoy.

Anime acts as an escape. You forget your own problems, you forget the place you're in and immerse yourself in the anime you watch. It's a lot easier to feel neutral when watching anime.

Just watch an anime that will make you laugh, with that even though you are depressed you will still be able to at least lessen your depression or entertain yourself since watching anime can make you forget your problems.

I have Bipolar disorder 1. I have bouts of severe depression.

Depression as a symptom isn't about being sad necessarily. Often it is more like just not doing anything or being inactive, lacking energy to do things, boredom, agitation, social isolation, insomnia, sleeping too much, eating too much, eating too little, repeatedly going over thoughts, feeling worthless, helpless feelings, loss of interest in things..

Of course it can be about being incredibly sad.

Have you ever watched Neon Genesis Evangelion? I personally enjoyed watching it. I very much identified with Shinji's feelings. Not wanting to do what is expected of me, not being interested in doing things... even finding someone I like and then them not being who I thought they were and completely overblowing my reactions though obviously not to the same extent.

Sure running away from problems isn't healthy... but it was very nice to see that on the screen. I also enjoyed the other characters and their mental break downs.

A lot of anime is a fantasy. I know when I watch Sailor Moon, I think back to a happier time. And honestly, cosplaying Sailor Venus does if briefly, give me joy at the convention. Even if some people call me fat, most people are nice to me.

Anime is a community and it is a community that I for the most part fit into. And I think that is why depressed people and other mentally ill people gravitate to it.

Hopefully I have answered the question.
The anime community in a nutshell.

Anime is a form of entertainment. It is the same thing no matter what you are watching. Anime? TV series? Movies? All of them are the same for a depressed person. You can enjoy everything in the same way. It depends on what you like. If something helps a person to overcome his/her depression, they should keep watching it. (sorry for my bad english)

When I was in a deep depression it wasn't really about enjoying the anime. It was about escaping from reality for short bursts and forgetting my life. Honestly anime was one of the few things keeping me going. It also turned out to be a key factor to keep me from ending things. Welcome to the NHK meant a lot to me as a 22 year old with similar issues. Made me rethink things and work myself out of it.

I don't know if I have ever been depressed, but when I'm sick, watching a few episodes of a "cute girls doing cute things" anime warms me up and makes me happier.

I actually found Welcome to the NHK! really difficult to watch because of how relateable it was.

I get where you're coming from, but not everyone is ready or can easily have the mindset to see a doctor when they are in poor mental health. Some don't even have access to medical care due to lack of insurance. It's not always that simple, so chill.

Also even if you get help depression doesn't go away with one visit.

I have major depression and bipolar disorder. I use anime and manga as escapism like any other person. That never failed to help. My meds work wonders though, so I hardly have this prob anymore.

I guess i'am one of the few that can't watch anime when depressed, it's not while watching but after you finished you are back with the feelings you start and forget the show rather quickly.

Usually when depressed i tend to do some activity like cleaning, running or long walks.

I love Yamazaki's quote "A drama has a progressive thought, an emotional climax and a resolution, but our lives aren't like that. All we get day after day, are a bunch of vague anxieties that are never really resolved"
and Satou's final monologue about how he knows he'll still keep telling himself "he can't do it" again and again but even so he'll continue with his life.

Mm, as funky and weird as that show was at times, it had some great quotes and outlooks at life in it.

If you are depressed because of low serotonin, then you need medical and psychological help. Entertainment can help distract you.

If you are depressed because of life in general, then anime doesn't help. You have to be more active in life rather than running away from it. I didn't realize this for a long time. It is probably why entertainment doesn't do anything for me besides annoy me.

Thank you. Not as easy as one would think. Sadly it isn't as visible as cancer plus since its mental/emotional it can be very hard to understand, I don't even understand it. "Just getting over it" or "getting some pussy" simply shows the lack of understanding/willingness to understand a devastating thing like depression, especially if it formed during early years. Then, of course, you have people equating their hardships with yours, that probably makes the person fell weak for feeling the anguish they do.

You watch something that takes your mind off what is troubling you and you disappear into a world where you do not have to face your problems until your mind refocuses and you figure out how you can change the situation you are in.

Depression does not mean you can not enjoy things and in many ways we learn to appreciate the same things we do enjoy because they are usually what gets us out of my depressive state in the first place.

I just kinda do it because it's my hobby and what I love doing. During my toughest depression times I barely did anything else and the question was more like: How do you do anything else than watching anime/other stuff when you're depressed?
I never found out, I just started taking antidepressants but still kept watching the same amount of anime.
I probably regret this post by now.

When I'm depressed in either play Lillium or rewatch Elfin Lied and remind myself of something even more depressing and that my troubles pale in comparison. I was also going through a really rough time during school and so that is also one of my absolute lowest points in my life.

On the upside I play Aria tunes whenever I need to take a new look at things that have become mundane or stuff I should carry on with.
