Would the series be enjoyable? Would the series not be "Battle Shonen" anymore? Do such battle shonen series exist? Is "not so smart MC" generally more likable?

EDIT: the MC here are the characters with the most screen time.
eg: Luffy in OP, Naruto in Naruto, Natsu/Lucy(they have similar screen time) in FT, Ichigo in Bleach, Tsunna in Reborn, Nagisa /Korosenseii n Ass Class.

Then you get Mahou Sensei Negima. And some of my personal favorite fight scenes in battle manga happen. The Rakan match is still in my all time tops to this day.
I've officially sworn off of 2016.

But most of the time we were following Naruto's footstep and saw things around him tho., so that does not count.

Being cool headed all the time even if something bad happens is also not good.
There has to be mixture of every emotion, that's what a realistic person is like e.g.

Kenshin Himura is quite smart.

...........he's also quite no longer a teenager. lol

Is "not so smart MC" generally more likable?

Not really....but the reason it's so popular is to show character growth and maturity. The MC starts off as a reckless idiot teenager (or preteen) but he eventually becomes wiser by going through so many experiences.
unless you are Goku who is still as stupid as a brick.

EDIT: the MC here are the characters with the most screen time.

The word you are looking for is protagonist.

Battle shounen is not defined by the characteristics of it's protagonist. It's about being appealing, a hot blood person that goes with their guts and instincts is going to be more likable, and it gives more potential for growth and maturity.

It depends on what you mean by ''intelligent'' but main characters using strategies is not rare at all. From the MC examples you listed, Naruto used strategy often in his fights and were prominent in some of the biggest fights he had, vs Neji and vs Pain.

In battle series, the role of intelligent is usually reserved for the other main characters like Killua, Sasuke, Gokuedra, etc

He's still hot-headed. And Bleach battles are barely strategic; it's just a matter of butting heads.

Well, Edward Elric has the intelligence part down. The lack of restraint and his short temper is compensated by his (often) level headed brother, who himself is equally intelligent. So something like that already exists.

Yeah, raising his power level so high over his opponent that it became laughable sure is a complex strategy. Bordering on the Sun Tzu level.
Typically a strategy implies something like a plan, not just a powerup.

No I meant an example of him using that smart in an actual fight. Being good at training or achieving better results at it in a short period of time just means he has a natural talent for battle which is stated IIRC.

He isn't intelligent , he said it himself but he's quite the quick learner and know how to fight (he isn't as dumb as he said anyway)

Idk, kinda like them ready to get into a fight most of the time.

Naruto could use less screaming in the first half but I think he's at his best in Shippuden.

Goku is probably good as he is, always looking for a good fight and as an adult even holds back to gauge his enemies strength (the real problem is the fights go on too long, not Goku's jolly attitude to challenging the latest bringer of death)

Yuu from Owari no Seraph defiantly should be more used to leaving allies to save the safe members of his team, right now

battling wise ichigo is good at adapting to situations really fast. He used what he learned what urahara taught him during the renji fight by memorizing how many times renji can strike with his shikai and for Ikkaku he planned to wait for the perfect time to strike at him but this is all beginning stuff. Don't remember if he did similar feats later on.

Well i remember this:
-Against Ulquiorra he even angered him by saying he got use to his swordplay and speed.
-Against gin, through analysis he conludes that his bankai would be weaker at close quarters combat.
-fullbring, how about i throw that shuriken-shaped thing?

He doesn't have a high IQ but he's far from an idiot.

There are plenty of those already. I don't think they make the show more enjoyable, since in a lot of shounen with a hotheaded MC there's usually a character that falls into the intelligent and coolheaded category, even if they don't get as much screentime. Also, Nagisa and to a lesser extent Ichigo/Naruto(at least in the early parts of their series) are each either coolheaded or intelligent.

* Intelligent and cool-headed people don't get into as many fights. Unless you add a sufficiently compelling conflict into the setting, which will automatically make an anime better.

* Intelligent and cool-headed people might be harder to write. These qualities make a character a lot more likeable for readers who pride themselves on their intelligence and sanity, but are they really your target audience?

* On the good side, where a dumb MC needs a deus ex machina, a clever MC can rely on a cunning plan (which can involve revealing a carefully concealed beforehand deus ex machina in the critical moment or when the opponent becomes too confident)

* You can appeal to censorship boards and angry parents by saying your anime teaches the values of intelligence and self-control. These are pretty cool values. Just don't forget to make your MC a good guy as well, anime is full of "clever bad guys vs dumb good guys" plots, I hate that. Yes, I'm looking at you, Overlord.

Mathwizard said:

Quite a number of battle anime MCs are reasonably clever. Negi Springfield from Mahou Sensei Negima manga, Tatsuya from Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, Adlet from Rokka no Yuusha and Kamito from Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance immediately come to mind.
In general, these works aim for a slightly older audience than Naruto or Bleach (as evidenced by abundance of good-looking girls in the shows).

Joseph Joestar is also an inteligent shonen MC. Sure, he can be silly at times, but in a fight, you could never guess what he would pull on you (btw, I talk about Young Joseph).
