When I first skipped through the episode I thought someone had accidentally spliced an old episode with High School Star Musical and even got it again before realizing.

They don't need the whole idol parody sequence to make their point "no one cares about old series like this now", in fact, the whole sequence is so elaborated it already crossed the line of "just making fun of it' to 'look at all these references!

No, they need it because it's funny. I like how each of those characters was so cliche and exaggerated and yet true to similar anime. I liked how the episode kept throwing in popular anime tropes and characters and grew worse and worse until it exploded. It reminds me of what the industry does when they adapt these awfully generic light novels or make cookie-cutter shows. Except, now we see how this idea unravels or how these brothers do it badly. It shows you how they try to do something but fail (together) and what some of their characters are like (I'm assuming). If it's not your kind of humour it just isn't, but it's doing more than just shoveling in references.

If it continues like this I'll enjoy it greatly. It's good to see another show try for a Showa feel.

Don't know what to think of this. A bit too much gintama-style narration for me. Will see what they will do in future episodes. The idol thing was enjoyable, but it looks like that was for this episode only.

Ahhhhh it's finally here. So good.

My only worry about this was the Gintama director, but luckily the references and satire in this didn't feel as contrived, loved it from start to finish.

Again it completely overshadowed that it's supposed to be an adaptation. It's meant to have something relevant to the content in the source material, and I don't remember being pure meta is the point of the old series, no matter how it's presented. Sure, we all questioned what's the purpose of doing another adaptation again in this day and age or maybe it's just a bad idea from the start (then why make an anime out of it?) whether or not it's due to the fact that the material just doesn't work anymore (then try! You are the animator!) or the modern general audience just doesn't give a fuck anymore (very likely), but it's not an excuse for you to repeat what you did and good at in other titles that you've worked on. If this is an original anime with completely different characters and story that's meant to be a parody or satire of similar subject then it's doing just fine. But it's not, not when they have to issue an "apology" in the first episode.

What the hell this anime just hit me out of nowhere. I don't know why was still expecting something overly cliche even after they destroyed a meteor out of nowhere, until one of the brothers went showa era in the middle of a scene and I just absolutely lost it.

Well, I decided to watch this after I found out a writer for Binbougami ga (A show which I loved watching) was doing it.

Its so plainly obvious that its him doing it (With much less boob jokes though) because of the insane amount of references and very fast-paced and in your face comedy. And its fucking hilarious. (Though a bit too early to call it AOTS, as I don't know what'll happen next)

(Also, expecting DateYutaka to have a field day with this fucking insanity and it'll be hilarious too)

Oh my fucking God this show was funny. It's a better Attack on Titan parody than the actual official Attack on Titan parody airing this season.

Reverse harems, boy idols, BL, half-assed revivals of culturally irrelevant franchises, Love Live, Attack on Titan, bishie sport shows, cooking shows, Bleach, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, this show left no stone unturned. It's been so long since I last saw a parody anime that actually made me laugh.

I lost it when the guy dressed as Honoka came on screen did the 'Faito Dayo!' thing. If it stays this funny throughout its entirety it could be a contender for best show of the season.

That was a lot of fun! Very charming and I loved how it poked fun at many modern anime tropes.

Normally I'm not into referential comedy but it used them in a clever way, showing how badly adding in these tropes would effect the anime and how modernizing something can actually take away from what made them special to begin with. Very charming message and it handled it with wit.

Combined with the wacky visuals, fitting soundtrack and ridiculous characters, this seems like a series I'll have a lot of fun with.

you forgot about the scene right after the whole caos.

that alone changes completely the meaning of the parody scene.
even that type of comedy was a parody.

The scene they go back to black and white again? Just another self-referential joke, it's the same as what they've done during the previous sequence, again, just because it's self-proclaimed 'self-aware' doesn't mean it's funny, not even including an apology to Fujio Akatsuka.

look, i'm terrible at explaining things and you seem terrible at understanding them, as such i won't push the matter anymore, the only thing i can say has been bad of this episode is that they probably didn't show much of the actual anime, but then again it's the first episode so it's kind of forgivable(take it like a pre-release ova), so if you don't like it: fine, do as you wish, whatever i mean, just look at the scores, nobody disliked it until around the 50th vote, and there is ALWAYS someone who doesn't like everything, so fine be that person, it's your loss anyway.

z4k: i'd also add kaiji with the pachinko think, but that's kind of a long shot as it's more of a popular thing in japan.

You know, if you realize you are terrible at explaining stuff, then how can I possibly be terrible at understanding or even have a chance in understanding what you try to say? Just a thought. And I don't think I can lose much honestly, I already watched too much anime, good or bad, but thanks for being thoughtful.

katalism said:

Well that's exactly what I've mentioned before, they could've kept all the referential jokes in just the first half and devoted the rest to the actually content because does anybody still remember that it's supposed to be another adaptation of the manga? I mean it's an old series that I don't think anyone here besides me noticed and constructed expectations based on this simple fact, now everyone watched it is going to have different and possibly harmful expectations because apparently the referential humour works very well in this episode and people want to see more of that, but it's not what this adaptation is actually about and it's was meant as a joke that probably has nothing to do with the rest of the anime. I just can't ignore the fact that instead of establishing what kind of anime it will be in the beginning, they spent the whole episode waving around giving false impression. Whether the jokes work or not is subjective and mostly secondary. They're basically dicking around in the name of the deceased mangaka.

I hope that fully explained my side of the argument why I found this episode not effective and offensive to a certain extent. Whoever you are and whether or not you think my argument is well-constructed or well-elaborated is totally up to your judgment, I did my best to keep it concise and easy to understand. And if you disagree or like what they've done so far fine by me. And I'm sure someone out there is thinking "Look at this bastard who can't eve take a joke. What a loser." Even though Borat and Brüno are two of my favorite comedy movies of all time. How ironic.
