Not relevant to my shop lifting thread btw.

After Kissanime died recently, I saw a bunch of threads on MAL whining about it and asking for alternatives. Then some people start jumping in and saying that we should buy our anime instead, streaming or in DVDs.

Are you the type of person who would BUY digital goods, such as ebooks, anime, manga, video games, software and movies, EVEN if they can be obtained through pirating methods?

Personally, I do purchase manga, for collection purposes and I find it really fun to collect so for any series thats available in English, I purchase it. However, for other things such as software and anime, I don't have any intention of buying it. I know some people who choose to buy video games to support to makers. What about you guys?

Let's focus on anime and manga with me. I can stream anime and I can read manga online, often needed since I need manga translation.

I wouldn't buy either right now. However in the far future I might consider buying my top 10 anime, probably for collection if I moved on from anime already.

As long as it's manga or even figurine,I'm definitely buying it but on the anime videos ,as long as the anime are available through legal sites especially in my country, I'm definitely going to watch it there even though the video player sucks ass just to show my support to the industry for once.

I pirate things/use free streaming sites to find things i'd like to play/watch/listen to. If I like it, I usually go out and buy it eventually to support the devs/studios/ etc/. Same with music.

Yeah, me too. I always try it first, then I buy if I like.

I honestly do not understand people who blind buy anime/manga/dvds/books/games without already playing it first.

Yes, because I'm not making a thousand bucks per month. I couldn't even afford to buy a Playstation 3.

Steam sales are great though. They provide great opportunities to purchase games you can't pirate (yeah, not every game is piratable), and you even get to refund the game if you don't like it.

And sometimes, when I do get a little extra money on the hand and find a book or game that I really like and support, I'd probably pay for it as well. Otherwise, these are tough times man. Can't just go around paying for stuff. :P

It's saved me quite a bit of salty-mouth feelings from steam...particularly the indie and early access section.

I also buy a lot of shirts, hoodies, and other things to "advertise" bands, anime, etc. :)

I would, if only I could find physical copies of my favorite shows, etc. Too bad we have none here, or at the very least I couldn't find one.

Softwares however, I do pirate at times because they are freakin expensive.

I buy plenty of manga that I want to support while at the same time reading them online illegally, it's just a balance.

I rarely buy anime unless it's a series I really like and it has a reasonable price tag, usually Funimation titles since I'm not a DVD collector so I really don't want to pay $60-$100 for a BD containing 4 episodes and a bunch of promotional art (ex: Aniplex).

I do however have a Crunchyroll account so I watch any anime I plan to watch on there if it is available, the price point is very fair and being able to watch anime on my PS3 is a plus.

I only torrent series not available on CR or that I want to rewatch something in higher quality. I don't blind buy.

Some, because they're too expensive. (your vote)

as much as possible i use free softwares, the only pirate softwares i have this days is Windows 10 itself and Photoshop, the rest of the softwares i use are free and open source ones like LibreOffice as an alternative to Microsoft Office, still waiting for either ReactOS or HaikuOS to become stable so that i can replace my OS with free and open source alternative too, and nah i do not like LinuxOS since its hard to customize it with all the commandline jargons

and for digital entertainment i got no money to buy them so i pirate instead, they are too expensive as well

Depends on availability. If anime, manga and games are sold here in our place sure I'd buy it, but it isn't. They should make it easily to buy for the customer, I want to be the first to touch my goods. I'm leaving this here.

Most of the things I "illegally" download are things I would never pay for even if I couldn't ever get my hand on them otherwise. Business have no choice but tolerate people pirating their shits because creating a mean of completely stopping people from pirating their product sound good on paper but will be self destructive.

It's much more productive to let 1000 people download your game with each of them talking about it to at least another person each than forcing them to buy it considering only a handful of them will.

If you really want to go the buy everything physical legal authentic route, you'll probably be watching a lot less anime than you are now haha because of how damn expensive most of them are.

I think most anime fans on MAL anyway stream or download most of their anime illegally, but buy their favorite series and maybe some merchandise (figurines, posters, plushies) if they can afford that.

I'm lazy and don't give enough of a fuck to support anything just to support it. I go with what's most convenient. Sometimes that means paying for a service. I have a Crunchyroll subscription cause Crunchyroll is more convenient than pirating, whereas I don't have a Funimation subscription cause they're not more convenient than pirating.

Oh, and I do own a little bit of anime. Just the stuff I really love, like Steins;Gate and Brotherhood. That's for my own satisfaction.

It's not so relevant to me at this point in my life. It would not hurt me if torrent sites collapsed.
But I don't hate digital piracy. It's not fully negative.

I used to pirate a lot of video games, and I don't think there was anything wrong with what I did. It introduced me to franchises, and made me fans of some... the pirated games that I played excessively were the ones I ended up buying the sequels of, or related merchandise. Then, some time later, after I came into possession of much more money that could be readily spent on these kinds of things, I bought a couple of the games I had already played in order to experience the multi-player/ new updates/ nostalgia, add it to a collection, or just support the developers.
Pirating introduced me to great games and franchises which I would not have really cared about otherwise, and it bought money to those.
Pirating also warned me away from unfinished products which were very painful to play, and took money away from those.
So really, thanks to pirating, my money went into the gaming industry eventually, and to the right places in it.
Side note: using Steam frequently dramatically reduced the number of games I would pirate because it was a good and convenient service with lots of good and convenient deals.

But, you know, I haven't bought everything I have pirated. I haven't bought every movie I have enjoyed. Isn't that bad?
Well, no, not really. Pirating is like lighting your own candle using someone else's flame. It's different from stealing because nothing is actually 'taken' from the other person. They don't even lose profits which they would otherwise have if not for piracy, because I'm not likely to spend $20 on just any of the hundreds of movies I have thought were okay.
Side note: I go to the cinema for the cinema experience, and fund that, and I buy movies I think 'the best of the best' or 'worth collecting'.

It is nice if pirating brings something positive to an industry, but if one would never have bought anything positive without pirating, then it's not negative to the industry for one to do it.
Poor people barely hurt industries by pirating. Richer people don't necessarily hurt industries as individuals either.

While I'd love to buy anime and manga, it's simply way too expensive for me, and would take up way too much space if I bought everything I wanted to read/watch. Games I'll always buy, because first, they're digitally stored, and second because they go on sales (75% off).
Movies I'll either watch in the cinema or download for free. Once again, am not interested in having a bunch of DVDs and I don't know of the Steam equivalent for movies.
I barely listen to any music that's not from games or anime. I did buy all the Pokémon OST albums on iTunes.

The only thing I never pirate are video games. Nowadays they drop so quickly in their price so if I can't afford it on release I can just wait 2-3 months and get it for half the price. For music I mostly use streaming sites and when they don't have the band I search for I just pirate it. But if I really like a album I will also buy it. Just not that often.

The only thing I pretty much never buy is anime. The prices are just dumb. ~35€ for 3 episodes of anime? No, thank you. There are some pretty good-looking special editions though that I sometimes buy if the price is right.

A lot of anime title wouldn't pass the regulation here and yes they will search your shipment too, that is the strongest alibi I can have for torrenting anime. There are some anime distribution company back in the 90's, trying to test the water by releasing Evangelion and Bebop. It didn't go too well.. the content is heavily censored, and what I meant by censored is not blurred or black screen or anything, but a complete cut even at every Faye random boobs encounter which resulting in a totally messed up shows. I buy all the box set, and it was one of the biggest regret in my youth. Not to mention, end of Evangelion never passed the censor and didn't make it here..

However for manga we have a quite active local publishers that has been running for a couple of decades, so I buy almost all of my manga that is available locally as the censorship is not as bad as anime for reasons unknown. Manga is quite cheap here, I could buy two to four volume each weeks, and I used to share the loot with my sister and cousins, buying manga titles that we didn't already own. It's a shared library, our little treasure.

However, most thing that I had pirated is video games, for similar reason to anime, there is almost no legal distribution network here, and when they do they're ridiculously overpriced, thanks to our idiots in the government, video games are considered as luxury items, luxury tax doubled their original retail price, not to mention the shop owner also burdened the custom, shipping, and retail tax, yeah they also rigged it up for their profit. By the end of the entire process, one physical copy of a game could be priced more than four times the original. That is why publishers like Steam is a real blessing to our gaming community, but the greedy government is planning to create a new law set to motion next year to tax e-commerce so it would also applied to digital content distribution... they were just like those tentacles in hentai, fucked you up on every loophole.

I always think that 'piracy' is the best advertisement in the internet, it's like an unofficial free trial of their product, where their worth is measured by the satisfaction of their costumer. It is also the most accurate quality control that would never be officially recognized by the industry.

Linux probably would had overthrown Microsoft decade ago if only they strengthen the crackdown on bootlegged windows xp/vista worldwide. Apple probably gaining more market strength in the process. I always wondered about the numbers of PC worldwide that is using bootlegged microsoft windows in the last ten years, and how much richer Gates should be.

I recently bought Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works English Dub for over a $100. It's expensive as shit, I know but at the same time, it supports the makers of the show.

I also buy video games because I mostly play online with my friends. The only time I will pirate a video game is to demo it. *ahem Ubisoft and Call of Duty games ahem*

I missed those topics. But lol that people act like they can't find other streaming sites. I have three bookmarked. It's not that hard to find a site to watch anime. What the heck?

Anyways though I do both. I stream anime and I will buy it though i haven't brought a DVD in years but I have some on my Amazon wish list for when I can.

I mostly buy books since the kindle editions are cheaper and if I really like the book I will later buy it in paperback because I like to bring books with me to read if I am going somewhere where the wait is really long. Though if the book site I bookmarked has the book I found that I can't buy at the moment I will read it on there.
