Hey! So I'm thinking of starting to collect figurines, but I have one problem. I can't decide if I should unbox them or not! I know a lot of friends who collect actual American action figurea (star wars, star trek, ect.) Always keep there figures in boxes to save the value and collecting price of it and stuff like that. My question is, do anime collectors tend to do the same thing? Or do anime figurine buyers display there figurines More?

It depends on why you're buying them and your opinion on opening a gem. Firstly, I'm glad you've joined my ranks! Figurine collecting is super fun.

Now, I keep mine packaged. Displaying them is nice, but my figurines are still gems that are new.

Of course I unbox them. If I buy figures I do so with the intention to keep them. The fact that unboxing decreases their value doesn't even enter into it.

Well, I'm not selling mine (at least very likely I won't) and adore them, but the new effect is real. Plus, I'm always worried about breaking them.

If you know for sure that you're going to keep them for good, unbox them. Just put them away from the sunlight as far as possible and keep it in an out-of-reach (I have a cat) area, maybe a display case. If you're not so sure, keep them boxed for the time being, I guess.

Well, you're right about the not breaking them thing, the box would most likely keep your figure safe (unless it took a really hard hit) but then I heard from more experienced collectors that after a few years, it is NECESSARY to open the box. Something about gas and chemicals trapped in the confines of the box, I think anyone who prefers keeping their figurines in their original boxes should investigate.

Unbox. What looks nicer? A scale-model figure or a box?

In the same way, I keep my DVDs and BD in disc binders and tend to throw away the cheap plastic boxes. They just don't look nice for collecting purposes and, yes, why would I sell my favorites? Why would I pay $100 on a figure just to hope to get some % back in a few years. I can think of much better things to invest than that (and though figures do go "out of print" - more figures come out every day, reselling for the small percentage of super fanatical fans (that didn't buy it earlier... What?) just sounds tedious, to me.

Anyways, whatever you decide, welcome.

I got more figures on saturday by winning them, and I have not opened any. I still have lots that I won but none are open.

Not to sure I want to open or display them.

Only things I have unboxed are plastic models you have to build yourself like Gundam and Frame Arms.

I tend to leave alot of things in their packaging regardless of what they are, Even books and games. atleast till I plan to read them or play them.

Yes, I unbox all my figures, and then they go in my custom-made figure cabinet, which keeps them just as safe as their original boxes did.

I un-box them to look at them; but I box them back right afterwards! I'm looking to get a display cabinet soon because, I'm running out of shelf space.

Unboxed and displayed, because there wouldn't be any point in buying something I can't ever use for anything other than conversion into capitol if I'm really broke.

If you think you'll sell/trade them in a few years time then keep the box, but I suggest until then display it out of the box being sure to clean the figure at least twice a week.

I don't get why people think that you're a weeaboo if you collect anime figmas. You're buying what you love. It's just the same as to why we buy television or other things.

If a person has a lot gym equipment and supplements they get called juice heads, if it's guns and tactical equipment they get called gear queer, so on and so fourth. Not to say it's necessarily true it's just how a lot of people outside of the hobby see it because the negative part of the community that do act like that are usually the loudest.

I unboxed all the figures I got a while back, and while I don't regret it, make sure you clean them all the time so they stay nice. I recently bought a full collection of the vocaloid pop series figures, that I'm still debating unboxing. I think another shelf is in order.

Most of the Figures are not posable, one of them is too tall, and the others just fit so much better in my bookcase in their boxes than on a display case.

it all depends on what you buy. if you're getting $20 chinese knockoffs off of ebay then sure unbox them and display them loud n proud because the value will be no different in or out of box so you might as well get the most use out of 'em.

however if you're actually planning on dropping $100+ on a single authentic japanese figure then i wouldn't unbox them. it just depends on whether or not you care about keeping something so valuable in absolute mint condition or not. but my greatest suggestion would be just leave them in the box.

Just to make sure, you are aware that most online stores in Japan that specialize in selling Anime figures actually open them up to check for defects before selling them, right?

I don't have any yet, but I plan to buy my first one this summer. And I can't even imagine NOT unboxing it, it is supposed to look pretty on your shelf, and while boxed you don't see much of it. That's just my opinion though.

I'm fairly new to the figures collection thingy so I just have a few ones, but I haven't unboxed them so far. I'm thinking about doing it soon though.

I don't unbox figures that come with a card back/bubble cover. I do however unbox all my statues. High quality statues don't really lose too much value when opened and they look much better out of the box. Most people don't want to buy a sealed version off of an individual, unless the item goes for a similar price of an opened one or the item recently came out.

I know that with statues most people want them displayed. I bought my Shenmue Ryo Hazuki Exclusive sealed off a guy, but that was only because the seller sold it to me cheaper than what opened copies went for. Not really interested in buying new sold out statues. I'm essentially paying a premium to open it myself. I have no qualms buying new figures off retailers for retail value or less. It supports the industry.
