What, without any warning suddenly saying the site is closing? How bad is that!? Honestly there's always alternative solutions instead of just taking away something that a huge number of users relied on...... Disappointed

Without any warning? This thread is a warning that we'll be closing soon...

Sure you can, that's the magic of open source under GPL. rr- told me he'll start working on a basic how-to soon.

I'll reply to previous questions in a few hours.

I sure hope there will be a new "Malgraph" site.

I liked the site a lot and I was using it rather frequently as well, so it's a bit of shame that you've decided to close it down. Really nice of you to publish the source code, though, I'm sure there'll be at least one successor around pretty soon. Out of curiosity, what hardware were you running MALgraph on, anyway? I've been wondering for a while now, managing 200000 users doesn't seem to be something your average little private server would be able to handle all that easily.

Just be glad they did it in the first place. MALgraph isn't a right, it's a privledge. Don't get me wrong, I'm as bummed out as anyone else, this tool was literally over half the reason i stayed with MAL. I wish MAL would realize how many people enjoyed the features that malgraph had and introduce something similar to the main site but we're talking about MAL here so it'll likely never happen.

Well this sucks. I really hate ending my day on such a sour note... ugh.

P.S. I have the achievement "VHS master race", but no anime I've watched has ended before 1980. Or am I just an idiot who thinks that?

These are sad news indeed.
I've used MALgraph ever since its inception and prior to that, I had used Mathes' MALscore. As you well know, MALgraph's pedecessor had none of the fancy features that you developed over the years, but it was a great addition to MAL nonetheless already, since MAL didn't (and still doesn't) even provide its users with something as simple as a graph showing the individual distribution pattern of our scores. You can imagine how glad I was, when someone (that is: you) decided to take up Mathes' slack and reinstate that simple function. And then you proceeded to make your version of the statistics tool even more extensive and simply better than I would've ever imagined! Like many people, I especially enjoyed your addition of Achievements, those were a lot of fun. Over the years, I somehow have come to perceive MALgraph as an indispensable supplement to the bare-bones services of MAL and used it fairly regularly, so seeing it go really feels like losing a integral part of the site that I never would've expected to shut down as long as MAL itself didn't close up shop. That's how great of a tool your MALgraph was for me, it supplemented MAL perfectly. I can barely remember how life was before MALscore here, though it seems I'll find out soon enough how it'll be like to travel back to the stone age of MAL statistics...

I actually had one really early graph version of yours still saved, to wallow just a little more in nostalgia:
It's only been a little over three years since then, but it feels like you guys have always been there for us. You can bet you will be sorely missed. You do have my thanks, of course, for all your efforts of keeping MALgraph going and improving it for all those years, and I wish you best of luck to whatever your future endeavours may be. Now, if only we could get someone to follow in your footsteps just like you followed in the footsteps of Mathes...

I, too, would welcome it if MAL would actually integrate MALgraph (or something similar) to become an official part of the site itself, but realistically speaking it'll be a cold day in hell before that happens. There's a reason why Mathes, rr- and fri had to produce their own scripts, namely: MAL just cannot be bothered to improve the site's usability. They can barely be bothered to fix the most annoying bugs in a timely manner as it is.

How'd you even get here then?

And how about you read the club page, then click into MALgraph, enter your own name or someone elses(idk if they're still loading profiles and they're a bit buggy right now) and check it out.

Wouldn't it be easy to find someone else who'd continue your project? I'm sure that there are plenty of people with enough capabilities that would accept that.

Well they'd still have to pay for that site I believe. The code is open source so anyone who does have the capabilities can use their code to make another, they don' t need to search for one, one will use their code when they want to make one.

rr- completed the how-to, and it's available here: https://github.com/rr-/malgraph4/wiki/Hosting-your-own-MALgraph

Managing 200 000 users it not the difficult part. Managing 60 000 000 user list entries is. -- rr-

I don't know the host's setup details. It had about 15 GiB of storage space, which was constantly filling up by MALgraph's cache files (we store the generated pages so they don't eat up processing time until they grow old after 24 hours). There could only be one cron running at a time, and a single one could be run only once per 5 minutes. At least they had a quick reaction time to our issues, and often updated software to newest versions (our previous host was very slow to adapt PHP 5.5).
