i felt like the ending was a bit rushed and nows there's plot holes that require bridges for one to 100% understand what exactly happened. i know i am not the only person here who was confused. for instance, unlike the situation with Mai, there was no clear way to go save Ayu from her coma, and even if the headband was the key, where and how did Yuichi activate the trigger to enter Ayu's dream or whatever? i also feel like it would have been nice seeing Ayu wake up and have a solid reunion with everyone who cared about her, to sort of ease off the weight that had been crushing the viewers for the last couple episodes, i was not even 100% sure if the ending was reality or still a dream or something, but i guess it was real, but it was a weird fast forward from nothing and it's not as gratifying with the direction of confusion in the very last minutes of a series. aside from Makoto, everyone got a happy ending, thanks to magic wishes and miracles, and perhaps it's better that Makoto stayed dead, because she was just a fox who stole the identity of an existing human, so it's not like she was really a person, even so, Yuichi took good care of her in her last moments in that episode (i forgot what number that was). overall, i was happy with this series, it made me cry a little bit, not much, there was a couple convenient plot devices that i was a bit uneasy about, broke my "willing suspense of belief" that a car accident like that could happen during the evening, when most people are not even drinking heavily that time or day, nor does the road appear to be slippery, and that situation was completely unexplained how such a tragedy happened... also, the plot device that Ayu fell off the tree seemed a bit too convenient for the story, i mean, look at that tree, i wouldn't be able to climb a tree like that, especially not in winter, and yet Ayu did it often, so she had the skill to climb trees, and a gust of wind made her lose balance to the point that she couldn't grab onto the branch, or at least had tumbled when she got near the ground to reduce the impact? i've seen a guy backflip off of the top of a 2 story building and missed his landing, he hit almost face first into the ground but had a rolling motion, he got right back up and walked away (now, i don't know if he had any broken bones or brain damage after that, i merely saw this clip from watching Tosh.o) but still, how did that fall put Ayu into a coma? meh... i heard that originally in the VN and first series (which i refuse to even bother watching it, because Toei and Makoto Nakamura are horrible for what they did with the Clannad movie, not to mention Digimon seasons 3, 4, and 5) were different in a way that all the girl's arcs were disconnected from each other, but i like the decision made to change that, because it feels more special having them intertwined a bit, has a feeling of union among fellow souls, something like that. i suppose in conclusion, i would suggest this anime to friends and hope to rewatch again someday :) |

loved the series, but im a bit confused on a few things. 1.The demons Mai was fighting were in essence her imagination, which at first were the bulldozers and workers destroying the field they played in to make their high school, but due to her believing it so much, and due to her supernatural power, they sorta materialized, for at-least her and yuuichi? also, why did she stab herself? 2. makoto was a fox spirit, but how does she reappear near the end of the series when yuuiichi collapses in the snow, and what was the meaning of showing her laying unconscious in a field after she disappears at the end of her arc? 3.If Ayu was in a coma the entire time, how was she interacting with people, and talking like a normal person? im confused, that ending monologue by yuuichi made it seem like he imagined it all due to not wanting to accept reality, but then Ayu wouldn't have been able to interact with anyone, which she clearly does 4. somehow ayu makes a final wish to yuuichi, (something along the lines of 'i want the one dearest to me to be happy') which by default means all the sick/injured characters he knew magically recovered, is that right? it seemed a bit rushed. 5. why did yuuichi move back to that town, and why did he forget everything? 6. if akiko knew ayu was in a coma all along, why didn't she say anything? it would be awesome if anyone knew the answers, but overall, solid series, 9/10 |

So, what I'm thinking is, maybe we're never meant to know, because it makes you keep thinking about the show after it's finished, so that you don't forget. Maybe there are answers hidden within clannad if you look carefully enough. edit: now that i think about it, it makes the whole show like a dream. You wake up, but you can't really remember exactly what happened, you think that you just can't remember, but the dream was never actually that vivid. |

The Deus Ex Machina ending was annoying, but at least everyone got their happy ending (my theory on Makoto is that she was revived, but as a fox with no human memories, hence why we see a fox at the very end). 7/10. |

Let me first say that I gave the show an 8/10 because the show was sold to me as being based in reality. So I was surprised and slightly disappointed to see some of the situations the girls were in. Now I'll run through every arc of the show. 1. Makoto's Arc: Surprised me to the point where I thought I wouldn't like it, but I kinda did like it and got a little emotional toward the end. It felt like the loss of a pet, which is still sad. 2. Mai's Arc: Hated it. Complete nonsense. 3. Shiori's Arc: A little boring at times, but still got a little emotional. Also, I wanted to strangle Kaori. 4. Ayu's Arc: I sobbed a little bit every episode. It was a little confusing, but the emotions kept me engaged. Overall it was a pretty good show, but if Key visual novel adaptations are not entirely based in reality, I'll be slightly hesitant to watch Air and Clannad. |

That's because she behaved like a pet. Kinda' hard to tell her and Piro apart. 2. Nonsense!? Makoto (a FOX) became human. Shiori and Nayuki's mom survived. Vegetable Ayo woke up. I disagree, I think Mai had the best story. 3. Sure, would've been more amusing if KyoAni gave her a "aau, uguu or nyuu" catch phrase and a diaper. I liked it though. 4. Good arc. Irritating character. lol @ miracles & happy endings. A dream. Yeah, that's Kanon for ya. |

Overall, really glad I watched it. I should have watched before Clannad, as I am just coming off an AS rewatch, and didn't have enough tears left to cry for Kanon :( but overall, 8/10. Kanon was a good run, and I was really moved by a lot of the arcs, but unfortunately, I am an only child, and over half of the arc's play off sibling relationships. I was still really moved, but not as much as I would have hoped. :_( eldest said: loved the series, but im a bit confused on a few things. 6. if akiko knew ayu was in a coma all along, why didn't she say anything? it would be awesome if anyone knew the answers, but overall, solid series, 9/10 In response to eldest. And by golly did I write a bit... 1. You pretty much got it. Mai's power was supernatural, but was able to take physical form (why EXACTLY, I don't know, "Key Magic"?). She created the demons because she wanted Yuuichi, her only friend, to stay with her, and then when he abandoned her, she told herself that she had to fight. Fighting numbs the mind, so you don't think about the sadness. (Also, they were very "real" to everyone, just as her power was "real") Mai stabbing herself is likely something that she had thought about (just ending it all, and forgetting all the pain of this world), but never did because she continually felt she had to keep fighting the demons. Once she was rid of these things, she likely felt she was able to go through with it (A very common thing for those with Depression who find some small hope in medication or slightly feeling better) 2. Makoto was not really there with Yuuichi in the snow, that was just his thoughts drifting away and imagining her there, as he was planning to lie there and die, so he could go be with Ayu and Makoto. Makoto laying unconscious was just what Yuuichi would have wished for. Amano did ask him that. (Images are worth a thousand words, so showing her made a more powerful effect, if you caught it) 3. Ayu was much like a certain character in a coma from Clannad. She wanted to be with Yuuichi so badly that her spirit left her body, and took a temporal form. This is why, much like Makoto, she didn't remember everything. Also, I believe Ayu disappeared because Yuuichi (and Ayu herself) realized what had happened, and she chose to sacrifice that temporal form so her beloved could go on living a normal life. Also, after she decided not to see Yuuichi, she had no reason really to see anyone else. Yuuichi's soliloquy about reality was because he knew deep down about Ayu, and that she was not there, but didn't let himself believe it. 4. Ya, that one kinda throws off a lot of my theories as well, but essentially I understood that either everything happened in a dream (dislike that) OR Ayu was somehow connected to this town of miracles (much like Nagisa) and was able to grant one wish. Not a great ending IMHO, hence why only an 8. 5. Yuuichi moved back because ____ happened at home and he had to transfer, naturally it would be easiest to transfer where he didn't have to pay housing and knew people, so staying with Nayuki and Akiko made good sense. Yuuichi subconsciously blocked out all of those memories, as they were all very tragic, especially Ayu's story. That is an incredibly common human response to harsh trauma. 6. Akiko didn't say anything because they didn't want Yuuichi to go through the pain that he had earlier. It was an act of kindness. Also, if Yuuichi had found out, he would have to consciously make a choice to interact with Ayu. |

Makoto's arc was almost comical. It was emotional to some extent but the loss was of that a pet. Which was still pretty sad. Mai's arc was probably my favorite. Compelling back-stories and a high degree of emotional involvement. Shiori's arc had the most romance of all the arcs and probably touched me the most. However i hate kaori for her selfishness and neglectfulness for shiori. Poor jun, he should have chased sayuri instead. Uguu~ Ayu's fun and amusing but is a little weird to think of as the main female lead. I think Yuuichi/Mai or Yuuichi/Shiori could have a more believable romance than yuuichi/ayu. I was blown away with the kiss scene, totally unexpected. I always thought of ayu as someone yuuchi cares for a lot but like a father-daughter relationship. It was like imagining fuko/tomoya in a lovey dovey relationship which sends chills down my back. Out of all the girls Nayuki gets the least attention. Keeping in mind that they are cousins i still think that she could have been a potential girlfriend; although I don't think Yuuchi ever viewed it that way. i feel as though kanon 2006 couldn't make a choice to which girl yuuchi should sweep away. Yuuichi marries makoto then tells mai he loves her and dates shiori. One wrong move and this anime could've turned out to be something like school days. Kanon handled the tricky romance genre well and overall is an amazing anime 9/10 |

I just finished it. I have one question though. Is Fox Makoto dead? At the very last scene on Kanon(2006) there is a fox in the background behind the tree all blurred out. Is that Makoto or a different fox? |

Great series, I gave it a 9/10 for the story. I do love happy endings. I think for the most part Makoto was just the fox spirit that had fell in love with a human. It took the form of a human to be close to Yuichi and feel his love again. However in doing this Makoto would give up her memory and eventually her(physical) life. At least this is how it's put in Yuichi's world. As far as Ayu is concerned I believe that Yuichi loved her so much(more than he even realized). The trauma of Ayu's accident was the cause of his self imposed amnesia and delusional state of her and everyone's else's existence. However his love for them would not let them be totally forgotten after he returned to his aunt's home. He was not emotionally strong enough to handle all the buried memories at once, so as each character comes to him, they each have to go through the amnesia process with him since it's his dream. The one's that knew had to let him work through it so as not to send him into shock. His love for Ayu is the catalyst for his struggle to remember and accept the truth of the past. In the end it ended up not as bad as Yuichi thought, and it gave him hope. Oh and the end Ayu is older and grown. Even though she isn't taller, her body has filled out to that of a young woman(her arms and thighs are not skinny anymore). |

Ok I rekon this was a true work of art. Well put together; although, i did not quite understand the ending at first. I was able to after going back to previous episodes. Ayu arc was definately my favourite as a lot of twists came together with Mai arc being second. The thing i like about Kanon is I felt more connected to the characters than Clannad. I also liked the plot and thought everything fitted in perfectly. I enjoyed Ayu's coma story and how Yuichi repressed her accident; hence, his unexplainable amnesia. Fuck I was actually close to tears when Ayu fell off the tree, the way she smiled when she went into her coma and the fact that she was an astral projection the whole time was quite sad. I also liked the part where her last wish, which i'm guessing was to make Yuichi happy and hence; everyone else cured, which was the miracle Nayuki was talking about. I enjoyed all arcs. The only thing I would complain about was it got a bit boring at times and the ending was a bit rushed. I kinda wanted to see Ayu come out of her coma. But overall in some ways this beats 'After Story'; The only thing After Story has over this anime is a better story and more attatchment in terms of life and shit. 8.5/10. |

My expectations were a little high for this show since Clannad is my favorite anime. The story was okay. I wish they did more realistic stories. That's probably why I liked Shiori's arc the most. OST was great as expected. This was also a little more harem-y and so I felt the connection with the heroines was a little shallow. I liked the explanation for the title of the anime they gave while sitting at that cafe. |

YAY HAPPY ENDING!! :D And it didn't felt forced or rushed :3 Fortunatly, it ended in a happy ending because I am about to go to bed and if it was ending sadly, I'd surely have some trouble finding sleep. Now that I know that it ended that way, it's pretty much the opposite, which is good for me, since I have some insomnia lately. About the episode, it was really great. SO my theory on the coma was right. It was pretty much like one of the Clannad arc. It was cute to see Yuuichi cry like that, him that was always trying to keep it together, even in the tough moment. Why didn't Mai use some of her magic trick to help Ayu recover... It would have been less romantic if so :P I believe that the fox at the very end was Makoto :3 |

Overall I liked Kanon much more than Clannad. Cannot really compare it to Clannad AS since they are rather different. I rather liked how the story pieced together over the entire show, but sometimes I felt the pacing went up and down because of that. Personally I was most teary in the Makoto arc. Others not as much so that probably changed my experience as I watched it. The ending was a very nice happy ending so I'm satisfied c:. |

This series was executed well! I enjoyed every single episode, all the emotion as well as the humor and so forth, I couldn't have asked for a better ending to this show , seeing Ayu again ;_; with the hope of her being able to run again definitely is one of the many highlights of this episode for me , I can't describe with words what a great anime this really is This anime is a masterpiece. 11/10 |

ok this series was really disapointing first of all the story isn't that good, amnesia is the #1 excuse for not explaining stories lol the comedy wasn't even near to clanad's and kanon's sunohara (which could be one of the main sources of comedy) barely entered the show etc etc i respect the opinnion of the people who loved the series.. i myself didn't dislike it and everyone has the right to say what they think, i just felt disapointed, because i was expecting something like clannad, but, then again, i like to think of clannad as an improvement, since it was released after |

Man... I was still somehow hoping for a Makoto end. Oh well. Honestly, this was a great episode, and a great series overall as well. 7/10 - very good. I grew to like all of the story arcs quite well (Makoto's still da best doe), and I definitely liked all of the cast also. But... I dunno. Ayu isn't who I would've picked for Yuuichi for sure, touching as their story may be. I'm so happy that Shiori was saved, though! Makoto > Shiori > Mai > Ayu > Nayuki in terms of pairings for Yuuichi. |

I only have enjoyed Mai's arc... At least Kanon is not as boring as Air... -Clannad ftw- |
In every score, there's a feeling... |

ZaldiuntheGerman said: Man... No way, makoto is a horrible pair for him. She's like 13. lol I felt that Ayu x Yuuichi was the best pair. However if you wanna see a Nayuki x Yuuichi style pairing (without the blood relation of course) clannad is the way to go. I enjoyed both equally though. I think Clannad had more content though. well it was bound to have more content considering there was an after story for clannad. I would've loved an after story for this though :( Anywho, 10/10 beautiful feel good story. Would recommend. Thanks key! |

I just finished rewatching a wonderful series... I truly loved it! When I first watched it last year, I kept comparing it to Clannad so I didn't like it very much. Now that I rewatch it, I realized it is a lot more different than Clannad than I thought. In fact, it's better than season 1 of Clannad, that's for sure. Anyways, I am so happy I rewatched Kanon and gave it a second chance... Such an emotional and heartwarming anime, with lovable and amazing characters and great writing! I now realized that it is one of my favorite anime... I'd even say that it's in my Top 5 :D Loved the ending, too!! Ayu~ I love all of the girls! x3 And Yuuichi... and, heck, even Kitagawa! haha |

Whenever it comes to the finale, I am always at a loss to what to say, to be honest. And here I am, thinking that it would be rather difficult for KyoAni to pull of an end as good as the Toei version - it ended up as good as I'd expect to be. The 2002 Kanon really impressed me with its ending, and its drama seriously wins the 2006 in all perspectives for the last episode. Yet, one have to admit that the drama is rather powerful to the point of being excessive in the old Kanon - Yuuichi was about to leave for good, before Nayuki realised that Ayu was in hospital all along and kissed I am however, still highly disappointed that they toned down on the Nayuki-Yuuichi romance here (I am a Nayuki fan after all), and Ayu's 'revival' from the coma was too much and too draggy, and less powerful than the old one in which Yuuichi touched her hand and everything starts to fade - that is, before seeing Ayu awake. Admittedly, Toei spent their budget most on the last episode, and it left a greater impression on me than the 2006. Nevertheless, even with my disapproval regarding Nayuki's arc, I loved this series greatly. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call this a masterpiece, obviously, my definition of a masterpiece is usually one with inherent flaws...that made the series what it is. Having finally completed Kanon totally, I find it troubling and I guess I'd re-evaluate the old Kanon in consideration of this newer Kanon too. 10/10 for this, 8/10 for the older Kanon to balance its highly underrated marks, despite its many-a-times better than the 2006 version here and there while considering its serious and huge problems. Since there are a few who 'ranked' the girls...I guess I should do mine too. Nayuki>Ayu>Shiori>Makoto>Mai but that doesn't mean Mai is bad. Her story was just not as good as the others in my opinion, with reference to the amount of development, emotions, themes, motifs, characterisation and imagery used (fedora hat here). (I guess...I still wrote extremely long for the last episode, eh?) |

So basically what I heard from yahoo answers was that Ayu's last wish was for Yuichi's own happiness, which led to everyone having their own miracle's and recovering faster and surviving, and while during the show, Ayu was going through astral-projection (Clannad Spoiler alert) like Fuko was in Clannad I wouldn't call the ending deus ex machina, rather it was nicely set-up, with the supernatural elements to help cushion it. It wasn't a perfect ending but it can work to an extent depending on who you are. Also Ayu looks a lot younger... shouldn't your physical body still be aging while in a coma? This is probably the fastest I've finished a series, 24 episodes in 2 days. It was a good run. I would say my favorites are Makoto=Ayu > Shiori = Mai > Nayuki (Not that I dislike her). I cried the most during Makoto's arc, and teared up a bit at Ayu's part. I don't think I felt as emotionally compelled compared to Clannad AS but was still really good. For now I'd rate it in a range of 7.5 - 8.0. Also, was Ayu aware of what happened while she was in her state of "astral projection"? Was the Ayu we saw throughout the show really her? Edit: NVM, I understand everything behind the "multiple" Ayu's and the red hairband. Man, I like this ending though. It's been a long time since an ending made me think back so much. |

I'm a bit confused... So the Ayu that we saw for most of the series was an "astral projection?" And how did Ayu have the red headband or even know about it if Yuichi never even gave it to her when they were kids? Also, how did coma Ayu already have the doll in her hand when Yuichi first saw her in the hospital? |

So in the end, she still didn't recover from her accident and continued the astral projection, or Yuuichi still being delusional. Ayu was significantly larger in the hospital bed than in the wheelchair at the end. |

This anime was great. Much better than Clannad. Makoto Arc = It was the saddest scene in the anime 10 episode. 9/10 |

this show is so, so, so special. i really can't be rational about it. it has so many technical flaws but none of them matter when it manages to wrap itself so tightly around your heart and makes you want to protect LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER (maybe not Kitagawa) with your life. it also seems to exist in a parallel, isolated universe where it's always winter, every inch of snow is purposeful, every word is poetry, and every relationship is coated in magic. i don't think anyone will understand what any of the above means; i don't think i do myself. it's just as i said - i can't be rational about any of this. it's special, unique, and something i'll forever hold dear. happy anniversary. |

So I guess everyone comparing Ayu to Fuko (from Clannad) Glad everything ended happily. I went into this show expecting a typical drama / romance anime but it surprised me after the first 6 episodes. The supernatural caught me off-guard for sure, didn't check the genres or totally missed the supernatural tag. Makoto touched me the most as it reminded me so much of my own cat dying a few years back so ... I got a bit (not just a bit) emotional. Mai's arc also felt sad, Shiori I didnt really care about that much and Ayu was depressing but definitely not as emotional for me as Makoto. Since everyone else is comparing this show to Clannad (sobbing wise) ... I definitely felt more for the Clannad characters and entire story in general, that anime literally destroyed me, aside from Makoto's arc this show did not. Still though, a solid drama / romance and a well deserved 8/10 from me. |

So a happy ending after all? That is good, everyone alive and for the first time we get to see sakura? The ending with the wheelchair reminded me a little of the far ending of clannad's side story: Tomoyo After: It's a Wonderful Life Overall Kanon is not a masterpiece for me, as it didn't give me so strong emotions, but it was nice to watch, I am thinking of raising the vote for the ending, but I really don't know... The best part was Mai arc and I also liked Nayuki as character. 7/10 or 8/10 hard decision |
(づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ ちゅっ ちゅっ キス (´。✪ω✪。`) I hate it when anime/manga that I enjoyed ends, especially when there could be much longer plot and when I love main heroine :P I wish I had magic glasses that let me see real world in anime colors ;) |

I ran across this randomly over the weekend, so it's my first time seeing this universe in any sense. I think I'd like to find the writers and creators for this show and tie them up, then kick them in the chest every 30 minutes for about 12 hours straight and ask them how they like it....but I wont, because it was worth it to make it to the end. I gave this a 10/10, I've only seen a few anime shows, but this one did the best job of wringing my emotions of what little I've seen. It's interesting to read the reviews and realize there are other shows that are related. I have Clannad on my to watch list, but now I must do some research to see if there is anything I should watch before starting that. |
