Now... while this character is very emotional, I still loved Ange from Cross Ange. She expresses emotion reasonably, but isn't a cry baby... more like a bipolar bitch. But she's not always sobbing and getting all emotional, especially when she kills' She was a badass... and nowhere was that more apparent than in the scene where [spoilers] Ange and Hilda are arrested for deserting and spend a week in the slammer. They talk about how they've lost everything and how the people they knew hated them [/spoiler]

now... what would happen in most anime? They'd hug each other and cry together right. Now, that wouldn't have been bad. It would have shown a more caring side, and well... Ange is pretty cute when she's not pissed off. But what happen is that they

They sounded like they wanted to fucking bomb the shit out of stuff and kill hundreds of people... So cool... Ange showed zero sympathy when she killed a wounded human point blank.

Another example... Shiji is hated for his wussyness, so is Yukki from Mirrai Nikki. Also, while I loved this show, Kurau Phantom Memory suffered from this. Kurau started off as this super cool badass secret agent chick... awesome right? Well... after Christmas is introduced (not the holiday, the character), she becomes way too emotional about humans and renax. This was a problem in Ga-Rei Zero too....

At what point does showing emotions keep characters from being cool? I'm not saying characters need to be cold... but... How many times did you see the major from ghost in the shell cry? I can remember one time, but that didn't even count. What about Spike from cowboy bebop... remember all the times where he cried to himself and sat aboard the ship eating ice cream and watching Korean dramas? I don't. What about that scene in Gurren Lagann when Kamina got all depressed and cried in a corner? Remember that... of course you don't...Kamina is a badass

tl;dr

I don't mind characters crying as long as it's not overdone. It's normal for anyone to cry. It can make a character cooler as it shows that they have a heart and are flawed.

for me it depends on how often it happens.

Now, I can forgive Ga-rei zero simply because I feel a lot of story was pushed into 12 episodes, so the crying scenes were justified, there was just a lot of them

I like when a character looks emotionless all the time and pretty badass but then x thing happens and they start crying a lot, like damn, that's cool for me.

I'd rather have a character with realistic emotions (not exaggerated) than an expressionless type.

Characters like Feitan are cool even though they are emotionless, but that doesn't go for all characters. Sasuke as cool as he was when he was more powerful, back in earlier episodes of Shippuden. Now he's basically on the same level, if not inferior to Naruto.

As long as crying isn't overdone, like it is in most anime, they can be cool. If they find that middleground, they find the heart of coolness.

I'll never shut up about Cross Ange till the world see's it's genius
And a lot of people hate Shinji... Neon Genesis Evangellion is one of the most divisive anime ever made... Shinji is one of the most loved/hated characrters ever
Sasuke is a dickcheese

not really. characters who are completely stoic and unfazed by their surroundings aren't really believable, especially if there's no reason for them to be stoic all the time. at the same time, i don't like it when characters feel the need to cry every other episode.

Cross Ange posts make wonder whether you are trolling or serious about the show's quality.

Because it sounds quite overexaggerated.

I don't know if it's truly being emotionless, but not exploding into tears and shouting every 5 minutes helps. Just because a character doesn't appear to be emotional doesn't mean they really are that way; it takes a while to boil to the surface. Emotion is more powerful if it's not used every episode. Some characters do seem to burst into fits of despair over stuff that... really doesn't require that large of a reaction.

It all depends on whether said character is merely apathetic or a level headed stoic individual.
If the former then no, that just makes them shallow, dull, and boring, if the latter then yes it does make them cooler.

No, but if they're going for 'feels' most shows would do well by toning down the wailing. There's a fine line between evoking emotion...and cheese. Anime seems to cross it all too often for me.

True.

Hell no, it has the opposite effect. Nothing is a bigger bitch than an internalizing piece of granite.

Though any minor indication of a response would do.

It depends on the situation,

like Guts crying at the pivotal moment of the Eclipse (you know where he loses his eye) is perfectly ok. That man went through hell and finally showed human emotions.

But if Zoro cried during the Merry being set on fire I'd lose so much respect for that nigga, it's a ship, get over it.

So it depends on the context and how well it's executed.

if a character is a pushover and the anime makers added a crybaby to his character then ye its annoying

i find Inaho from Aldnoah.Zero cool, he is always calm that makes him deadly

not crying, that's just being a man. being stoic is whole different thing. I wouldn't say being stoic 'often' makes a character cooler, however, being stoic, ironically, adds some character to that character, so it's not a bad thing. For example, Tsukimoto Makoto from Ping Pong the Animation was a very interesting character to me. There is also Heiwajima Kasuka from Durarara!! whom many people consider cool.

I like when characters show emotions. It the most beautifully done when a character with a hard cover and tough attitude breaks at some point.

But I definitely can't stand those who cry in every small hardship. (like my loved example-scapegoat Yukiteru from Mirai Nikki).

Actually, no, and I was thinking about berserk as an exemple to answer no to this thread.
Guts shows a lot of strong emotions. And he's definitely cooler than most MC without emotions, who are just walking block of ice.

Not being very talkative however can help, I would say.

No, it makes you an unsympathetic sociopath by not displaying any outward expression. Even showing the characters internalizing emotions with the use of internal monologue humanizes them.

Depends on what kind of character the writer is trying to portray. But for MCs I prefer one that is a happy medium of the two. Not too emotional, at least outwardly and not too-- static? Stilted? It'd make the MC a bit too bland I think. But i have no doubt that some one could pull an MC with limited emotions off
