Just wondering since I'm seeing people refer to her as a boy. Also isn't Kalluto a girl as well?

Killua refers to her as "she" and that's good enough for me.

Boy, believes himself to be a girl. Kalluto most likely dresses up like a girl because he's jealous of the relationship between Alluka and Killua.

Alluka is most likely transgender: biological male, psychological gender identity is female.

copy and modified from the other thread:

Basically it's stated clearly Zoldyck family has five Sons.

In the official Data book:
Alluka is describe as the 4th brother who has yet to appear.
Kalluto is describe as "A boy (shounen) who wears Kimono"
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=1buhh&s=5

And in the last month JUMP's report on Election Arc anime, Alluka is described "The fourth son in the family". The word is 'male' (男), and when you combine with four it refers to (fourth son), Son. Male. there's no ambiguity whatsoever.
http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2014/06/18/latest-preview-of-next-hunter-x-hunter-anime-arc-designs

Those who are shown calling Alluka male:

1) Illumi, who always refer Alluka as younger brother.

2) Milluki, who also introduce Alluka to a stranger as his younger brother (along with Kalluto, so he called both Alluka and Kalluto male).

3) Mom

4) The butlers called Alluka as Bo-chan "坊ちゃん" , which literally translated as "Young Master", and it's used specifically for male children.
http://www.wordsense.eu/坊っちゃん/
Again there's no gender neutral nor ambiguity in this word, it's only used for male .

Those who are shown calling Alluka female:
Killua...that's it.

He told Gotoh that Alluka is a 'girl" (with quotation mark) and Gotoh is shown sweating and looked troubled.

So if you deduce from the fact that the official statement + Zoldyck family + Butlers called Alluka male, but only Killua called Alluka 'her", Alluka is most likely transgender (born male, psychological female), but since only Killua respects her feelings so only he use the female pronoun.

Togashi is such a weirdo, I'll just pretend they're both girls. If they're truly male then let them look like one. Togashi and his cross dressing homosexuality at its finest. All this does is confuses his fans. If there's a reason why he made them look female then I can understand but I don't see any reason to make them like that.

People have told you the probable reasons: the transgender device can show that only Killua truly cares about Alluka's feelings in the family (actually no one cares about Killua's feelings in this family anyway).

As for Kalluto cross-dressing, as Watashii said, he did it out of jealousy (because later on there's a Zoldyck family relationship charts which shown Kalluto jealous of Alluka).

So it's not just doing it for lol sake for no reason..it's part of character quirks and relationship, and really why not? Togashi has drawn transgender character before in his previous works (Level E), he's always into gender-bending. One of the works he planned that got rejected by JUMP was about a boy dressed up as a girl.

We know Alluka's gender, it's her sex we are unsure of. Alluka wants to be referred to as a girl, and Killua, being the closest to Alluka and the only one that really cares about her refers to Alluka as a girl and his little sister, not a boy or his little brother.

I don't think you were supposed to take that as a literal fact. I mean, every other character at least acknowledges that Alluka is a part of the Zoldyck family, Where would she come from, who are her parents then? And if she really wasn't a Zoldyck, then why would the butlers refer to her as young master? I think that much of her family is terrified of her powers, they see her as a monster.

Of course, even if she wasn't a human, she may still have a sex, and even without a sex, she would still have a gender. She wants to be referred to as a girl, and Killua refers to her as a girl, and his little sister. So if she was nonhuman, she would be a female non-human, regardless of what she has or not between her legs.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think she is biologically male. I'm just respecting Killua referring to her gender as female.

Actually,

I think it's too early to say that he is right. Not even the HxH wiki makes any mention of it.

Another wrench in that theory is that she seemed to have a normal life until her powers were discovered. It was only when her family learned of the problems with said powers, that they locked her away and refer to her as a monster.

The viewer is led to see her as a monster, but when we actually do see her interact with Killua, we learn she is actually very compassionate, even about her family.

So I think that if it was that she wasn't human then she would have been locked up from the beginning or not even taken in or something.

Even her alter ego Nanika is considered the most kindhearted person Killua knows.

Acting like Alluka is some sort of monster if she was just not human is quite unlike the characters. All throughout the Chimera ant arc, we see characters who aren't exactly human, but they act human, and several even receive protection.

If Alluka is somehow "mixed" with another creature or power, then shouldn't she still be Alluka? I don't think Silva or the rest of the Zoldycks would call Alluka a monster, just because of her genetics or what she is.

No, I think they're afraid because of her powers. In that way, she is very dangerous and I could see many people call somebody like Alluka a monster if she asked for the impossible and punished those unable to fulfill her requests.

Of course, again, I repeat myself, even if she was non-human, she might still have a sex, but even barring that, she would still have a gender, she has one, it doesn't require genitals. Her personality and gender identity is clearly female and the closest person to her sees her as a female.

Maybe she isn't human, and maybe the Zoldycks (besides Killua) base their hatred off of that, but that doesn't sound right to me. I mean, I know they're not exactly the good guys, but I'm much more likely to base my opinion of somebody on their actions (the ones they can control). Alluka expresses herself as a girl, she acts like a girl, she wants to be addressed as a girl, so I would address her as a girl.

Alluka refers to herself as Killua's sister and Killua calls her his sister as well. Therefore her gender at least is female. As for her actual biological sex we mightnever know. So think of her as a girl.

Lol really? What if someone's biologically a man, psychologically a woman, and is attracted to women? Would you consider that person... straight? The thing is, being transgender or transvestite does not mean that person is a homosexual. I personally know a person that's biologically male, dresses like a female, and is interested in females (as you can imagine, it's uh... quite tough for the poor guy to find someone to date, lol).

Alluka is a little different then what you guys seem to be implying anyway. At this point, unless I'm missing something, there's nothing to indicate that Alluka is psychologically female. Does Alluka consider herself a boy that likes to dress like a girl, or does Alluka consider herself to actually be a girl? There's a big difference.

There's also the fact that the entire family except for Killua seems to be calling Alluka a "thing", rather than a person. They might just be staying purposefully vague, and the male gender being a translation error (different languages have different levels of how to say things while remaining gender neutral, there's much more of that in Japanese than English).

No it's not a fact.
only Silva called Alluka a 'thing'. Both Illumi and Milluki called Alluka "younger brother" and used pronoun "he" with no ambiguity and there is certainly no translation error. The butlers all refer Alluka as young master (Bo-chan), an term used specifically for male children and sons. All these male pronouns and male calling are all exactly how literal it is in Japanese and Togashi did it purposefully. And No Japanese doesn't have the he=it thing going on. The official character descriptions (databook and anime report on Jump) clearly describe Alluka as the fourth son (male/brother) in the family.

Is that just a translation or the manga has the same?
OT: meh, whatever.
The normal Zolyck sons have "illu" in their names, the trangenders have "allu". Is there a japanese here who knows if these means anything?
