You get anime like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail and Gintama that pan out over a huge amount of episodes.

And then things like Spice And Wolf, Black Lagoon and Baccano! that is over in a season or two.

I've watched both and my preference is towards Short-Running Anime for my own reasons. I've always wondered what the greater anime community prefers most.
Not trying to start a flame-war. I just wanted to know which you prefer and why?

Out of my four 10/10's,
Monster and LoGH are fairly long, while Utena and HnC season 2 are less than 50 episodes.

So pretty much on the middle from my perspective.

Short running anime because I like closure.

Also because I don't have time to watch 750 episodes of Detective Conan (I wish I did) or 640 One Piece episodes

HunterxHunter is the only long-running show I follow

I always like to say between two shows that I enjoy equally the longer one will always be the one I appreciate more because it provides me with the same enjoyment for a longer period of time.
Still a 9/10 Movie is better than a 8/10 show with 200 episodes.
I probably regret this post by now.

Interesting statement. And there is lots of truth to it if you think about it. Anime like Clannad, FMA and Code Geass are not short by any means and we know how they were received by their peers...

Do 30-60 episodes count as long or short?

If closure means an endless score of cut-off adaptations, sure. Unless you're one of the few who only watch anime originals, of course.

Short shows are much better imo, the ending is often the best part of a series and there not dragged out with fillers, they have proper character development too.

Monogatari Series (combined 50+ episodes)
Naruto (over 300+ episodes)
SKET Dance (77 episodes)
The Tatami Galaxy (11 eps)

Based on this only. Long running I guess.

When I first watched the big ones (Naruto,Bleach,One Piece,Fairy Tail),I liked them at first but then the hype got off because I realised they are not something special.I prefer semi series maximum 25-70 episodes,no longer than 100.I also like small series about 12-13 episodes but only when I don't have enough time to watch something longer. Gintama being long didn't bother me at all.I actually never got bored of it and laughed my heart out.

Generally longer anime are better. I always when watching a short anime I like, end up wanting more episodes. It allows for a longer story, more time with characters, etc. Of course there are some anime that are better short, but it's not most of the ones I like.
My all time favorite anime is 600+ episodes long and I want it to be longer.

Definitely short running anime. Well more specifically anime that range from 12 episodes to around 60-ish episodes. Anything longer than that I have to a very good reason to watch.

The reason is mostly just time investment. Its just hard for me to get into a slow burning, really long series nowadays, I just don't have the patience for it.

Technically I do have the time to watch a really long series, but it would literally take me forever to get through as I'd only be able to watch only a few episodes most days. Following a really long runner (ex. Case closed, One Piece, Naruto) is so much effort invested into one series that might be decently enjoyable, but in that same period of time you could have enjoyed many other series that are potentially better than your long runner.. So this is a huge drawback, you are sacrificing many other potentially great series for one very long winded series.

Also some long winded series can be really good when they start, but gradually decline in quality over time. But since you've made such a gargantuan time investment into the anime, you could feel like you "have to" keep going with the series, I never like this feeling.

I really like it when a series can hit you with feels, amazing story, and connect you to the characters without taking hundreds of episodes to do so. One of the major draw back of long runners is that shit gets repititve, and you get arcs in the series that you end up hating despite like other arcs (ex. for me, One Piece Thriller Bark, Skypia, Davy Back Fight, Punk Hazard arcs I sorely disliked compared to other arcs).

I don't want to completely vilify long runners though. To be fair, I'm following some long runners through manga format. And once you catch up with a long runner series, then it becomes just like any other currently airing show you are watching, not too much of a time investment because you only get weekly/monthly release. Also, if done correctly, long runners can make you more attached to the characters and give more time to flesh out characters, allow them to do more stuff in the anime..

I was just thinking the exact same thing. For example, I'm currently watching Baccano! and I believe that it will fall short of true greatness because of its lack of episodes. Just my opinion though. I'm sure everyone feels like that in their own respective short anime.

Since One Piece is my all time favorite I would say long running, it gives you the time to get to know almost every character and fall in love with the anime, that's why I have so many 10/10 in my list.
But I also enjoy short ones, the number of episodes is irrelevant if you enjoy it.

When I first started watching anime, I liked watching the long stuff. I binge watched Naruto/Naruto Shippuden (up to almost the war) in a month and a half. Then started watching 50-100ep series... Dont quite have that same patience anymore. 22-26ep series get boring if the story is slow/bad. So I look mostly for the 1-season-er's.

My favourites are always two cour and above. More development, more plot, and more climax/build up. I have a few one cour favourites just because it was just so good even with such little screen time.

edit - Looked at my favourites again. Mostly in the three cour to four cour zone (aka 39-52)

I find anything between 24-100 episodes is good length. Those 12-13 episode shows are just too short to really enjoy. The plot develops too fast, the character development is too fast, almost everything is too fast and if it's not too fast, then it just doesn't feel complete. On the other hand, once you get into the triple digits, it starts to get boring and repetitive or there's just tons and tons of fillers.

I typically prefer shorter anime as they're short and easy to watch and you don't get bored of it. I've barely watched anime anime above 30 episodes. Though I am attempting LotGH right now! I'm on episode 40, though I am watching a lot of other stuff during it so I don't get bored.

I mean, I guess I'm just not terribly patient or something.

I know I should watch LOTGH at some point, but...it's over a hundred episodes...it's like....too much time investment, and typically I marathon my anime. I wouldn't be able to marathon this.

Shorter anime tend to be better because they don't over stay their welcome. Long running anime suffer from massive drops in quality and filler, of course a large majority of anime fans just want quantity and quality.

That's depends on a lot of reasons.
I would say that short are better, but it's subjective. I mean there's any long-running good? Yes, some of them are...So, we can't say all of them is shit.

But i agree what someone ask, what is too short/too long for you? A guy with a free time, can say 500episodes, you in other hand 50. So is very subjective either.

Wow dude, what about Monster?? I mean 60 isn't a bit of low? There a plenty of shows around 70 eps too.
Long ones like more 100+, most of them can really sux.
But, in other hand i liked OP same as you x)

I'm more of a fan of shorter stuff, because I'm a big fan of closure, which is something we rarely get with long series. I also don't like filler and recaping which happens a lot in long shows as well.

I will watch a long show as long as it's interesting though.

Right now I'm watching 5 short one season shows, 2 that will run two seasons, and 3 long shows.

I'm more inclined to like a specific series more if it has a lot of episodes.

The more time spent watching = the more opportunities, the more experience, the more memories = emotional attachment

This is one of the reasons why I don't see One Piece ever leaving my (legit) favorite's list. Shorter series definitely have their place though.

Shorter Series tend to make less mistakes in my experience, while longer series will have more opportunities to screw things up. While they will also have more chances for greatness so in essence it's a trade off. Depending on how the show goes, it can go either way for me.

It really depends on what I feel like watching. Almost all of my favorite anime fall under the 12- 27 episode category. However, I find that shows like Naruto and Fairy Tail are both just as enjoyable as any shorter running anime. If you can handle the fillers and the 6 episode long battles, you will find that both are really rewarding shows to watch.

I like them both, but I tend to enjoy longer ones more. A key example is Major, by the end of it I was so attached to Goro and the other characters, I felt so sad at the end, really wishing I could see more of them. I'm not sure if I ever have gotten that sort of feeling from an anime under 50 episodes.

MAL does not represent the "greater anime community" well in this case.

A lot of people who only watch Naruto, Bleach, One Piece etc would obviously prefer long shows, and they would not be on this site.

Generally speaking, short running. Since they are meant to last around a season or two, the writers make sure to use their time wisely. The characters a usually well-developed, with stronger writing and significantly better pacing. Long running anime (typically 100 episodes or more), like Naruto and Dragon Ball, struggle to have interesting content every episode because so much of it is filler. They can certainly be good, but I feel that they struggle as a whole.
